Chapter 3 - The Custody Trap

The two-week countdown to my custody hearing was vanishing rapidly.

Every night after the boys went to sleep, I sat at the small desk in my private room, reading through court documents and bank statements. My ex-husband, Richard, was using his wealthy family's lawyers to frame me as an unfit, unstable mother who couldn't provide a secure home for Chloe.

I needed this job at the Foster estate to prove financial stability, but I knew Richard was looking for any excuse to ruin me.

On Tuesday afternoon, while the quadruplets were doing their art lesson in the sunroom, the front gates opened, and a sleek grey sedan pulled up the driveway.

A woman stepped out wearing a crisp beige coat, holding a leather briefcase.

It was Evelyn Reed—the court-appointed child welfare evaluator assigned to my custody case.

My stomach dropped into a tight knot. She was supposed to visit my private apartment next week, not the Foster mansion today.

"Ms. Carter," Evelyn said coldly, walking into the foyer with an intimidating posture. "I received an anonymous tip claiming you were working in an unsafe, chaotic environment surrounded by criminal elements. I came to evaluate your workplace suitability immediately."

Before I could answer, Leo, Sam, Luke, and Toby ran into the foyer, their hands covered in blue and red paint.

My pulse spiked. If the boys acted out right now, Evelyn would document it as a chaotic environment and destroy my chances of keeping Chloe forever.

"Boys," I said gently, turning to them. "This is Mrs. Reed. She's a guest."

Leo looked at Evelyn's stern face, then at my pale, trembling hands. He had seen my daughter's picture on my desk earlier that week; he knew how much Chloe meant to me.

Leo stepped forward, wiping his painted hands on a towel. He straightened his posture, giving Evelyn a flawless, polite bow.

"Welcome to our home, Mrs. Reed," Leo said in a sweet, perfectly composed tone. "Miss Emily was just about to serve us afternoon tea and help us with our advanced math worksheets."

Sam immediately grabbed a chair for her. "Please sit down, ma'am. Miss Emily is the best teacher we've ever had. She makes us eat vegetables and read books every single day."

Evelyn blinked in absolute surprise, looking from the polite, well-mannered boys to me.

For the next two hours, the four boys who had once destroyed a kitchen with terrifying precision acted like angel choirboys. They solved math problems, ate their snacks neatly, and spoke about how much I helped their family.

When Evelyn finally packed her briefcase to leave, she turned to me with a warm smile. "I must admit, Ms. Carter, the anonymous report was entirely false. You have turned this household into a model of discipline and warmth. I will be submitting a glowing report to the judge."

As her car drove down the driveway, I let out a long breath and collapsed onto the foyer bench.

The four boys gathered around me. Toby gently patted my knee.

"We did good, right, Miss Emily?" Toby asked quietly.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I pulled all four boys into a tight embrace. "You were perfect. Absolutely perfect."

From the top of the grand staircase, Daniel stood watching us. For the first time since I had entered his home, a genuine, radiant smile broke across his handsome face.
