Chapter 8 - Truths and Treasures

Two weeks after the battle at Calloway's, the city of Chicago was transformed.
The O'Connor syndicate was completely dismantled. The corrupt elements of the city had been purged, and Dominic Vance had achieved total, undisputed control over the region.
But instead of expanding his criminal empire, Dominic did something that shocked every crime family across North America.
He liquidated his illicit holdings, turned over all illegal operations to neutral third-party arbiters, and officially transitioned the Vance name into a fully legitimate corporate enterprise—real estate development, international shipping logistics, and massive philanthropic foundations dedicated to supporting single mothers and children in poverty.
On a bright, crisp spring afternoon, Dominic took Lena and Nora to a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan.
The snow had finally melted, giving way to green grass and blooming wildflowers. The sun reflected off the sparkling blue water, warm and brilliant.
Dominic stood near the edge of the cliff, holding Nora on his hip. The nine-month-old baby was laughing, reaching her hands out toward the seagulls flying overhead.
Lena walked up beside them, wrapping her arm around Dominic’s waist. She looked up at his face—the cold, stoic scar was still there, but the icy darkness in his eyes was completely gone, replaced by a deep, peaceful warmth.
"What are you thinking about?" Lena asked gently.
Dominic looked down at her, his arm tightening around her shoulders.
"I was thinking about the day you walked down those fourteen stone steps into my office," Dominic said softly. "You thought you were walking into your worst nightmare."
"I was terrified," Lena admitted with a soft laugh. "I thought you were going to throw me in jail."
"And instead, you gave me a reason to live again," Dominic said, his voice thick with sincerity.
He set Nora down gently on a soft blanket spread out over the grass, then turned to face Lena fully. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a velvet ring box.
Lena’s heart stopped.
Dominic sank down onto one knee in the green grass. He opened the box, revealing a magnificent ring featuring a cushion-cut diamond surrounded by small, delicate pink sapphires.
"Lena Cruz," Dominic said, looking up into her hazel eyes with absolute devotion. "You walked into my life with eleven dollars in your pocket and a heart full of love for your daughter. You showed me that even in the darkest storm, hope never dies. I love you, Lena. Will you marry me and make me the luckiest man in this city?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy streamed down Lena's face. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes!" she sobbed, throwing her arms around his neck as he stood up. "Yes, Dominic! Yes!"
Dominic pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply as the ocean breeze rustled through the trees around them. Nora cooed happily from her blanket, clapping her tiny hands together as if celebrating the moment with them.
