Chapter 7 - The Shadows Strike Back

The storm outside Calloway's restaurant raged as three dark SUVs pulled into the alleyway behind the kitchen.

Julian O'Connor stood in the center of the dark alley, holding a lit flare in one hand and a heavy assault rifle in the other. Five of his heavily armed enforcers were splashing gasoline against the wooden rear doors of the restaurant.

"Burn it all!" Julian laughed maniacally, his voice echoed through the empty alley. "Burn Vance’s precious little empire to the ground! Let's see how much he loves his little waitress when he has nothing left!"

Suddenly, the headlights of an armored convoy cut through the darkness from both ends of the alley, trapping Julian’s SUVs in a blinding box of light.

The engine roars died down, leaving only the sound of wind and heavy footsteps on snow.

Dominic Vance stepped out from the lead vehicle. He wore a heavy black overcoat, holding a silver-plated shotgun resting casually against his shoulder. Behind him stood twenty of his top enforcers, weapons drawn, blocking every possible escape route.

Julian dropped his flare into the snow, his smile instantly vanishing. "Vance..."

"Julian," Dominic said, his voice flat, devoid of any human emotion. "You killed my wife. You killed my daughter. And for three years, I let you live because I thought peace was better for business."

Dominic racked the slide of his shotgun with a loud, metallic CLACK.

"But then you threatened the woman I love. You threatened her child. And now... there is no more business."

"Kill him!" Julian shrieked, raising his rifle.

The alley erupted into thunderous gunfire.

Muzzle flashes illuminated the snow like strobe lights. Dominic moved with ruthless, mechanical precision, firing shot after shot with devastating accuracy. His men advanced like a disciplined wall of iron, completely overpowering Julian's mercenaries within minutes.

Julian, wounded in the shoulder, attempted to scramble over a chain-link fence at the back of the alley.

Dominic walked up behind him, grabbed him by the collar of his coat, and slammed him face-first into the brick wall.

Julian spat blood, looking up at Dominic with terrified, desperate eyes. "Vance... please... we can make a deal! I'll give you my territory! I'll leave Chicago forever!"

Dominic stared down at his mortal enemy. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, faded photograph of his late wife and daughter, Clara. He set it gently on the snow beside Julian's bleeding head.

"This is for Clara," Dominic whispered coldly.

BANG.

Silence returned to the alley, save for the quiet sound of snow falling over the brick walls.

Dominic turned back toward his vehicle, adjusting his gloves. "Clean this up," he ordered his men quietly. "Erase every trace. Chicago is ours now."
