Chapter 9 - The Sovereign Ring

That evening, as the spring sun began to set over Lake Michigan in a breathtaking tapestry of violet, rose, and molten gold, our estate returned to a quiet, sacred tranquility.
Leo and Maya were fast asleep in their adjoining bedrooms on the second floor, their small hands tucked beneath their pillows, Barnaby resting peacefully across the hallway threshold, breathing in the deep, peaceful rhythm of children who knew they were safe forever.
Luca and I walked down the private stone pathway leading to the edge of the bluff overlooking the water, holding hands.
The cool evening breeze blew fresh and clean off the lake, carrying the sweet fragrance of blooming yellow roses, wild pine, and clean water.
Luca stopped at the carved stone balustrade.
He turned to face me, his hands reaching out to gently cup both sides of my face, his thumbs wiping away a stray wisp of hair from my cheekbone.
“Seven years ago, Nia,” Luca spoke, his deep baritone trembling with raw, unvarnished emotion. “I gave you a diamond ring in an expensive restaurant, surrounded by photographers and publicists. I thought a marriage was a contract between two families to build a fortune.”
He took a slow, deep breath, his eyes glistening with happy, cathartic tears beneath the rising evening stars.
“I was an arrogant, blind fool. It took losing you, it took walking through the desert of my own vanity, and it took looking into the eyes of our children to understand what a marriage truly is.”
Luca reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy-blue velvet jeweler’s box.
My breath caught in my throat.
He slowly lowered himself onto one knee on the flagstone pathway beneath the open sky.
He opened the velvet box.
Inside sat a magnificent custom-crafted platinum ring set with a rare, flawless eight-carat cushion-cut yellow diamond—representing the sunshine that had burned away our winter—flanked by two brilliant half-moon diamonds representing Leo and Maya.
“Nia Eleanor Carter,” Luca whispered, his voice carrying the authority of an empire and the complete, beautiful surrender of a man who had found his soul. “You built a sanctuary out of flour and courage. You protected our children when I was too blind to see the light. And you gave this empty man a second chance to live. Marry me, Nia. Be my wife. Not for an empire, not for a contract, but for every heartbeat I have left in this life.”
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled freely down my cheeks.
“Yes, Luca,” I whispered, laughing through my joyful tears. “Yes! A thousand times yes!”

Luca stood up, sliding the yellow diamond onto my finger before sweeping me into his massive, powerful arms, lifting me off the ground and spinning me around as the waves crashed gently against the shore below.
When he set me down, his mouth claimed mine in a deep, breathtaking, lingering kiss that sealed our past, our present, and our eternal future under the open stars.
