Chapter 9 - The House That Saved Me Became the Place Where My Sister Finally Told Me Why She Had Been Forced to DisappearFive years after the snowstorm, Emma finally told me everything.

She had not only been running from Voss.
She had been protecting a child.
Her own.
A little boy named Samuel.
I stared.
“You have a son?”
She nodded.
“He's six.”
“Where is he?”
“With my friend.”
She had hidden him because Gideon wanted leverage.
Now he was safe.
He moved into the estate.
Lila was thrilled.
She finally had a cousin.
The house became louder.
Messier.
Better.
Adrian loved it.
He had spent his childhood surrounded by armed men and whispered threats.
Now he had children screaming over board games.
He complained.
But he smiled while doing it.
One evening, I found him sitting alone.
“What?”
He looked at me.
“I never imagined this.”
“What?”
“Home.”
I smiled.
“You have one.”
He took my hand.
“I have you.”
I kissed him.
Then he said:
“Your sister saved my life.”
I nodded.
“She saved mine too.”
Emma joined us.
She handed me another letter.
From our mother.
A final final final letter.
We laughed.
“How many did she write?”
Emma smiled.
“She was thorough.”
The letter said:
My girls,
If you're reading this, then you survived.
That's all I ever wanted.
She explained that the family trust was never meant to make us rich.
It was meant to give us freedom.
She wanted her daughters to choose their own futures.
She wanted Emma to find safety.
She wanted Grace to understand that poverty did not make her less valuable.
And she wanted Adrian to learn that power could protect or destroy depending on how it was used.
At the bottom:
Choose love.
I cried.
So did Emma.
Adrian read it.
Then he kissed my forehead.
“We did.”
May you like
I smiled.
“We did.”
