Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW OF THE HALE GROUP

Twenty minutes after the ballroom emptied and the guests were ushered downstairs to the main dining wing, Elena sat on the edge of a plush sofa in Nathaniel’s private ground-floor study. Lily was fast asleep beside her, holding her stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest, exhausted from the drama.

Elena stared at her hands, her mind racing in a panic.

“Mr. Cross... you shouldn't have canceled those contracts,” Elena whispered, her voice tight with anxiety. “Vanessa Hale’s father is Richard Hale. He’s powerful. He’ll make trouble for you... and I’ve put your business in danger just because my daughter snuck out of the staff wing.”

Nathaniel stood by the grand fireplace, a glass of amber scotch resting untouched in his hand. He looked down at Elena—her soft brown hair pinned up neatly, her dark eyes filled with a fierce, protective motherly love that had captivated him for months.

“Elena,” Nathaniel said quietly, stepping closer. “Richard Hale’s company has been overcharging Cross Meridian on shipping tariffs for two years. I was already planning to sever ties with them next month. Vanessa simply accelerated the schedule.”

“But the things she said...” Elena lowered her head, a tear slipping down her cheek. “She was right about one thing. We live in the staff quarters. I clean your floors, Mr. Cross. I can’t have my daughter thinking she can wander into your world and mess things up.”

Nathaniel set his glass down on the mantelpiece and walked over, sitting on the heavy oak coffee table directly in front of her. He leaned in, forcing her to look up into his dark grey eyes.

“Listen to me, Elena,” he said, his voice dropping into an intense, low frequency. “Lily is four years old. She walked into a ballroom because she saw bright lights and wanted strawberries. She did nothing wrong. And as long as I am alive, no one—no one—will ever make her feel less than human under my roof.”

Elena felt a flutter in her chest that she hadn't felt in three long, painful years. Ever since Daniel died, she had built armor around her heart, convinced that her only role in life was to survive and protect Lily.

“Why do you care so much?” Elena asked softly, her eyes searching his face. “We are just your staff.”

Nathaniel reached out, his long fingers hovering for a second before gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His touch was warm, sending a quiet electric current straight to her core.

“You have never been just staff to me, Elena,” Nathaniel murmured softly. “Not since the day I found your daughter drawing purple roofs in my kitchen.”

Before Elena could process his words, his phone buzzed violently on the desk.

Nathaniel stepped back, answering the call. His expression hardened into steel within seconds.

“Speak, Marcus,” Nathaniel ordered.

“Mr. Cross,” his head of security reported over the speaker. “Richard Hale just called an emergency board meeting for the North-East Logistics Alliance tomorrow morning. He’s trying to freeze our port access in New Jersey. And Vanessa... she’s reached out to a tabloid journalist. She’s threatening to release a story claiming you mistreated her and pushed her at the gala.”

Nathaniel let out a cold, dark chuckle. “Let them try. Marcus, prepare the private jet. We’re going to Manhattan early.”
