Chương 5 - The Fall of the Empire

The trial did not drag on for months, as Victoria’s attorney had initially boasted to the press.

Faced with the mountain of evidence—the hospital cloud-recording showing Victoria threatening to drop Lily, the forensic handwriting analysis proving the signature forgeries, and the testimony of the bank manager who flagged the eighty-thousand-dollar wire transfer—Richard Vance advised his clients to take a plea deal.

The court session for sentencing took place on a rainy Tuesday morning in late November.

The courtroom was quiet, devoid of the theatrical fanfare that Victoria had tried to manufacture weeks earlier.

Brianna stood at the defense table wearing a dark, oversized state-issued suit. Her hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, her arrogance completely broken by the six weeks she had spent in the county detention center after her fiancé officially broke off their engagement and evicted her from his luxury apartment.

Victoria sat beside her, looking withered, small, and genuinely defeated, stripped of her designer wardrobe and her social standing in the city.

Judge Helen Thorne, a stern woman in her sixties with a reputation for merciless rulings on domestic abuse and financial fraud, looked down from the bench over her reading glasses.

"In my thirty years on the bench," Judge Thorne began, her voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls of the courtroom, "I have seen many cases of familial betrayal. But the absolute cruelty demonstrated by the defendants—entering a hospital room to terrorize a woman who had just given birth, physically assaulting her, and using an infant child as an extortion lever—is among the most reprehensible behavior I have ever encountered."

Victoria began to sob quietly, her head bowed.

"Mrs. Mitchell," Judge Thorne continued, looking down at my mother. "You viewed your daughter not as a human being, but as an endless financial resource to fuel your own vanity. Under the terms of the plea agreement negotiated by the State, you are hereby sentenced to four years at the Logan Correctional Center for felony grand theft and corporate bank fraud."

Victoria let out a strangled cry, sagging into her chair.

"Furthermore," Judge Thorne added, "a full order of restitution is entered against you in the amount of six hundred and forty-two thousand dollars. The court hereby authorizes the immediate liquidation of your residential property in Oak Park to satisfy this debt."

Brianna began to shake uncontrollably beside her mother.

"As for you, Ms. Brianna Mitchell," the judge said, shifting her sharp gaze to my sister. "You participated willingly in this extortion scheme, committed physical assault against a post-operative patient, and showed a total lack of remorse until your lifestyle was threatened. You are sentenced to eighteen months in state custody, followed by three years of mandatory probation and two hundred hours of community service."

Judge Thorne slammed her gavel down with a sharp, final strike. "Court is adjourned."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead Victoria and Brianna away through the side door reserved for custody transfers, Brianna looked over her shoulder toward the gallery where I sat beside Daniel.

There was no anger left in her eyes. Only a hollow, terrified desperation.

"Chloe!" Brianna cried out as the cuffs clicked around her wrists. "Please! Talk to them! Don't let them take us!"

I stayed seated. I didn't scream, I didn't gloat, and I didn't shed a single tear.

I simply met her gaze with a calm, unyielding silence until the heavy door clicked shut behind them, closing the chapter on the people who had spent my entire life convincing me that love was something I had to buy.

Daniel reached over, taking my hand in his, his warm fingers weaving through mine.

"It's over," Daniel whispered gently.

"No," I said, turning to look at him, a genuine, deep sense of peace settling into my chest for the very first time. "It's not over. It's just finally starting."
