Chương 3 - The Family Council

Three days after arriving home with Lily, my quiet sanctuary in Lincoln Park was invaded by the rest of the extended family.

My aunt Eleanor—Victoria’s older sister—and my uncle Arthur had organized what they called an 'emergency family intervention.' They arrived at our townhome at six in the evening, stepping into our foyer with expressions of high-minded moral outrage.

They didn't bring gifts for the baby. They didn't ask how my C-section recovery was progressing.

Instead, Eleanor walked straight into my living room, threw her wool coat over the back of my leather sofa, and turned to face me where I sat resting with a warm heating pad against my back.

"Chloe, this has gone entirely too far," Eleanor announced, smoothing her silver hair. "Your mother is staying in a hotel because she’s too traumatized to go back to her own house, and Brianna has spent three nights in a jail cell with common criminals!"

Uncle Arthur stood beside her, his hands shoved deep into his trousers, nodding in solemn agreement. "You're tearing this family apart, Chloe. Over a misunderstanding?"

Daniel walked out of the kitchen holding a tray of coffee mugs, setting it down on the coffee table with a loud clack. "A misunderstanding?" Daniel asked, his eyes narrowing. "Aunt Eleanor, Brianna physically assaulted my wife less than twelve hours after she had major surgery. Victoria held our newborn daughter like a bargaining chip. Is that what you call a misunderstanding?"

"Brianna is young and emotional!" Eleanor snapped, waving her hand dismissively. "She was excited about her wedding! And Victoria was simply overwhelmed by the stress of the day. You know how dramatic your mother gets!"

"She's twenty-six years old, Eleanor," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor. "She isn't a child. And my mother isn't 'dramatic.' She's a thief."

Arthur frowned, stepping forward. "Watch your mouth, Chloe. That is your mother you're talking about!"

"Read the room, Arthur," I replied coldly, reaching onto the side table and tossing a bound booklet of the forensic audit onto the glass coffee table between us. "Page six. Your sister forged my signature fourteen times over the last two years. She stole six hundred and forty-two thousand dollars from my company."

Arthur hesitated, looking down at the legal documents. He slowly reached out, picked up the booklet, and began flipping through the pages. As his eyes scanned the bank stamps, the forensic handwriting analysis, and the certified wire receipts, the color slowly drained from his face.

"This... this can't be right," Arthur stammered. "Victoria told us you gave her permission to manage the family reserve fund."

"There is no family reserve fund!" I said, leaning forward despite the dull ache in my core. "There is my company, my sweat, and my seventy-hour work weeks! For ten years, you all sat back and enjoyed the holiday parties, the vacation rentals, and the catered dinners I paid for, never once asking where the money came from!"

Eleanor swallowed hard, looking at the papers in her husband's hands, but her pride refused to let her yield.

"Even if she made a mistake with the accounts, Chloe," Eleanor insisted, her tone shifting from outrage to a desperate, manipulative pleading, "she's still your mother! You can't let her go to prison! Think about how this looks to the community! Think about what people at the club will say!"

"I don't care about your club, Eleanor," I said flatly. "And I don't care about community gossip."

"If you don't drop the charges," Arthur warned, his voice taking on a dark, threatening edge, "the entire family will disown you. You will never be invited to another holiday, another birthday, or another family gathering. You will be dead to us."

Daniel let out a cold, sharp laugh from the doorway.

"Is that supposed to be a threat, Arthur?" Daniel asked, stepping up beside my chair and placing his hand on my shoulder. "You're offering to remove a group of parasitic narcissists from our daughter's life for free? Where do we sign?"

Eleanor gasped, her face flushing bright red. "You arrogant, ungrateful little—"

"Get out of my house," I interrupted, standing up slowly, holding myself tall despite the physical weakness of my body. "If any of you step onto my property again, or try to contact me through my business, my attorney will add you to the restraining order."

Arthur dropped the audit papers back onto the table, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. Realizing that their emotional blackmail had failed completely, Eleanor grabbed her coat from the sofa, her eyes burning with pure venom.

"You're a heartless monster, Chloe," Eleanor spat as she walked toward the door. "Your father is rolling in his grave."

"My father worked himself into an early grave trying to satisfy your sister's greed," I called out after her. "I won't let her do the same thing to my daughter."
