Chapter 14 - Celeste Finally Told the Truth

Celeste read Victor’s note twice.

“He’s going to the freight terminal.”

“Why?” Luca asked.

“Records.”

“Digital?”

“Some.”

“Physical?”

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“Years.”

Luca called Marco.

“Lock down the terminal.”

Marco shook his head.

“Victor still has authority in several systems.”

“Revoke it.”

“Already trying.”

Celeste stood.

“There’s another archive.”

Everyone looked at her.

Luca’s expression hardened.

“What archive?”

She swallowed.

“The Piermont warehouse.”

Daniel frowned.

“That property was sold two years ago.”

“Officially.”

Luca stared at her.

“Who owns it?”

“Raven Shore.”

Of course.

“What’s there?”

“Original contracts. Old company books. Copies of authorization seals.”

“Enough to implicate me?”

“Yes.”

“And enough to clear me?”

Celeste hesitated.

“If you know what you’re looking for.”

Luca walked toward her.

“You had fourteen years of my trust.”

“Twelve.”

“Do you think that makes this better?”

“No.”

“You sat at my table. You handled my mother’s estate. You helped negotiate my sister’s divorce.”

“I know.”

“You knew every weakness in my life.”

“Yes.”

“And you handed Victor the tools to manufacture my signature.”

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The question was not angry.

That was worse.

Celeste looked down.

“Because I was thirty-one and terrified of losing everything.”

Luca waited.

“My father had debts. My mother was sick. Victor knew.”

She stopped.

“I had borrowed money through a firm account without authorization.”

“How much?”

“Eighty thousand.”

Luca stared.

“You helped steal millions because Victor caught you borrowing eighty thousand dollars?”

“At first he asked for one signature.”

There it was again.

One small choice.

Then another.

Then another.

“He said he’d report me if I refused.”

“So you complied.”

“Yes.”

“For years.”

“Yes.”

Luca turned away.

Celeste wiped her eyes.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

“I’m asking you to stop Victor.”

“That was already the plan.”

“And I’m willing to testify.”

Luca looked back.

“Against him?”

“Against myself too.”

That mattered.

Not enough to erase anything.

But it mattered.

Elena had been listening quietly.

“Why did you put Thomas’s recording in the safe?”

Celeste looked at her.

“Because I hated myself.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

She nodded.

“I think some part of me wanted someone to find it.”

“Why not simply give it to Luca?”

“Cowardice.”

Celeste did not decorate the word.

Elena studied her.

Then said, “At least you finally learned to name it.”

They left for Piermont with law enforcement already notified through Luca’s independent attorneys.

For once, Luca was not going to handle the problem in secret.

That decision felt strange.

Almost like stepping outside without armor.

The warehouse stood near the river, abandoned from the outside.

Inside, lights were burning.

Marco’s team found the side door unlocked.

Luca stopped them.

“No heroics.”

Marco nearly smiled.

“You giving me safety advice?”

“Yes.”

“Historic day.”

They entered only after authorities arrived.

Victor was inside.

Not destroying evidence.

Sitting beside stacks of boxes.

Waiting.

Luca approached.

“You ran.”

Victor shook his head.

“I relocated.”

“You sound like Celeste.”

“Lawyers infected all of us.”

Celeste stepped forward.

Victor looked disappointed.

“You brought her.”

“She came.”

Victor stared at her.

“You’re testifying?”

“Yes.”

“Against me?”

“Against us.”

Something in Victor softened.

“About time.”

Everyone stared.

Luca frowned.

“You wanted this?”

“No.”

Victor stood.

“But I knew how it ended.”

“Then why run?”

Victor pointed toward the boxes.

“Because Paul was going to burn these.”

Marco turned.

“Paul?”

“I told him to help me leave. He thought that meant we were destroying everything.”

“Where is he?”

“Gone.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“You weren’t the only person I stopped trusting.”

Luca looked at the records.

“So you protected the evidence.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victor’s eyes moved toward him.

“Because a three-year-old told me I was bad.”

No one laughed.

Victor continued.

“I’ve had prosecutors call me worse. Judges. Rivals. Your father.”

He looked toward Mia’s absent place as though she were still in the room.

“But she looked at me like the answer was simple.”

His voice became quieter.

“Maybe it is.”

Luca studied him.

“Are you confessing?”

“I’m done running.”

Victor removed the silver signet ring.

He placed it on a crate.

“Your father gave me that when I was twenty-nine.”

Luca said nothing.

“I spent years believing loyalty meant protecting the family no matter what.”

Victor looked at the boxes.

“I think somewhere along the way I started believing the family meant me.”

Authorities moved closer.

Victor did not resist.

Before they took him away, he stopped beside Elena.

“I frightened you.”

She looked at him.

“Yes.”

“I had no right.”

“No.”

“I’m sorry.”

Elena’s expression remained steady.

“Your apology belongs after the truth, not instead of it.”

Victor nodded.

“You sound like Thomas.”

Tears filled her eyes.

Victor continued walking.

For the first time in days, there was no secret left between them.

But Luca’s hardest decision was still ahead.

May you like

Because exposing Victor was easy compared with deciding what to do with the empire that had allowed Victor to exist.
