Chapter 10 - The Lockbox Beneath the Floor

The safe-deposit box was registered under Thomas and Elena Bennett.
The bank opened at nine.
Elena arrived at nine-oh-three with Marco posing as her cousin.
Luca remained at the estate, coordinating with Daniel.
He hated every second of it.
At 9:17, Elena called.
“They found the box.”
“Are you inside?”
“Yes.”
“Anyone follow you?”
“Marco says no.”
Luca heard Marco in the background.
“I said nobody obvious.”
Elena whispered, “He’s very cheerful.”
“I know.”
The bank employee placed a long metal box on the private-room table.
Then left.
Elena inserted Thomas’s brass key.
Her hand trembled.
Marco asked, “Want me to do it?”
“No.”
She opened the lid.
Inside were folders.
A photograph.
And a sealed letter.
Elena picked up the photograph first.
Thomas held baby Mia in his arms.
He was laughing.
Elena sat down.
Marco quietly turned away.
The letter was addressed:
Elena, if you ever have to open this.
She unfolded it.
I hope you never read this.
If you are, then I failed to solve the problem before it reached our family.
First, I love you.
Second, do not blame Luca Moretti until you know the truth.
Elena read that sentence twice.
I grew up believing powerful men were all the same. I was wrong about at least one of them. Luca doesn’t know what Victor built underneath his father’s companies.
Raven Shore started under Alessandro Moretti, but not for the reason Victor claims.
It was an emergency trust meant to support families of employees who died or became unable to work. After Alessandro died, Victor quietly took control.
Elena continued.
He changed the beneficiaries.
He diverted money.
Then he started replacing it with money moved through fake contracts so no one would notice the original trust had been emptied.
Marco leaned closer.
“That explains the old company.”
Elena kept reading.
When Luca began auditing older operations and moving businesses into legitimate structures, Victor panicked. If Luca ever reviewed Raven Shore, he would discover everything.
So Victor began creating documents that made Luca appear responsible.
Another page.
Celeste found out later. She helped him. I don’t know why.
Then:
The master ledger proves it.
Elena looked into the box.
Beneath the letters lay a thick black ledger.
Harbor Nine.
Her breath stopped.
“We found it.”
At the mansion, Luca stood.
“Get out of there.”
“Why?”
“Because if Victor knows about the notebook, he may know about the bank.”
Marco answered.
“We’re leaving.”
A knock sounded on the private-room door.
Everyone froze.
“Mrs. Bennett?” the bank employee called.
“Yes?”
“There’s a gentleman asking for you.”
Marco looked at Elena.
“Name?”
“He said Victor Rinaldi.”
Elena’s blood went cold.
Luca heard everything through the phone.
“Do not open that door.”
Marco already had his hand against it.
“Back exit?”
Elena scanned the room.
None.
“Luca.”
“I’m here.”
“What do we do?”
Luca looked at Daniel.
Then at the halted transfer screen.
Victor wanted the ledger.
Nothing else mattered.
“Put the ledger back.”
“What?”
“Trust me.”
Elena hesitated.
Then did it.
“Take Thomas’s letter.”
She folded it into her purse.
“Now call the bank manager and tell him someone is attempting to access your private documents without authorization.”
Marco understood.
“Public place. Cameras everywhere.”
“Exactly.”
Victor could intimidate employees at an estate.
A major bank branch was different.
The manager arrived with security.
Victor never entered.
He left before anyone confronted him.
Ten minutes later Elena and Marco exited through the front doors.
The black ledger remained in the vault.
“You left it?” Daniel asked when they returned.
“Yes,” Luca said.
“Why?”
“Because Victor wants it.”
“That’s exactly why we need it.”
“No.”
Luca looked toward the surveillance screen.
“That’s exactly why we leave it there.”
Daniel slowly smiled.
“You’re making him come back.”
“I’m making him tell us how far he’ll go.”
Elena was less impressed.
“That ledger contains proof.”
“It’s safer inside a bank vault than inside my house.”
“You also used it as bait without telling me.”
“I made the decision in thirty seconds.”
“You make a lot of decisions for other people.”
“Yes.”
“You might want to work on that.”
“I’ve been told.”
“By whom?”
“No one who kept their job.”
Elena stared.
Luca smiled faintly.
“I’m joking.”
“I honestly can’t tell anymore.”
Later that afternoon, Daniel confirmed Thomas’s explanation.
Raven Shore had indeed begun as an employee relief trust created by Alessandro Moretti.
After Alessandro’s death, Victor became acting trustee.
Within eighteen months, most of the fund vanished into private investments.
Then the fraudulent Harbor Nine cycle began.
Victor had spent years replacing stolen money while taking even more.
“He wasn’t building a rebellion,” Daniel said.
“He was covering theft.”
“And framing me.”
“Yes.”
“What about Celeste?”
“Her signatures begin three years ago.”
Exactly when Thomas discovered the fraud.
Luca leaned back.
“So Victor started alone.”
“Looks that way.”
“And Celeste joined later.”
“Looks that way.”
Elena stood by the window.
“Then she may know what happened to Thomas.”
Luca looked at her.
“Yes.”
The office door opened.
Celeste entered.
Marco immediately stepped forward.
Luca raised one hand.
Celeste looked exhausted.
No makeup.
Hair pulled back.
Nothing like the polished attorney who normally entered Luca’s office.
She placed a phone on his desk.
“I know what happened the night Thomas died.”
Elena became pale.
Luca did not move.
Celeste’s eyes filled with tears.
May you like
“And if you hear the recording on that phone, you’re never going to forgive me.”
