The investigation turned toward Ethan’s late wife.
He hated that.
Caroline had arranged the surrogacy while undergoing aggressive treatment for a heart condition that made pregnancy unsafe.
She died three months before Noah was born.
Ethan had believed every decision was settled.
Then his attorney recovered old emails from Caroline’s account.
One was addressed to Melissa Grant.
Caroline wrote:
I want Sofia protected after delivery. She is not an employee. She is doing something extraordinary for us.
Ethan closed his eyes.
Caroline had known Sofia by name.
Another email discussed sending photographs after Noah’s first birthday.
That contradicted the no-contact arrangement Ethan received.
Sofia began crying when she read it.
“She knew?”
“Yes.”
Ethan felt something inside him fracture.
His wife had intended kindness.
Someone had removed it.
Then the financial review found an unusual payment.
Bright Future Families had charged an additional $85,000 labeled “confidential risk management.”
Ethan had paid it after Caroline’s death without questioning it.
The agency claimed the money covered legal complications.
His attorney requested invoices.
There were none.
The payment had been transferred to a consulting company.
The owner was Melissa Grant.
Ethan stared at the record.
Sofia whispered:
“She took money to keep us apart?”
“Maybe.”
Then another transaction appeared.
Melissa had received a second payment.
