Chapter 40 - THE DAWN OF A NEW ERA

The morning sun rose over the valley the next day with the same blinding, pristine brilliance, burning away the midnight frost and casting long, golden rays across the snow-covered estate grounds.
Inside the manor, the household was already stirring. The rich, inviting scent of roasted coffee and fresh bread drifted up from the expansive kitchens, mingling with the crisp pine scent of the winter air that drifted in through an open latch in the library.
Victor and Elena stood together at the broad oak table in the dining room, reviewing a map of the northern trade routes that connected their valley to the provincial capital. The trade caravans were scheduled to depart before the heavy January blizzards set in, carrying timber, grain, and ironware to the southern markets.
"The inventory is cleared for dispatch," Elena confirmed, pressing a heavy brass paperweight down onto the corner of the map. "Miller will lead the escort detail as far as the river pass. After that, the commercial guards will take over."
"Good," Victor nodded, taking a seat at the head of the table as a servant brought in a fresh tray of breakfast provisions. "Once this convoy gets through, we can close the gates for the winter and focus entirely on the estate's internal administration."
Elena took her seat opposite him, pouring herself a cup of hot tea with steady, practiced grace. She looked out the tall dining room windows toward the sunlit courtyards where the golden fields stretched out endlessly toward the blue line of the northern mountains.
"It's hard to believe we actually built this," Elena said softly, her gaze wandering over the peaceful landscape. "Five years ago, we were sleeping in mud trenches and dodging artillery shells in the ruined provinces. Now we have an estate, a valley of loyal people, and a life that belongs entirely to us."
Victor reached across the table, taking her hand in his. His fingers were warm, strong, and calloused from a lifetime of holding weapons and turning soil.

"We survived the dark, Elena," Victor said, his deep, resonant voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable conviction. "And we didn't just survive it—we conquered it. From now on, the only thing that enters these gates is what we invite in."
Elena smiled—a radiant, triumphant smile that chased away the last lingering shadows of their turbulent past—and squeezed his hand back with equal strength. Outside, the winter wind swept gently across the sunlit valley, carrying the promise of a peaceful, enduring future.
