Chapter 34 - The Unbroken Horizon

The sun climbed higher, burning away the last lingering mists from the river valley and flooding the estate grounds with a brilliant, blinding light that reflected off the frost-covered slate roofs like millions of scattered diamonds.

Victor and Elena turned their horses back toward the estate, riding at a slow, measured pace up the winding stone avenue that led to the grand entrance. The massive iron gates—forged from melted-down artillery pieces from their final campaign—stood wide open, welcoming them home.

As they dismounted in the central courtyard, Daniel hurried out from the stables, taking the reins of their horses with a respectful nod.

"Everything secure, General?" Daniel asked.

"Secure," Victor replied, dropping the heavy leather riding gloves into his coat pocket. "Tell the kitchen to send a pot of hot coffee up to the library. We have the winter ledgers to review before noon."

"Right away, sir."

Elena walked up the broad stone steps, her boots clicking rhythmically against the flags. At the top landing, she paused for a moment, turning to look back out over the sprawling courtyards, the golden fields, and the endless blue line of the northern horizon where the mountains met the sky in a seamless, unbroken line.

Victor joined her, his arm coming around her waist to pull her flush against his side, his chin resting softly on her shoulder just as it had every morning since they claimed this world for themselves.

"Thinking of running away again?" he murmured into her ear, a low, rich rumble of amusement vibrating through his chest.

Elena leaned back against him, closing her eyes as she let his warmth anchor her completely. She reached up and placed her hands over his, feeling the steady, powerful thud of his heart—a heart that belonged to no one else in the world.

"Only if you're coming with me," she whispered with a small, triumphant smile.

May you like

Victor’s grip tightened possessively, pulling her just a fraction closer as the morning wind swept across the estate grounds, carrying the scent of pine, woodsmoke, and absolute freedom.

"Nowhere to go," he replied softly, kissing the side of her neck. "We've already won the dark."
