Chapter 4 - The Code in the Garden

Three months passed.
The Vance Estate, once a cold, silent fortress of dark marble and guarded doors, had slowly, miraculously begun to change.
Laughter—a sound that hadn't been heard within the stone walls for over a decade—now echoed through the grand corridors. Brightly colored drawings of cats, dragons, and sunshine were taped to the stainless-steel refrigerators in the commercial kitchen. Pink sneakers sat beside Kazuki’s polished leather dress shoes in the foyer.
Ivy was thriving.
She attended a prestigious private academy in Presidio Heights under an assumed name, escorted daily by Kenji and two undercover security vehicles. In the afternoons, she sat in the estate's sunlit glass conservatory, doing her homework while Kazuki reviewed international shipping manifests at a nearby table.
An extraordinary, unspoken bond had formed between the terrifying mafia boss and the tiny, brilliant girl.
Kazuki didn't treat Ivy like a weapon or a tool. He treated her with a quiet, protective reverence. He taught her how to play chess—a game she mastered in four days—and in return, Ivy taught him how to draw cartoon frogs in the margins of his million-dollar corporate contracts.
Claire, too, had adapted. As Estate Manager, she ran the twenty-person household staff with effortless grace, her natural intelligence and fierce work ethic transforming the mansion into a warm, impeccably organized sanctuary.
For the first time in seven years, Claire wasn't terrified of the end of the month. She had color in her cheeks, her hair shone, and her eyes no longer held the hollow panic of survival.
And beneath the quiet routines, a subtle, electric tension had begun to bloom between Claire and Kazuki.
It was in the long, lingering looks they exchanged across the dining room table. It was in the way Kazuki’s dark eyes softened whenever Claire walked into his office carrying his evening coffee. It was in the way Claire’s heart fluttered whenever Kazuki gently lifted Ivy onto his shoulders to reach the high shelves in the estate library.
They were two people from vastly different worlds, bound together by a child’s miracle and a shared promise of protection.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, everything shattered.
Kazuki was sitting in his private command center in the basement of the estate, surrounded by twenty monitors displaying live security feeds from the Port of Oakland. Kenji stood beside him, his expression grim.
"The shipment from Osaka arrived two hours ago, boss," Kenji reported. "Customs cleared the containers without inspection, just as planned. But three of our harbor supervisors haven't checked in."
Kazuki’s eyes narrowed. "Put up the dock six security feed."
The monitor flickered to life, displaying a grainy, high-definition camera angle of a secluded warehouse near Pier 40. Four men in high-visibility jackets were standing near a black SUV, speaking animatedly to a man in a long charcoal trench coat.
"Zoom in on the man in the coat," Kazuki ordered.
The camera zoomed in. The man’s face was partially obscured by the collar of his coat and the heavy fog rolling off the bay, but his mouth was moving rapidly as he issued instructions to the three supervisors.
"It’s encrypted visual dialect," Kenji grunted, rubbing his jaw. "Old Kyoto underground code. None of our translators can read it through the fog."
The door to the command center opened softly.
Claire walked in, holding a tray with a fresh pot of tea. Ivy lagged behind her, clutching a worn copy of Charlotte's Web.
"Kazuki, you missed dinner," Claire began gently, but stopped when she saw the dark, tense atmosphere in the room.
Ivy looked up at the large wall monitor. Her hazel eyes locked onto the blurry, moving lips of the man in the charcoal trench coat.
She dropped her book.
"Ivy?" Claire asked, her heart instantly tightening with fear. "What is it?"
Ivy walked slowly toward the wall of screens, her small face draining of all color.
"The big ship isn't carrying silk," Ivy whispered, her voice trembling as she translated the moving lips on the screen in real time. "The black boxes under the deck have timers. They are set for 8:00 PM tonight."
Kazuki stood up so fast his heavy leather chair crashed to the floor. "Timers? What kind of timers?"
Ivy pointed a small, shaking finger at the screen. "He is saying... 'When the pier blows, Kazuki Vance will be at the harbor to inspect the cargo. He will die in the fire, and the police will blame the cartel.'"
May you like
Kazuki looked at the digital clock on the wall.
It was 7:32 PM.
