Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

By 4:00 AM, Claire and Ivy were no longer in their cramped, damp studio apartment on 16th Street.

They were standing in the grand foyer of the Vance Estate—a fortress-like estate sprawling over five acres of private cliffside land in Pacific Heights. The mansion was surrounded by twelve-foot stone walls, infrared camera grids, and thirty full-time security guards armed with military-grade weapons.

"This is unacceptable!" Claire shouted, her voice echoing off the vaulted marble ceilings of the guest wing. "You are holding us hostage!"

Kazuki stood near the fireplace, sipping a glass of neat scotch. He had traded his blood-stained tuxedo for a simple black cashmere sweater, but the aura of absolute authority around him hadn't diminished.

"I am keeping you alive, Mrs. Doyle," Kazuki corrected calmly. "There is a distinction."

"My rent is due! I have two shifts at the diner tomorrow! If I lose my job, we lose our place!" Claire panicked, pacing back and forth across the Persian rug. Her eyes were red, her clothes rumpled, her strength entirely spent.

Kazuki signaled to Kenji, who stepped forward holding a thick, cream-colored envelope.

"Your landlord has been paid in full for the next three years," Kazuki said smoothly. "Your belongings from the studio apartment are currently being packed by a professional moving crew and brought here. Your diner manager has received a resignation notice along with a cashier's check for twenty thousand dollars to cover your sudden departure."

Claire stopped pacing. She stared at the envelope in Kenji’s hand, her mouth opening and closing without making a sound. "Twenty... twenty thousand dollars?"

"Consider it a minor retainer," Kazuki said, setting his glass down. "Starting today, you are no longer a catering maid or a diner waitress, Mrs. Doyle. You are the official Estate House Manager. You will have a salary of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year, full health insurance, and a private three-bedroom suite in the west wing."

Claire felt dizzy. Her knees wobbled, and she had to reach out to grab the back of an armchair to keep from falling. "And... and what do you want from my daughter?"

Kazuki’s expression turned solemn. He looked toward the corner of the room, where Ivy was lying on a plush carpet, peacefully asleep with her cheek resting on a velvet throw pillow, still holding her worn notebook in her small fist.

"I want her to be safe," Kazuki said. "And in return, when my security team needs to verify a visual surveillance tape... she looks at the screen for five minutes."

"No," Claire said instantly, her voice rising in panic. "No! I won't turn my child into a mafia spy!"

"She is already involved, Claire," Kazuki said, using her first name for the first time. His gray eyes were intense, hypnotic, and filled with a strange, dark honesty. "The men who tried to poison me tonight saw her face. My uncle’s syndicate has operatives in every major city on the West Coast. If you walk out those gates tomorrow, you will be dead before you reach the bus stop."

He took two steps toward her, his tall frame blocking out the light from the fireplace.

"Inside these walls, nobody can touch you," Kazuki promised, his deep voice carrying an unshakeable weight. "I have lost my mother, my brother, and my father to this war. I know what it means to lose the people who make life worth living. I give you my word as the head of the Vance family: as long as I draw breath, no harm will ever come to you or Ivy."

Claire looked at the massive, terrifying man standing before her. She saw the scars on his hands, the dark circles of exhaustion beneath his eyes, and the sheer, crushing weight of responsibility he carried on his broad shoulders.

Then she looked at her daughter, sleeping peacefully in a warm, clean room that didn't smell of mold or exhaust fumes.

"She goes to school," Claire demanded, her voice shaking but resolute. "A real school. With a driver and a guard."

"Done," Kazuki agreed without hesitation.

"And she is never, ever put in physical danger," Claire added, taking a step closer to him, looking up into his dark eyes. "If I see a single gun near my daughter, I will take her and run, even if I have to walk through your security guards."

A faint, genuine smile touched the corner of Kazuki’s lips. "You have a fierce heart, Claire Doyle. Your daughter comes by her bravery honestly."

He turned toward the door, gesturing for Kenji to follow him. Before he stepped out into the hallway, he paused and looked back at her.

"Get some sleep, Claire. Tomorrow, the real work begins."
