Chapter 3 - The Descent into the Vault

The air in the basement corridor beneath the west wing was freezing cold, smelling heavily of copper, damp concrete, and old grease.

While Detective Miller and four troopers secured the sixty panicked guests in the reinforced grand ballroom upstairs, Matthias, Miller, and I descended the steep concrete staircase leading into the subterranean server facility.

Matthias walked two paces behind me, his eyes glued to the floor, his face ruined by tears, shame, and sheer terror. Every time he tried to reach out to steady me as I navigated the stairs in my maternity flats, I pulled away without looking back.

"Serena... please," Matthias choked out, his voice raspy. "Let me carry the notebook. You shouldn't be down here... the baby—"

"Do not talk about our daughter, Matthias," I said, my voice flat and icy. "You lost the right to care about her safety the moment you brought a mercenary into her family's house to cover up your cheap thrill."

"I didn't know!" he cried, stopping on the landing. "I swear to God, Serena, I thought Fiona was just... I thought she was just an associate who wanted me!"

"That makes it worse," I said, turning around on the stairs to look down at him with utter disdain. "You traded your family, your child, and your integrity for someone who flattered your ego. Now shut up and keep moving."

Miller shone his heavy tactical flashlight down the dark hallway ahead. The main power grid for the basement had been cut, leaving only the dull, ominous red glow of emergency backup lights reflecting off the thick steel pipes running along the ceiling.

At the far end of the corridor stood a heavy, vault-style steel door marked LEVEL 4: RESTRICTED CHEMICAL & DATA ACCESS.

Affixed to the digital keypad beside the vault door was a sleek, black electronic device with a blinking red LED display.

34:12... 34:11... 34:10...

"There it is," Miller muttered, pulling his radio from his shoulder. "Captain, I'm at the secondary junction door. The device is a military-grade thermite trigger linked to the internal server rack. I need the EOD team down here now."

"Negative, Detective," the radio crackled with heavy static. "The perimeter driveway charges are live. The bomb squad cannot approach the house without risking an immediate external detonation. You have to disarm the internal link manually using the legacy override."

Miller looked at me. "Mrs. Dre... the notebook."

I opened the yellowed leather book, flipping past old financial records and land deeds until I reached my father-in-law’s hand-written technical schematics from 2018.

"Page forty-two," I said, pointing my phone flashlight at the fading ink. "The system uses an analog dual-key confirmation. It requires the master security key inserted into the manual lock box beneath the keypad, followed by a sixteen-digit hex-code entry."

"The master key..." Miller looked at Matthias. "Where is the physical key?"

Matthias went deathly pale. "It... it's supposed to be in the master bedroom safe upstairs."

"Is it?" I asked, my eyes narrowing as I stared at my husband.

Matthias swallowed hard, rubbing his trembling hands over his face. "I... I moved it last week. Fiona wanted to see the historical land deeds for the Hensley property. I put it in my briefcase in the home office."

"Your briefcase," Miller said, his voice dropping into a tone of pure rage. "The briefcase that Fiona Vale had total access to all evening?"

Before Matthias could answer, a loud, metallic CLANG echoed behind us from the top of the staircase.

The heavy steel fire door at the top of the stairs slammed shut with a deafening bang. The mechanical lock clicked into place, trapping the three of us in the freezing, dark corridor.

Over the overhead emergency speaker system, Fiona’s voice echoed through the concrete space, smooth, mocking, and crystalline.

"Did you really think I didn't know about the Martha's Vineyard notebook, Serena?" Fiona laughed softly. "I sent you that diagram to force you to bring it here tonight. I needed someone with Arthur Dre's blood or legal marriage status to access the secondary locks. Thank you for doing the heavy lifting."
