Chapter 2 - The Sixty-Minute Clock

Panic exploded through the Dre mansion like a physical blow.
Women screamed, dropping their evening bags as men pushed past one another toward the front doors. But before anyone could reach the entrance, four uniformed state troopers stepped inside, locking the heavy oak doors from the interior and raising their hands to command order.
"Everyone remain calm!" Detective Miller bellowed, his voice cutting through the rising hysteria like thunder. "The estate is locked down for your safety! No one leaves until the bomb squad clears the lower levels!"
"Are you insane?!" Arthur Dre shouted, stepping forward with his hands shaking violently as he pointed at Miller. "My family built this estate! My guests are top-tier executives! Unbolt those doors immediately!"
"If you open those doors, Mr. Dre," Miller replied coldly, "you'll trip the external pressure sensors linked to the secondary charges wired along the perimeter driveway. Your house is a containment zone."
Matthias backed away from Fiona, his face pale as paper, his hands trembling as he stared at the woman he had brought as his date. "Fiona... why? I gave you everything... I gave you the Hensley contract... I bought you the diamond—"
"You didn't give me anything, you pathetic, arrogant child," Fiona spat, looking at him with pure, unadulterated disgust. "You gave me access. You were so desperate to feel like a powerful man having an affair that you didn't even check the registration on the shell company I used to buy your little hotel suite in New Haven."
I stepped up beside Detective Miller, my feet aching terribly, a cold sweat breaking out across the back of my neck as a sharp Braxton Hicks contraction tightened across my abdomen. I leaned against a heavy oak sideboard, taking a slow, deep breath to keep my heart rate steady for the baby.
"It wasn't about the Hensley acquisition, was it?" I asked, looking Fiona straight in the eye. "It was about the vaulted server room beneath the west wing."
Fiona’s eyes narrowed slightly, her calm posture faltering for a fraction of a second. "You're smarter than your husband, Serena. I'll give you that."
"I spent nine years as a trauma nurse at Yale New Haven," I said, my voice steady. "I know what industrial chemical burns look like. The diagram sent to my attorney didn't just show structural support pillars. It showed the intake vents for the underground storage tanks holding the proprietary liquid lithium compounds for Arthur’s clean-energy firm."
Arthur Dre went completely white, gripping his wife’s shoulder so hard she cried out. "The Lithium-7 formulas... if those tanks are breached and exposed to high heat—"
"The entire west wing will vaporize," Miller finished flatly. "And the toxic plume will cover a five-mile radius within twenty minutes."
Matthias collapsed onto a velvet sofa near the fireplace, clutching his face in his hands, groaning as the sheer weight of his stupidity and betrayal crushed him. He hadn't just cheated on his pregnant wife; he had handed the keys to his family’s crown jewels—and their physical destruction—to a corporate mercenary.
"How long on the timer, Fiona?" Miller demanded, stepping closer to her, his hand ready on his sidearm.
Fiona looked down at her diamond choker. She reached up, pressing a tiny, concealed button disguised as a clasp on the side of the gems. A faint, high-pitched electronic beep echoed through the quiet room.
"Forty-eight minutes," Fiona whispered, her smile returning, cold and razor-sharp. "And the detonation sequence is hardwired into the central server mainframe downstairs. Unless you have the override codes that Arthur Dre wiped from the system six years ago, no bomb squad in the world can disarm it in time."
Arthur gasped, taking a staggering step backward. "The... the old override codes? I destroyed those paper files after the corporate restructuring!"
May you like
"You thought you destroyed them, Arthur," I said, pulling a thick, yellowed leather notebook from my heavy maternity purse and holding it up for everyone to see. "You left them in the family safe at the summer cottage in Martha's Vineyard. The cottage you gave me the keys to when Matthias and I were married."
Fiona’s smile vanished completely.
