Chapter 5 - The Brother Nobody Knew

His name was Vittorio Valenti.

Marco’s younger brother.

Adrian had never heard his name because Marco had erased him from the family history.

Vittorio explained with chilling calm.

Two brothers had arrived in Chicago decades earlier.

Marco built relationships.

Vittorio built leverage.

Marco wanted legitimacy.

Vittorio wanted power.

Eventually Marco expelled him.

But Vittorio never left Chicago.

He simply disappeared behind corporations, politicians, and intermediaries.

Northbridge became one of his financial pipelines.

Elena discovered the scheme.

Marco planned to expose Vittorio.

Then Marco died.

“Did you kill him?” Adrian asked.

Vittorio smiled.

“Would the answer change anything?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I’d know what kind of man is standing in front of me.”

Vittorio looked almost disappointed.

“You’re more like Marco than I hoped.”

Claire watched Elena.

Something bothered her.

If Elena knew everything, why disappear?

Claire asked.

Elena looked at her.

“Because Vittorio threatened Adrian.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“You abandoned me to protect me?”

“I watched you.”

“From where?”

“Everywhere.”

Anger finally entered Adrian’s voice.

“Nineteen years.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Elena’s eyes filled.

Claire looked away.

This wasn't her moment.

Then she remembered Madison.

“Where is she?”

Vittorio sighed.

“Everyone is obsessed with Madison.”

Carver’s daughter was brought downstairs minutes later.

She was frightened but unharmed.

Claire immediately went to her.

“You okay?”

Madison nodded.

“I've had better mornings.”

Claire almost laughed.

Adrian remained focused on Vittorio.

“What do you want?”

“Control.”

“Of what?”

“Everything Marco left you.”

Adrian stared.

Vittorio continued.

“The accounts. Properties. Companies. Relationships.”

“And if I refuse?”

Vittorio smiled.

“Then Claire releases file eleven.”

Claire blinked.

“What?”

Vittorio looked at her.

“You still don't understand what you found.”

He opened the laptop.

File eleven wasn't merely evidence of stolen money.

It documented everything.

Bribes.

Fraud.

Corrupt officials.

Illegal payments.

Names connected to both Vittorio and Adrian’s organization.

If released, dozens of powerful people would fall.

Including Adrian.

Claire looked at him.

“Did you know?”

“Some of it.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

Claire felt disappointed.

That surprised her.

Why should she care what Adrian Vale had done?

He was a criminal.

He had ordered Madison’s kidnapping.

His men had accidentally abducted Claire.

And yet over the last several days she had seen another man beneath the reputation.

A man who found her cat.

A man who protected her neighbor.

A man who had untied her before he knew whether she was useful.

But kindness did not erase wrongdoing.

Adrian seemed to understand what she was thinking.

“I’m not innocent, Claire.”

She held his gaze.

“I know.”

“I won't pretend otherwise.”

Vittorio laughed.

“How touching.”

Claire ignored him.

“What happens now?”

Adrian looked at the files.

Then at his mother.

Then at Vittorio.

Finally, he looked at Claire.

“You decide.”

Everyone stared.

Claire frowned.

“What?”

“You're the only person here without an agenda.”

“That may be the worst qualification for decision-making I've ever heard.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“Still true.”

Claire looked at file eleven.

Then she saw it.

A number.

One transaction.

She recognized the account.

Northbridge employee pension fund.

Claire zoomed in.

Millions had been taken.

Not Adrian’s money.

Ordinary employees’ retirement savings.

Vittorio had hidden criminal transfers inside legitimate pension investments.

Claire’s expression hardened.

“You stole from employees.”

Vittorio shrugged.

“Money is money.”

“No.”

Claire stood.

“Money is rent. Medicine. College tuition. Retirement.”

Vittorio smiled.

“Spoken like an accountant.”

“Yes.”

Claire turned toward Adrian.

“We expose it.”

Vittorio laughed.

“You expose that file, you expose Adrian too.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

He didn't flinch.

“Do it.”

Vittorio stopped smiling.

Elena stared at her son.

Adrian continued.

“Everything.”

Claire searched his face.

“You could lose everything.”

“Maybe I should.”

That was the moment Claire’s opinion of Adrian Vale changed permanently.

Not because he was innocent.

Because he wasn't.

But because when given the choice between protecting himself and exposing the truth, he chose the truth.

Claire copied the archive.

Vittorio moved toward her.

Ray stepped between them.

The room erupted into shouting.

But Adrian remained calm.

“It's over, Vittorio.”

Vittorio stared at him.

“No.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Claire looked toward the windows.

Senator Carver had contacted federal investigators before arriving.

Vittorio finally understood.

His empire was collapsing.

He looked at Claire.

“You.”

Claire swallowed.

“You were supposed to be nobody.”

Claire held his gaze.

“I’m an accountant.”

Federal agents entered the estate.

Vittorio was taken into custody.

But before he left, he looked back at Adrian.

“You think this ends with me?”

Adrian said nothing.

Vittorio smiled.

“Ask your mother who really ordered Marco’s death.”

Then he disappeared through the doorway.

Adrian slowly turned toward Elena.

She had gone completely pale.

“Mother?”

Elena looked at her son.

And Claire knew immediately.

Vittorio had told the truth about one thing.

Elena was still hiding something.

Adrian asked again.

“Who killed my father?”

Elena’s lips trembled.

“I did.”

May you like

The room fell silent.

And Adrian Vale’s world broke for the second time that morning.
