Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Empire

Adrian entered the room.

Ray went pale.

Claire stood between them.

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian asked one question.

“My mother?”

Ray closed his eyes.

“Adrian—”

“My mother is dead.”

Claire looked at him.

Ray slowly shook his head.

“No.”

The silence that followed felt enormous.

Adrian’s mother, Elena Valenti, had supposedly died in a car accident nineteen years earlier.

Adrian had been eighteen.

He had buried an empty coffin because the vehicle burned beyond recognition.

Ray explained the truth.

Elena survived.

She disappeared deliberately.

Marco Valenti had discovered she was moving money through Northbridge years before his death.

Marco planned to expose her.

Then he died.

Adrian’s hands curled slowly into fists.

“You’re saying my mother killed my father?”

“I don’t know.”

Ray’s voice broke.

“I swear I don’t know.”

“Where is she?”

“I haven't seen her in years.”

Claire watched Adrian’s face.

For the first time, his control cracked.

Not dramatically.

His breathing changed.

His eyes lost focus.

Everything he believed about his family had shifted in seconds.

Claire stepped closer.

“Adrian.”

He looked at her.

That single word seemed to bring him back.

Ray continued.

“Elena built the network. When she disappeared, someone continued operating it.”

“Who?”

“That’s what I’ve been trying to find.”

Claire understood.

“You let your companies remain connected so you could trace the transactions.”

Ray nodded.

Adrian looked betrayed.

“You knew my mother survived and never told me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From my own mother?”

“From what she became.”

Adrian walked out.

Claire followed.

He stopped on the terrace overlooking Chicago.

Rain had stopped.

The city glittered.

“My entire life,” he said quietly, “I believed my father died because of rival families.”

Claire stood beside him.

“And your mother?”

“I mourned her.”

He laughed once without humor.

“I visited her grave.”

Claire didn't know what to say.

So she said nothing.

Adrian looked at her.

“You’re remarkably quiet.”

“I’m an accountant. Emotional counseling costs extra.”

He almost smiled.

Almost.

Then his phone rang.

It was Senator Carver.

Adrian put the call on speaker.

“Vale.”

A strained voice answered.

“We need to meet.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Why?”

“Because your mother is alive.”

Claire and Adrian exchanged a look.

Carver continued.

“And because she has my daughter.”

Adrian became still.

Claire whispered, “Madison?”

“Yes,” Carver said. “She disappeared thirty minutes ago.”

The meeting happened before dawn.

Senator Thomas Carver arrived at Adrian’s mansion without security.

Martin came with him.

Claire immediately confronted Martin.

“You let her leave Northbridge alone?”

“She insisted.”

“And now she’s missing.”

Martin looked sick.

Adrian entered.

“What does Elena want?”

Carver placed an envelope on the table.

Inside was a photograph.

Madison sitting inside an elegant room.

She appeared unharmed but frightened.

Beside the photograph was a message.

BRING CLAIRE BENNETT.

Adrian read it twice.

“No.”

Claire stared.

“She wants me?”

Carver nodded.

“Why?”

Martin answered.

“Because you opened file eleven.”

Claire understood.

Elena knew.

“She thinks I discovered something.”

“You did,” Adrian said.

Claire shook her head.

“Not enough.”

Adrian turned.

“What are you thinking?”

“The transactions.”

She went to the laptop.

“If Elena has been hiding for nineteen years, she needs money. But the stolen funds weren’t simply disappearing. They were being consolidated.”

Claire opened the spreadsheet.

“Look.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“The transfers accelerated six months ago.”

“So?”

“So someone was preparing for something.”

Claire traced the accounts.

One destination appeared repeatedly.

A property company.

She searched the address.

A mansion north of Chicago.

Lake Forest.

Carver recognized it.

“That belonged to Elena’s sister.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

“She’s there.”

Two hours later, Adrian prepared to leave.

Claire blocked him.

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“She asked for me.”

“Exactly.”

“If Madison is there because of something I discovered, I’m coming.”

“No.”

Claire stepped closer.

“You cannot order me around.”

“I can when walking into danger is the alternative.”

“Adrian.”

“No.”

Claire stared at him.

“Fine.”

He narrowed his eyes.

“You agreed too easily.”

“I’m growing as a person.”

He almost smiled.

Then he left.

Twenty minutes later, Ray found Claire climbing into another car.

“You’re terrible at following instructions.”

“I've been told.”

Ray sighed.

Then got into the driver’s seat.

The Lake Forest mansion stood behind tall iron gates.

Adrian was furious when Claire arrived.

But there was no time to argue.

Elena was waiting.

She stood inside a vast drawing room.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Silver streaked through dark hair.

Adrian stopped.

Claire watched twenty years of grief collide with reality.

Elena smiled.

“My son.”

Adrian said nothing.

“Look at you.”

“Where is Madison?”

Elena’s smile faded.

“Always business.”

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

Claire stepped forward.

Elena noticed.

“The accountant.”

Claire swallowed.

“You wanted me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elena walked closer.

“Because you found something nobody else noticed.”

Claire frowned.

“The transactions?”

“No.”

Elena smiled.

“The date.”

Claire thought.

Then she remembered.

The first Lakeshore Maritime transfer.

Twenty-four years ago.

Three days after Marco Valenti died.

Claire’s eyes widened.

Elena saw it.

“There.”

Adrian looked between them.

“What?”

Claire whispered.

“The money started moving after your father died.”

“So?”

“It couldn't have been Elena.”

Everyone became silent.

Claire continued.

“The original authorization had Marco’s credentials.”

Adrian stared.

“My father was dead.”

“Exactly.”

Elena smiled sadly.

“Finally.”

Adrian looked at his mother.

“Who used his credentials?”

Elena answered.

“Someone who had them.”

Ray suddenly went still.

Claire noticed.

So did Adrian.

Elena looked directly at Ray.

“His brother.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“My father didn't have a brother.”

Elena shook her head.

“Yes, he did.”

A door opened behind them.

An older man entered.

Gray hair.

Dark eyes.

A pale scar crossing his jaw in almost exactly the same place as Adrian’s.

Claire’s breath caught.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

Adrian stared at him.

The stranger smiled.

“Hello, nephew.”

And Claire finally understood why every trail had been designed to point toward someone else.

The mastermind had never been hiding from Adrian.

He had spent twenty-four years building an empire specifically to take Adrian’s away.
