Chapter 6 - The True Queen

ONE YEAR LATER

The bright morning sun streamed through the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the fully restored Manhattan penthouse, painting the mahogany floors in brilliant gold and silver light.

The dark stains of the past were completely gone. The ballroom had been redesigned into an exquisite, warm living space filled with rare art, leather-bound books, and panoramic views of the city skyline.

Mara stood near the window, wearing a tailored emerald-green silk dress that complemented her striking features and dark hair, which hung in loose, gorgeous waves around her shoulders.

She was no longer invisible. She was the Chief Executive Officer of Marcel Logistics—the legal, multimillion-dollar international shipping empire that Dante had restructured over the past twelve months, stripping away the violent criminal elements of his legacy to build a legitimate, untouchable powerhouse.

Footsteps sounded behind her on the soft rug.

Dante walked up behind her, wearing a crisp charcoal suit without a tie. He wrapped his strong arms around her waist, pulling her back against his broad chest, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.

"You're thinking again," Dante murmured into her ear, his breath warm against her skin.

Mara smiled, leaning back against him, placing her hands over his. "I was thinking about the florist's vase."

Dante chuckled warmly, kissing the side of her neck. "The best mistake the Morettis ever made was putting that beacon in my foyer. It forced you to stop hiding."

"I wasn't hiding," Mara teased gently, turning around in his arms to look up into his handsome, sharp face. "I was conducting long-term intelligence gathering."

"Is that what you call scrub-cleaning my library floorboards for three years?" Dante laughed, his dark eyes sparkling with affection.

"It gave me a very clear view of your character, Mr. Marcel," she replied, her eyes twinkling with wit. "I knew you were a dangerous man. I just didn't know you were susceptible to housekeepers."

"I wasn't susceptible to housekeepers," Dante said softly, his expression turning deeply sincere and intense. "I fell in love with a woman who had the brain of an attorney, the courage of a soldier, and a heart that kept this entire house from falling apart."

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, navy-blue velvet box.

Mara’s breath caught in her throat.

Dante took a half-step back, holding the open box out to her.

Inside rested a magnificent, one-of-a-kind ring—a flawless, rare emerald-cut black diamond surrounded by a halo of brilliant white diamonds, mounted on a platinum band. It was sophisticated, bold, and unimaginably breathtaking—worth far more than the petty ring Sienna Vale had once paraded around the room.

"A year ago, I offered you a job at my back," Dante said, his voice rich with deep emotion. "Today, Mara... I am asking you to stand by my side. Not as my assistant, not as my partner... but as my wife. The true Queen of this city."

Mara looked at the stunning ring, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had seen through her plain clothes, her invisible mask, and her quiet silence to find the extraordinary woman beneath.

Tears of pure happiness glistened in her brown eyes.

"Yes, Dante," Mara whispered, a radiant smile breaking across her face. "Yes."

Dante slid the heavy diamond ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly, resting against her skin as if it had been forged specifically for her hand.

He pulled her into his arms, lifting her off her feet, and kissed her with a fierce, passionate devotion that wiped away every memory of her painful past, every insult she had ever endured, and every quiet night she had spent in the shadows.

Out on the balcony, the sun rose high over the Manhattan skyline, illuminating a city that now belonged to the plain housekeeper who had proven that true power isn't worn on a dress—it is carried in the soul.
