Chapter 7 - RECKONING ON THE DOCKS

Z
The old abandoned icehouse at Terminal 7 was a decaying cathedral of rusted iron, rotting wooden floorboards, and the freezing stench of stagnant seawater.
Nora was zip-tied to a heavy wooden chair beneath a single swinging incandescent bulb. Her lip was split, her evening gown torn and stained with grease, but her chin was held high.
Grant Bellandi paced in front of her, drenched in rain, his eyes bloodshot and wild with the madness of a man whose world had collapsed in a single evening. On the table beside him lay a burner phone and a heavy revolver.
"He took everything," Bellandi snarled, pacing back and forth like a caged animal. "My accounts, my warehouses, my reputation. The Morettis won't even answer my calls! But he will give it all back. He will sign over the entire southern coastline, or I will put a bullet in your head and mail your tongue to his mother."
"You're already dead, Grant," Nora said calmly, her voice echoing in the vast, hollow warehouse. "You just haven't stopped breathing yet."
Bellandi lunged forward, raising his hand to strike her.
The iron doors of the warehouse blew inward with the force of a military-grade breaching charge.
The shockwave threw Bellandi to the ground. Before the smoke could even begin to clear, the darkness outside erupted with relentless, terrifying precision.
There were no warnings. No negotiations.
Caldero tactical operatives moved through the breach like wraiths, silenced submachine guns spitting suppressed death. The four mercenaries Bellandi had hired didn't even have time to raise their weapons; they dropped where they stood, lifeless before their bodies hit the damp floorboards.
Through the drifting smoke walked Vincent Caldero.
He was not wearing a suit. He wore black tactical gear, his eyes burning with a primal, demonic rage that seemed to suck the very oxygen from the room.
Behind him, flanked by Marcus and four heavily armed guards, walked Evelyn Caldero. Her face was bandaged, her coat soaked in rain, but her eyes were fixed on Nora with the fierce, unyielding intensity of a mother who had come to reclaim her own.
"Caldero!" Bellandi scrambled across the floor, grabbing the revolver from the table and hauling Nora out of the chair, using her as a human shield with the gun pressed shakingly against her temple. "Stay back! Back, or I blow her head off!"
Vincent halted twenty paces away. Marcus raised his rifle, but Vincent held up a single hand, stopping him.
"Let her go, Grant," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm, a dead sea before a tidal wave. "And you might die quickly."
"Sign the southern ports over to me! Call the feds off my accounts!" Bellandi screamed, his finger twitching on the trigger. "Sign it, or she dies right now!"
In the agonizing tension that followed, Evelyn stepped forward past her son.
She looked at Nora. Nora looked back, her breath caught in her throat.
Evelyn raised her hands slowly, deliberately, where Bellandi could see them past Nora’s shoulder.
Drop, Evelyn signed.
Nora didn't hesitate. She didn't think. She trusted the silent woman completely.
Nora threw all her weight downward, dropping like a stone to the floorboards.
The moment the line of sight cleared, Vincent fired twice.
Two hollow-point rounds struck Bellandi square in the chest, hurling him backward through the rotting wooden railing into the icy, churning black waters of the ocean below. A single splash echoed through the silence, and then there was only the sound of rain falling against the corrugated iron roof.
"Nora!"
Vincent threw his weapon aside, dropping to his knees on the wet floorboards, pulling her up into his arms. His hands trembled as he tore the zip-ties from her wrists, wrapping his coat around her shivering body, pulling her fiercely against his chest as if he could never let her go again.
"I have you," he choked out, burying his face in her wet hair, his voice breaking completely. "I have you. You're safe."
May you like
Nora wrapped her bruised arms around his neck, holding on to him with all the strength left in her soul.
Beside them, Evelyn knelt down, placing her hands over both of theirs, completing the circle of survival and blood that would forever bind their lives together.
