Chapter 5 - SMOKE AND MIRRORS

Z
The annual Providence Maritime Charity Gala was held at the historic Biltmore Hotel, an opulent spectacle of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and high-society hypocrisy. It was the premier event of the season, where politicians, legitimate tycoons, and syndicate bosses drank from the same crystal flutes while smiling for local press cameras.
Grant Bellandi was already holding court near the grand ice sculpture when the double doors of the ballroom swung open, silencing the murmur of the room.
Vincent Caldero walked in wearing an impeccably tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, looking every inch the aristocratic master of the waterfront. But what turned every head in the grand ballroom was the woman on his arm—and the woman beside her.
Evelyn Caldero entered the gala wearing a stunning emerald silk gown, diamonds glittering at her throat, her posture regal and commanding. On her left walked Nora Ellis, dressed in an elegant black satin evening gown that hugged her silhouette, her hair pinned up with silver combs, looking entirely at home among the elite of New England.
A collective murmur rippled through the crowd. For three years, rumors had circulated that the Caldero matriarch was an invalid, locked away and mentally broken. Tonight, she looked like a queen returning to claim her throne.
Bellandi’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he smoothed his expression and walked over, flanked by two burly associates disguised in black tie.
"Vincent," Bellandi said smoothly, raising a glass of scotch. "And Mrs. Caldero. What a delightful surprise. We all feared the recent... domestic disruptions at your estate might have kept you confined to bed."
Vincent’s expression was carved from ice. "My mother does not hide from rats, Grant."
Bellandi’s eyes flashed with venom, but he kept his voice low for the benefit of the nearby city council members. He turned his attention to Nora, his gaze sliding down her gown with open disrespect. "And you brought the hired help. How charming. Playing dress-up tonight, sweetheart?"
Before Vincent could step forward to tear Bellandi’s throat out, Evelyn stepped directly into Bellandi’s personal space.
Her hands moved with lightning speed, sharp, aggressive, and undeniable.
Nora stepped up, her voice clear, melodious, and carrying across the surrounding circle of wealthy patrons:
"Mrs. Caldero would like to inform you that your third offshore shell corporation in Grand Cayman was frozen by federal maritime authorities forty-five minutes ago."
Bellandi froze, the blood draining instantly from his face. "What did you say?"
Evelyn signed again, her lips curved into a cold, beautiful smile.
"She also suggests," Nora translated with venomous poise, "that you check your phone. The dockworkers' union at Terminal 4 has just unanimously voted to ratify a ten-year exclusive contract with Caldero Freight Services. Thomas Vance is currently in federal custody, singing like a canary about your little contraband scheme."
A sharp ping sounded from Bellandi’s tuxedo jacket. Then another. And another.
Several prominent businessmen and city officials who had been standing near Bellandi subtly took three steps backward, distancing themselves from a dead man walking.
Bellandi pulled out his phone, his screen flashing with frantic alerts from his operations managers. His hands began to shake with pure, impotent rage. He glared at Nora as if wishing he could strike her dead on the spot.
"You arrogant little bitch," Bellandi hissed under his breath.
In the blink of an eye, Vincent closed the distance between them, his hand gripping Bellandi’s collar with bone-crushing force, pulling him an inch from his face while keeping his body angled to shield the view from the press cameras.
"If you ever look at her again," Vincent whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal promise, "I will not bother with the authorities. I will feed you to the bottom of the bay piece by piece. Do you understand me?"
Vincent shoved Bellandi backward into the arms of his panicked bodyguards.
"Enjoy the party, Grant," Vincent said coldly, adjusting his cuffs. "It will be your last."
Evelyn tapped Nora’s shoulder and signed with a triumphant twinkle in her eye:

Now, let's find the caviar.
Nora laughed aloud, the triumph coursing through her veins like pure electricity, catching Vincent’s admiring gaze as they swept past the ruined remains of Bellandi’s empire.
