Chapter 5 - Harbor 17

At eleven fifty-eight, Evelyn walked into Harbor 17.

Dante hated the plan.

Adrian hated it more.

Evelyn went anyway.

The terminal had been abandoned for decades.

Rusting steel beams stretched above an empty loading floor.

Kent walked beside her.

Dante and Adrian remained out of sight.

The instructions had been explicit.

Evelyn and Kent.

Nobody else.

At noon precisely, a side door opened.

Vanessa emerged.

Alone.

Her ivory dress from the anniversary dinner was wrinkled.

Her makeup had disappeared.

She looked terrified.

Evelyn stared.

“Where’s Margaret?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Kent moved toward her.

“Are you hurt?”

Vanessa backed away.

“Don’t touch me.”

Something had changed.

“You knew,” she said.

Kent frowned.

“Knew what?”

“That they were using me.”

“Vanessa—”

“You knew.”

Evelyn watched them.

Vanessa turned toward her.

“I owe you an apology.”

Evelyn almost laughed.

“This is an unusual place for one.”

“I thought Kent was leaving you.”

“He was.”

“I thought you knew the marriage was over.”

“I didn’t.”

Vanessa’s eyes lowered.

“I’m sorry.”

It didn’t erase anything.

But Evelyn believed her.

“Who hired you?”

“Nobody hired me to sleep with Kent.”

She looked embarrassed.

“I did that all by myself.”

Despite everything, Evelyn almost smiled.

“But I was introduced to him deliberately. A man told me Kent controlled an investment opportunity. He encouraged me to get close.”

“Name.”

“I never got one.”

Kent cursed.

Vanessa continued.

“He called himself Mr. Gray.”

Dante emerged from the shadows.

Vanessa jumped.

“You weren’t supposed to be here.”

“I disappoint people regularly.”

Adrian appeared from the opposite side.

Kent looked annoyed.

Evelyn ignored him.

“Where’s Margaret?”

A speaker crackled overhead.

A distorted voice answered.

“Below you.”

Everyone looked down.

A section of the floor opened electronically.

Metal stairs descended into darkness.

Dante shook his head.

“No.”

Evelyn was already moving.

“Of course.”

He caught her arm.

“This could be a trap.”

“It is a trap.”

“That isn’t reassuring.”

“It wasn’t meant to be.”

Dante stared at her.

Then released her.

They descended.

The underground archive remained intact.

Rows of steel cabinets filled the room.

Margaret sat in a chair near the center.

She was not restrained.

Evelyn stopped.

Margaret stood.

“I’m sorry.”

Adrian stared.

“What did you do?”

Margaret began crying.

“My father didn’t die twenty years ago.”

Silence.

Charles Sloan was alive.

He had lived under another identity for two decades.

Margaret discovered the truth only six months earlier.

“He contacted me.”

“Why?” Evelyn asked.

“Because Kent found the archive.”

Kent looked stunned.

“You?”

Margaret nodded.

Charles wanted the Vale trust.

He believed it belonged to him because Thomas had supposedly destroyed his reputation.

Dante’s voice was cold.

“Your father stole from Thomas.”

“I know.”

Margaret wiped her eyes.

“He convinced himself everyone else was guilty.”

“Where is he?”

Margaret looked toward the far end of the archive.

A light switched on.

An elderly man sat behind glass.

Charles Sloan.

He looked frail.

Almost harmless.

That made Evelyn distrust him immediately.

His voice came through a speaker.

“Hello, Evelyn.”

She stared at the man who had poisoned two families.

“You knew my father.”

“I made your father.”

“You robbed him.”

“I corrected an imbalance.”

Kent laughed bitterly.

“You destroyed my father too.”

“Graham was useful.”

Kent’s face twisted.

Charles continued calmly.

“Thomas needed an enemy. Graham needed someone to blame. People are easiest to control when they’re angry.”

Evelyn felt sick.

“My father died because of you?”

Charles smiled faintly.

“Your father died because he refused to understand compromise.”

Dante stepped forward.

The glass wall locked.

Charles looked at him.

“Ah. Thomas’s stray dog.”

Dante’s expression became dangerous.

Evelyn touched his arm.

He stopped.

She looked at Charles.

“What do you want?”

“The trust.”

“No.”

“You haven’t heard my offer.”

“No.”

Charles’s smile vanished.

“The archive contains evidence implicating Kent in financial crimes.”

Evelyn looked at her husband.

Kent nodded slowly.

“I did them.”

Charles continued.

“It also contains evidence that could ruin Adrian’s new identity and expose Moretti operations.”

Dante looked unconcerned.

“Release it.”

Charles blinked.

“You heard me.”

Dante stepped closer to the glass.

“Release everything.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You could lose everything.”

“Things can be rebuilt.”

Charles’s expression hardened.

Adrian smiled.

“My answer’s the same.”

Kent looked at Evelyn.

Then at Charles.

“Mine too.”

Evelyn was surprised.

Kent removed his watch and placed it on a cabinet.

“What are you doing?”

“Something I should’ve done years ago.”

He faced Evelyn.

“I’m confessing.”

Charles laughed.

“You’ll go to prison.”

“Maybe.”

“You’ll lose your company.”

“Yes.”

“Your reputation.”

“Yes.”

Kent looked at Evelyn.

“I already lost the only thing that mattered.”

She did not forgive him.

But for the first time that night, she saw the man she once loved.

Charles slammed a hand against his desk.

“You think confession saves you?”

“No.”

Kent looked directly at him.

“It saves her from paying for what I did.”

Charles reached for something.

Dante moved.

The lights went out.

A siren began.

Emergency doors started closing.

“Move!” Dante shouted.

Everyone ran.

Evelyn grabbed Margaret.

Adrian pulled Vanessa toward the stairs.

Kent remained behind.

“Kent!”

He was staring at a computer terminal.

“The archive!”

“Leave it!”

“There’s evidence!”

Dante turned back.

Kent inserted a drive.

The progress bar crawled.

72%.

81%.

90%.

Footsteps sounded in the corridor.

Charles was escaping.

Dante grabbed Kent.

“Now.”

The transfer reached 100%.

They ran.

Outside, police vehicles surrounded the terminal.

Margaret had contacted federal investigators before arriving.

Charles Sloan was arrested at the waterfront exit.

For a moment, Evelyn thought it was over.

Then an agent approached.

“Mrs. Ashby?”

“Yes?”

“We recovered something from Mr. Sloan.”

He handed her a small digital recorder.

“There’s a file labeled with your name.”

Evelyn pressed play.

Her mother’s voice emerged.

But Caroline was not alone.

A man answered her.

Evelyn recognized him.

She looked across the terminal at Dante.

The recording continued.

Caroline said, “If Evelyn ever learns what you promised me, she’ll never forgive either of us.”

May you like

Then Dante’s younger voice answered.

“I know.”
