Chapter 4 - My Mother’s Last Secret

The number should have been disconnected eighteen years ago.
It wasn’t.
Dante called it.
A phone began ringing inside Vale House.
Everyone froze.
The sound came from upstairs.
They followed it to Evelyn’s childhood bedroom.
The ringing stopped.
Dante called again.
This time it came from inside the wall.
Behind a loose panel they found an old mobile phone connected to a modern power adapter.
Someone had deliberately kept the number alive.
Adrian checked the recent messages.
Most were deleted.
One remained.
KENT IS LOSING CONTROL. MOVE BEFORE EVELYN LEARNS THE TRUTH.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
“Who received that?”
Dante checked.
A prepaid number.
Untraceable without help.
Margaret sat heavily on the bed.
“This began with me.”
Evelyn turned.
“What?”
Margaret confessed.
After Thomas died, Evelyn’s mother, Caroline, discovered evidence that Graham Ashby had been involved in the Harbor 17 theft.
But Caroline also discovered someone else had manipulated Graham.
She became obsessed with finding that person.
Years passed.
Then Kent returned to Seattle.
He deliberately sought Evelyn out.
Caroline noticed.
She investigated him.
“She knew Kent before I married him?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she stop me?”
“She tried.”
Evelyn remembered arguments.
Her mother saying Kent moved too fast.
Her mother questioning his finances.
Evelyn had called her controlling.
Then Caroline abruptly changed.
She welcomed Kent.
Paid for the wedding.
Never criticized him again.
“Why?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Kent threatened Adrian.”
Adrian stiffened.
“What?”
“He found proof Adrian was alive.”
Kent had leverage.
If Caroline interfered, he would expose Adrian’s location to the people Thomas had feared.
So Caroline stayed silent.
Until the night she died.
“She called Dante because she had finally found something,” Margaret said.
Dante nodded.
“She said she knew who had been behind Graham.”
“And?”
“She died before she told me.”
Evelyn looked at the resurrected phone.
“Maybe she did tell someone.”
They searched its storage.
One audio file survived.
Caroline’s voice.
“If Evelyn ever hears this, I need her to know something first. Kent is guilty of many things. But he did not begin this.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
“His father raised him inside a lie. Graham believed Thomas destroyed him. Someone made sure he believed it.”
A pause.
“The person who benefited from both families fighting was someone we trusted.”
Then the audio ended.
No name.
Adrian cursed.
“Always one step short.”
Evelyn thought differently.
“Who benefited?”
They returned to the ledger.
Vale lost Harbor 17.
Ashby collapsed.
Who acquired the property afterward?
Margaret searched old corporate records on her laptop.
Her face changed.
“Northline.”
“But Kent owns Northline,” Evelyn said.
“Now.”
Margaret turned the screen.
“Not then.”
The original owner was Sloan Maritime Holdings.
Evelyn recognized the surname.
“Margaret Sloan.”
Margaret slowly closed her eyes.
Adrian stepped away from her.
“No.”
Margaret’s voice shook.
“My father.”
Charles Sloan had been Thomas Vale’s attorney.
Margaret had inherited his practice.
“He handled the Harbor contracts,” she whispered.
Dante’s expression hardened.
“He had access to both families.”
Margaret covered her mouth.
“My God.”
Evelyn felt anger rising.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Did your father?”
“He died twenty years ago.”
“Convenient.”
Margaret flinched.
Adrian intervened.
“Evie.”
“No. Everybody in this room has hidden something from me.”
She pointed toward Margaret.
“She kept Adrian secret.”
Toward Dante.
“He knew about Mom’s last night.”
Toward Adrian.
“He stayed alive without contacting me.”
Then she pointed toward herself.
“And apparently I’m the only idiot who spent fifteen years believing her marriage was real.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“You weren’t an idiot.”
“Then what was I?”
“Loved.”
She laughed.
“By whom?”
Adrian answered immediately.
“Me.”
That stopped her.
His eyes were wet.
“I stayed away because I was afraid being your brother would get you killed.”
Evelyn’s anger cracked.
“I needed you.”
“I know.”
“For twenty-seven years.”
“I know.”
He opened his arms but did not approach.
Evelyn stood motionless.
Then crossed the room.
She hugged him.
The grief arrived without permission.
She cried for the twelve-year-old brother she had buried.
For her father.
For her mother.
For herself.
Adrian held her tightly.
“I’m sorry, Evie.”
Across the room, Dante looked away.
Later, when Evelyn had recovered, they returned to the immediate problem.
Kent.
Dante believed Kent had uncovered Charles Sloan’s involvement six years earlier.
That explained why he purchased Northline.
But not what he intended to do with it.
“We need him talking,” Evelyn said.
Dante shook his head.
“No.”
“You said I deserve the truth.”
“Yes.”
“Then stop deciding which truth I can handle.”
Dante met her gaze.
She won.
They returned to the Ashby penthouse shortly before dawn.
Kent was waiting.
Alone.
He looked exhausted.
“Where’s Vanessa?” Evelyn asked.
“Gone.”
“Good.”
Kent stared at Adrian.
“So it’s true.”
“What?”
“You finally came back.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Evelyn stepped between them.
“Talk to me.”
Kent looked at her.
“About what?”
“Everything.”
He laughed weakly.
“That could take years.”
“You have ten minutes.”
Kent sat.
For the first time, he admitted he had approached Evelyn partly because of her surname.
His father had spent his life blaming Thomas Vale for destroying their family.
Kent wanted access to Vale records.
Then something happened he had not planned.
He fell in love with her.
Evelyn wanted to dismiss it.
His face made that difficult.
“I loved you,” he said. “I still do.”
“You cheated on me.”
“Yes.”
“You forged my signature.”
“Yes.”
“You planned to leave.”
Kent hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Then don’t insult me by calling that love.”
He lowered his head.
She asked about Northline.
Kent admitted discovering Charles Sloan’s role.
“Why buy it?”
“Because Northline contains records proving Sloan manipulated both families.”
“Where?”
Kent looked at Dante.
“If I tell her, you guarantee her safety.”
Dante’s voice was cold.
“I’ve been doing that since before you knew her.”
Kent nodded.
“There’s a private archive beneath the old Harbor 17 terminal.”
Evelyn frowned.
“Why didn’t you expose it?”
“Because somebody else found it first.”
“Who?”
Kent looked genuinely frightened.
“I don’t know.”
“They contacted you?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Eight months ago.”
Vanessa.
The affair began eight months ago.
Evelyn understood.
“Was Vanessa part of it?”
Kent looked away.
“Kent.”
“I met Vanessa because she approached me.”
“Who is she?”
“She said she represented investors.”
Dante swore quietly.
“What investors?”
Kent reached for his phone.
Before he could unlock it, the penthouse lights went out.
Dante moved toward Evelyn.
Glass shattered.
A red emergency light flickered on.
Kent’s phone disappeared from the table.
A figure moved through the open balcony door.
Adrian ran after them.
Dante remained with Evelyn.
Kent stared toward the balcony.
“No.”
“What?” Evelyn demanded.
Kent looked terrified.
“They found us.”
A second phone began vibrating inside Kent’s desk.
He opened the drawer.
One message glowed on the screen.
BRING EVELYN TO HARBOR 17 AT NOON.
Below it was a photograph.
May you like
Vanessa sat alone in a dark room.
And behind her stood Margaret Sloan.
