Chapter 4 - The Vengeful Ex

The peace that settled over the Cole estate over the next two weeks was brief.
While Ethan and Grace adjusted to their new reality—no longer employer and employee, but two people deeply in love—a storm was gathering outside their gates.
Vanessa Hart was not a woman who accepted rejection gracefully.
After Arthur Hart received the security footage from Marcus Vance, he realized the legal battle was unwinnable and retreated, attempting to minimize the damage to his company. But Vanessa was fueled by a toxic combination of wounded pride, embarrassment, and obsessive jealousy.
She could not accept that she had been traded for a woman who earned an hourly wage.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Grace was driving Ethan’s secondary vehicle—a sensible silver SUV—back from Noah’s pediatric checkup. Noah was fast asleep in his car seat in the back, holding his gray stuffed elephant.
As Grace slowed down at an intersection three miles from the estate, a heavy dark sedan pulled out from a side street and deliberately rammed into the passenger side of her SUV.
The metal crunched loud, forcing Grace’s vehicle onto the concrete curb.
Grace gasped, her seatbelt tightening violently around her chest. Airbags deployed with a loud bang, filling the cabin with white dust.
"Noah!" Grace screamed, ignoring the sharp pain in her shoulder as she turned frantically toward the backseat.
Noah woke up crying, terrified by the sudden noise and movement, but he was completely uninjured in his reinforced car seat.
"I'm here, sweetie! I'm here!" Grace unbuckled herself frantically, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Before she could open her door, the driver’s side door of the dark sedan swung open.
Vanessa Hart stepped out into the rain, wearing a dark trench coat, her eyes wild and bloodshot. She marched over to Grace’s side of the car and began pounding on the window with a heavy metal flashlight.
"Get out of the car!" Vanessa screamed, her voice shrill and unhinged over the sound of rain. "Get out, you little thief!"
"Vanessa! Stop!" Grace shouted through the glass, locking all the doors and pulling out her cell phone with trembling hands. She dialed Ethan’s speed dial immediately.
"Grace? What’s wrong?" Ethan’s voice answered on the first ring, instant concern in his tone.
"Ethan! Vanessa slammed her car into us! She’s outside the SUV trying to break the window!" Grace cried, keeping her arm raised to shield her head as spiderweb cracks began appearing on the reinforced glass. "Noah is in the back! We're at the corner of Ocean Drive and 14th!"
"Hold on! I'm coming! Stay inside!" Ethan roared over the phone, the sound of his chair slamming back echoing through the line.
"You took my life!" Vanessa shrieked outside, swinging the heavy flashlight again. CRACK! The driver's window shattered inward, raining safety glass over Grace’s jacket.
Vanessa reached through the broken window, grabbing Grace by her shirt collar, her nails digging into Grace’s neck. "You ruined my family! You ruined my wedding! You think you get to keep his money?!"
"Let go of me!" Grace fought back, grabbing Vanessa’s wrists and using her strength to push the unhinged woman back against the outside of the car door.
Suddenly, the loud wail of police sirens filled the air.
Two Miami police cruisers screeched around the corner, followed closely by Ethan’s black sports car, which mounted the curb and cut off any possibility of Vanessa escaping.
Ethan threw his door open before his car had even fully stopped. He ran toward the wrecked SUV like a madman, his face contorted in pure, terrifying rage.
"Get away from her!" Ethan shouted, slamming into Vanessa and physically yanking her away from Grace’s window, shoving her back into the hands of two approaching police officers.
"Ethan! She attacked me!" Vanessa screamed as the officers forced her arms behind her back, snapping handcuffs around her wrists. "She ran into my car! She’s trying to frame me!"
"Shut up!" the officer barked, holding her down against the hood of the police cruiser. "We have dashboard camera footage from three witnesses, lady!"
Ethan didn't give Vanessa another glance. He reached through the shattered window, opened the door from the inside, and pulled Grace out of the wreck into his arms.
"Are you hit? Are you bleeding?" Ethan panicked, his hands flying over her face, her neck, her arms, checking every inch of her.
"I'm okay, I'm okay," Grace sobbed, holding onto his shirt. "Noah is in the back! Check Noah!"
Ethan scrambled into the backseat, unbuckling the crying three-year-old and lifting him out into the rain, pressing both Grace and Noah tightly against his chest as emergency medical technicians rushed forward with blankets.
As the officers loaded a screaming, kicking Vanessa into the back of a police transport van, an officer walked over to Ethan.
"Mr. Cole, she’s going away for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, hit-and-run, and child endangerment," the officer said grimly. "She won't be getting bail anytime soon."

Ethan looked at the police van, his eyes burning with absolute disgust.
"Make sure she never comes near my family again," Ethan said, his voice cold and hard as steel.
