Chapter 2 - The Sentence

Ethan’s face was completely devoid of color. His gray eyes were as cold as ice, locked onto Vanessa with an intensity that made the heiress physically step back.

He didn't yell. He didn't rush. He walked forward with slow, deliberate strides, the sound of his shoes against the hardwood floor the only noise in the massive room besides Noah’s frantic sobs.

"Ethan..." Vanessa stammered, her voice high and breathless. Her composure had completely disintegrated. "Ethan, darling, I... she disrespected me! She put her hands on me when I was trying to bond with Noah! She’s dangerous, Ethan, she—"

Ethan didn't even look at Vanessa. He bypassed her completely, dropping to one knee beside Grace and Noah.

He pulled his son into a firm embrace with one arm, while his other hand reached out gently to cup Grace’s chin. He turned her face slightly toward the light, examining the red mark spreading across her cheekbone. His thumb brushed over her jawline, his touch surprisingly soft.

"Are you okay?" he asked softly, his voice thick with emotions he usually kept buried deep within his chest.

"I'm fine," Grace whispered, though a tear slipped down her uninjured cheek. "Noah..."

"I've got him," Ethan said. He picked up his crying son, pressing the boy’s head into his shoulder. Noah wrapped his tiny arms around Ethan’s neck, shivering.

Ethan stood up to his full six-foot-two frame. He finally turned his gaze toward Vanessa.

Margaret stepped forward quickly, sensing the catastrophe unfolding. "Ethan, let’s be reasonable here. Vanessa was simply overwhelmed! The nanny was being insubordinate—"

"Silence, Mother," Ethan said.

It wasn't a raise of his voice; it was a command backed by thirty-eight years of absolute authority. Margaret’s mouth snapped shut in shock.

Ethan turned his cold, calculating gaze back to Vanessa, who was trying desperately to adjust her silk blouse, her hands trembling.

"Ethan, please," Vanessa begged, taking a half-step forward. "We have a wedding in six months! Our families are merging! Hart Global just signed the expansion contract with Cole Robotics yesterday! You can't let a servant come between us!"

Ethan looked at her as if she were a piece of trash washed up on his private beach.

"There will be no wedding," Ethan said.

The words were spoken clearly, carrying across the silent living room with terrible finality.

Vanessa gasped. "What? You... you can't be serious! Over a slap? Over a nanny?!"

"She is not a nanny," Ethan said, his voice ringing with a strength that made Grace’s heart skip a beat. "She is the woman who saved my son when he was dying of grief. She is the heart of this home. And you just laid your hands on her in front of my child."

"Ethan! Think about the company!" Margaret yelled, abandoning her calm facade entirely. "Arthur Hart will pull his shipping lines! You'll lose millions!"

"Then I'll lose millions," Ethan replied without a second of hesitation. He looked directly into Vanessa’s terrified, tear-streaked eyes. "Effective immediately, Cole Robotics terminates all business relations with Hart Global Logistics. My legal team will deliver the breach papers to your father’s office by five o'clock."

"Ethan, no! My father will ruin you!" Vanessa shrieked, her hands flying to her mouth.

"He can try," Ethan said coldly. "Now, get out of my house before I have security throw you out onto the pavement."

"Ethan!" Margaret grabbed his arm, but he shook her off with absolute disgust.

"You too, Mother," Ethan said, looking down at the woman who had brought him into the world. "You brought this venom into my home. You orchestrated this humiliation. Until you can respect the people who actually care for my son, you are not welcome in this house."

Margaret looked as if she had been struck by lightning. She opened her mouth to argue, but the sheer rage in Ethan’s eyes silenced her. Grasping her designer bag, she turned to Vanessa. "Let's go, Vanessa. He's lost his mind."

Vanessa glared at Grace with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You'll pay for this, you pathetic little gold-digger. You think he's going to marry you? You're just a replacement for a dead woman!"

"Get out!" Ethan roared, his voice finally exploding through the house like a thunderclap.

Vanessa jumped back in terror, turned, and ran out the front doors, her high heels clattering frantically against the marble. Margaret followed her quickly, slamming the massive double doors behind them.

The silence returned to the living room, heavy and suffocating.

Ethan took a deep breath, trying to steady his surging adrenaline. Noah was still whimpering softly into his neck.

Grace sat down on the sofa, her hands shaking as she tried to smooth her hair. The reality of what had just happened was crashing down on her. A multi-million-dollar wedding canceled. A corporate partnership destroyed. All because of her.

"Ethan..." Grace stammered, looking up at him with wide, apologetic eyes. "I... I am so sorry. You didn't have to ruin your business for me. I could have just taken a few days off, or—"

Ethan set Noah down on the couch beside her. He leaned down, placing his hands on the armrests on either side of Grace, trapping her gently within his space.

"Look at me, Grace," he ordered softly.

She raised her eyes to meet his.

"You will never apologize for being assaulted in my home," Ethan said, his voice rich with an emotion he had suppressed for years. "And you will never, ever say that I ruined anything for you. You are worth more than every contract my company has ever signed."

Grace stared at him, her lips parting slightly.

Noah reached out, grabbing Grace’s fingers. "Mommy cheek hurt?"

Grace looked down at the boy, her heart overflowing. She pulled Noah into her lap, resting her chin on his head. "I'm okay, sweetie. Mommy’s okay."

Ethan froze at the word, a strange, intense warmth blooming in his chest. He reached out and touched Grace’s shoulder gently.

"Go upstairs and put some ice on that cheek," Ethan murmured. "I’m going to make a few phone calls. And then... we need to talk."
