Chapter 15 - A Choice More Dangerous Than Revenge

Victor did not speak for nearly a minute.

Lily had learned his silences.

Some were calculation.

Some anger.

This one was grief.

Daniel Reese had been more than an attorney.

He had stood beside Victor after his father's death.

Helped restructure businesses.

Helped close violent operations.

Advised him through investigations.

Shared holidays.

Held confidential documents.

Victor trusted almost nobody.

He had trusted Daniel.

Michael watched his brother carefully.

"Victor."

"What was his real name?"

Michael answered.

"Daniel Mercer."

Paul's younger brother.

Victor laughed once.

A hollow sound.

"Of course."

Lily moved closer.

"Maybe the photo is—"

"No."

Victor shook his head.

"I know that smile."

She stopped.

Samuel received confirmation.

Daniel had left federal offices twenty minutes earlier.

Security footage showed him voluntarily entering a sedan.

Plate connected to Paul's network.

Victor stared through the hospital window.

"I told him everything."

Michael said, "That's why Paul knew everything."

Victor's eyes became cold.

"I told Daniel about internal audits."

"Yes."

"I told him about Mason."

"Yes."

"I gave him access codes."

"Probably."

"I trusted him with Michael's case after he died."

Michael winced.

Victor turned.

"Daniel helped me investigate your death."

The cruelty of it landed.

Paul's own brother had watched Victor grieve while quietly burying the truth.

Something inside Victor changed.

Lily saw the danger.

Not outward rage.

Worse.

Calm.

"Where would Paul go?" Victor asked.

Michael answered immediately.

"Old courthouse annex."

Samuel frowned.

"Downtown?"

"Underground records level."

"Why?"

"Paul built an escape route through adjoining service tunnels."

Victor grabbed his coat.

Lily stepped in front.

"No."

He looked at her.

"No?"

"Not like this."

"Move."

"You're angry."

"Accurate."

"And you're thinking about killing him."

Nobody spoke.

Victor's eyes stayed on hers.

"Move, Lily."

She did not.

"What happens if you do?"

"He stops breathing."

"After that."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"Paul is the reason—"

"Paul is one reason."

She lowered her voice.

"If you kill him, his lawyers say he was silenced."

Victor said nothing.

"The victims lose testimony."

Silence.

"Daniel gets to say Paul controlled him."

She stepped closer.

"And every headline calling you a violent criminal becomes easier to believe."

Victor's face hardened.

"You think I care about headlines?"

"No."

Lily's voice softened.

"I think you care about changing."

That hit.

Michael looked away.

Lily continued.

"Your father used fear because fear was easier than justice."

Victor's eyes flashed.

"Do not compare me to him."

"I'm not."

She held his gaze.

"I'm asking you not to."

Long silence.

Then Victor exhaled.

Samuel stepped forward.

"We arrest Paul."

Victor nodded once.

"Alive."

Lily moved aside.

"Good."

Victor paused beside her.

"You just told me what to do."

"Yes."

"I dislike it."

"I know."

He walked away.

Michael whispered to Lily, "I like you."

She smiled.

They headed downtown.

This time Victor worked with federal agents openly.

No private army.

No secret weapons.

No hidden negotiation.

It felt unnatural.

Maybe that was the point.

The courthouse annex had been abandoned for renovations.

Samuel's team entered from three sides.

Michael guided them to the underground passage.

Lily remained in a command van.

Not because Victor ordered her.

Because she chose it.

That distinction mattered.

She monitored building plans with Liam, who had arrived after being cleared by investigators.

Liam pointed at a tunnel.

"There's another exit."

Lily radioed.

"Victor, west service corridor connects to the subway maintenance level."

His voice answered.

"Got it."

Minutes passed.

Shots echoed over comms.

Lily's stomach tightened.

Then Mason's voice.

"Paul moving west."

Lily followed the map.

"He's heading toward Platform C."

Samuel redirected agents.

Liam stared at another screen.

"Wait."

"What?"

"Someone opened a door behind Victor."

Lily zoomed in.

Daniel.

Moving through a maintenance corridor.

Toward Victor.

"Victor!"

No response.

Static.

"Victor!"

Liam grabbed another radio.

"Mason!"

Nothing.

Lily made a decision.

She left the van.

Liam caught her arm.

"Where are you going?"

"Inside."

"You promised—"

"I promised nobody."

"Lily."

She looked at him.

"Stay here and keep the map open."

He knew that expression.

There was no stopping her.

She entered through a side access point with two agents.

Down concrete stairs.

Through a corridor.

Then heard voices.

Daniel.

"You were always so desperate to be different from your father."

Victor replied.

"And you were always better at pretending."

Lily stopped around the corner.

Daniel stood behind Victor with a gun.

Paul was farther down the tunnel.

Victor's weapon lay on the floor.

Daniel smiled.

"Paul wanted money."

Victor glanced at him.

"And you?"

"Recognition."

"From whom?"

"My father."

Victor frowned.

Daniel laughed.

"Your father destroyed mine."

History.

Always history.

Daniel continued.

"Our father worked for Hayes Shipping. Your father accused him of theft."

"Was he guilty?"

"No."

"Proof?"

"You sound like him."

Victor watched.

Daniel's hand shook slightly.

This was personal.

Not strategic.

Lily signaled to the agents.

They moved around opposite sides.

Daniel continued.

"Paul and I spent our lives hearing the Hayes name."

Victor's voice was calm.

"So you became worse than him to punish a dead man."

Daniel's face twisted.

"Shut up."

"You inflated debts."

"Shut up."

"You threatened families."

"Shut up!"

"You planned to murder Lily."

Daniel's weapon moved.

Victor saw it.

The moment Daniel's attention shifted, Victor struck.

The gun fired.

Lily flinched.

Victor slammed Daniel into the wall.

Agents rushed.

Daniel fell.

Handcuffed.

Alive.

Victor immediately looked for Lily.

He saw her.

Anger crossed his face.

"You were supposed to be in the van."

"I was."

"And then?"

"I wasn't."

He almost shouted.

Then stopped.

This was exactly what she had accused everyone of doing.

Deciding for her.

He exhaled.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Good."

Paul ran.

Samuel's team chased him onto the abandoned platform.

Paul reached the edge.

Train tracks below.

No train.

Dead end.

Victor approached slowly.

Paul laughed.

"Here we are."

Victor stopped.

Agents surrounded them.

Paul looked at Victor.

"Go on."

Victor said nothing.

"You've wanted this."

"No."

"Liar."

Paul stepped closer to the edge.

"Kill me."

Victor's face remained calm.

"No."

Paul's smile faded.

Victor continued.

"You don't get to become a martyr."

Samuel moved in.

Paul suddenly lunged for an agent's gun.

Victor tackled him.

They hit the platform.

Paul fought wildly.

Victor could have struck harder.

Could have ended it.

Instead he pinned Paul's arm.

Samuel cuffed him.

Paul looked up.

Disbelief.

Victor leaned closer.

"My father would have killed you."

Paul smiled.

"I know."

Victor stood.

"That's why I won't."

Agents lifted Paul.

For the first time, Paul looked afraid.

Not of Victor.

Of surviving.

Of trial.

Of testimony.

Of every person he had exploited standing in court.

As he was taken away, Lily walked beside Victor.

"You chose correctly."

Victor glanced at her.

"I remain unconvinced."

She smiled.

Then winced.

Victor immediately noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Lily."

She looked down.

Blood.

A small dark stain spreading across her sweater near her side.

The bullet Daniel fired had not missed.

Victor's face lost all color.

"Lily."

Her knees weakened.

He caught her.

She looked confused.

"I didn't feel it."

Victor lifted her into his arms.

Everything around him disappeared.

"Lily. Stay awake."

She tried to smile.

"You say that a lot."

"Lily."

His voice broke.

Her eyes began to close.

May you like

And for the first time that night, Victor Hayes lost control completely.
