Chapter 12 - The Night Victor Lost Control

Lily had never met Claire Hayes.

But she knew immediately who she was.

The resemblance to Victor was unmistakable.

Same dark intensity around the eyes despite Claire's lighter hair.

Same stillness.

Same ability to make a room feel smaller without raising her voice.

Claire smiled.

"You must be Lily."

Mason slowly lowered his weapon.

"Claire."

"Hello, Mason."

Lily stared.

Victor had never mentioned a sister.

Not once.

Claire noticed.

"He didn't tell you I existed."

"No."

"Typical."

Mason spoke.

"What are you doing here?"

Claire laughed softly.

"Cleaning up."

Lily's gaze moved toward the gun.

"With that?"

"When necessary."

Mason stepped slightly in front of Lily.

Claire raised the weapon.

"Don't."

He stopped.

"Paul thinks he built this rebellion," Claire said.

"He didn't?"

"Paul builds nothing. He takes."

"And Ethan?"

"Maintains."

Lily understood.

"You started it."

Claire looked impressed.

"Victor said you were observant."

"You've spoken to Victor?"

"Not recently."

"Then how would you know what he says about me?"

Claire's smile deepened.

"Because I've been watching."

Lily felt cold.

"The camera."

"Not mine."

"Then?"

"Paul watched Victor. I watched Paul."

Layers.

Everyone spying on everyone.

Claire walked toward the table.

"Victor was supposed to be removed without bloodshed."

Mason laughed bitterly.

"He was shot."

"Paul became impatient."

"What did you want?"

Claire's face hardened.

"Our family's company back."

Lily frowned.

"It is Victor's."

"No."

Claire glanced around.

"It belonged to my father."

"Your father is dead."

Claire's eyes flashed.

"And Victor spent seven years destroying everything he built."

Lily thought of Michael.

The debt.

The violence.

"Maybe it needed destroying."

Claire looked at her.

There was a dangerous pause.

"Careful."

Lily surprised herself.

"No."

Claire's eyebrows lifted.

Lily continued.

"Everyone keeps telling me to be careful because powerful people might get angry."

She looked around the hidden archive.

"I worked eighteen hours yesterday because I was careful."

Mason glanced at her.

Lily stepped closer.

"Paul threatened my brother because I was careful."

Claire's weapon remained raised.

Lily's voice stayed calm.

"I think I'm finished."

Claire studied her.

Then unexpectedly smiled.

"I see why Victor is distracted."

"He's not."

"He brought you into this."

"I brought myself."

That answer erased the smile.

Above them, footsteps sounded.

Claire glanced toward the stairs.

That was enough.

Mason moved.

He knocked the gun aside.

It fired into the ceiling.

Lily ducked.

Claire struck Mason with her elbow.

Mason staggered.

Lily grabbed the laptop.

Claire turned.

"Put that down."

Lily ran deeper into the archive.

A shot hit the shelf beside her.

Tapes exploded onto the floor.

Mason tackled Claire.

"Go!"

Lily ran.

Behind the shelves, another door.

Locked.

She tried it.

Nothing.

Then remembered Victor.

Locks are temporary.

She looked around.

Metal fire extinguisher.

She smashed the handle.

Once.

Twice.

The latch broke.

She burst through.

A tunnel.

Old.

Stone.

Probably leading toward the house.

Lily ran.

The laptop under one arm.

Footsteps behind.

Not Mason.

Heavier.

Claire's guards.

Lily kept going.

At the main house, Paul was becoming nervous.

Victor saw it.

Paul looked repeatedly toward the lake.

"Expecting someone?" Victor asked.

Paul ignored him.

Liam stood.

One guard forced him down.

Victor's eyes flashed.

Paul said, "Your sister really did ruin you."

Victor froze.

"Claire?"

Paul smiled.

So Paul knew.

"You thought she was in Europe."

Victor's face changed.

"Where is she?"

"Close."

Liam looked confused.

"You have a sister?"

"Unfortunately."

Paul walked closer.

"Claire approached me two years ago."

"Why?"

"She wanted the old organization restored."

Victor laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

"You inherited everything."

"Because she refused it."

"She changed her mind."

Victor stared toward the hallway.

Old childhood memories rearranged themselves.

Claire angry after their father died.

Claire accusing Victor of destroying the family.

Then disappearing overseas.

He had assumed distance meant surrender.

It had meant planning.

Paul continued.

"But Claire made one mistake."

Victor looked at him.

"She believed she could control me."

Paul's smile became ugly.

Victor understood.

Paul had turned on Claire too.

Every alliance in this conspiracy had become a betrayal.

"Where is she?"

"Archive."

Victor's pulse changed.

Lily.

Paul saw it.

"There."

He whispered.

"That look."

Victor stepped forward.

Paul raised his weapon.

"Finally something scares you."

Victor ignored the gun.

"If Claire touches Lily—"

"You'll what?"

Victor stopped.

He realized Paul wanted rage.

Wanted Victor careless.

Wanted him becoming the monster everyone expected.

Victor breathed once.

Slowly.

Then smiled.

Paul frowned.

"What?"

"You still don't understand her."

A crash sounded beneath the house.

Everyone turned.

A side door burst open.

Lily emerged covered in dust, carrying the laptop.

"Lily!" Liam shouted.

Victor moved instantly.

A guard raised his gun.

Victor struck him before he could aim.

Chaos erupted.

Lily threw herself behind a marble column.

Paul fired.

Victor tackled him.

They hit the floor.

Liam grabbed the fallen guard's weapon.

Another man surrendered.

Outside, Samuel's team breached the front doors.

Lily held the laptop against her chest.

Victor and Paul fought across the floor.

Victor's injured shoulder nearly gave out.

Paul saw it.

He drove a fist into the wound.

Victor collapsed to one knee.

Lily cried out.

Paul grabbed the gun.

Pointed it at Victor.

"Your father was right."

Victor looked up.

Paul's finger tightened.

Then Liam shouted.

"Paul!"

Paul turned.

Liam stood twenty feet away.

Gun shaking in his hands.

Paul smiled.

"You won't."

Liam's breathing was ragged.

For years, every terrible choice in his life had started with impulse.

Bet.

Borrow.

Lie.

Run.

Now his finger rested on a trigger.

Lily looked at him.

"Liam."

He heard her.

One word.

He lowered the gun.

Paul laughed.

Mistake.

Victor swept Paul's legs.

Samuel's agents rushed in.

Within seconds, Paul was pinned to the floor.

Handcuffed.

Alive.

Victor stood slowly.

He could barely move his shoulder.

But his first look was not toward Paul.

It was toward Lily.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head.

"You?"

"Frequently."

She almost laughed.

Then Victor saw the laptop.

"What is that?"

"Proof."

"Of Paul?"

"No."

Lily looked toward the basement entrance.

"Of Claire."

Victor went still.

Footsteps emerged.

Mason appeared.

Blood on his forehead.

Claire beside him.

Hands zip-tied.

Her face furious.

Victor stared at his sister.

Claire stared back.

Neither spoke.

Then Claire looked at Lily.

"You don't know what you've done."

Lily met her eyes.

"For once, I think I do."

Claire smiled coldly.

"You think this ends because Paul is arrested?"

Victor stepped beside Lily.

Claire's eyes moved toward him.

"You always were sentimental about strays."

Victor's expression changed.

"Lily isn't a stray."

Claire looked amused.

"What is she, then?"

Victor opened his mouth.

But Lily answered first.

"Free."

Silence.

Lily looked directly at Claire.

"My brother's debt is paid."

She looked at Paul.

"You don't own me."

Then at Victor.

"And neither do you."

Victor held her gaze.

A long moment.

Then he nodded.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"I don't."

Something shifted between them.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Something more important.

Respect.

Samuel took Claire away.

Paul followed.

As officers moved through Briar Point collecting evidence, Victor stood beside the lake.

Lily approached.

"You okay?"

He almost laughed.

"Nobody has asked me that in years."

"I asked because you look terrible."

"Better."

They stood in silence.

Then Lily handed him the laptop.

Victor did not take it.

"You keep it."

"Why?"

"Insurance."

"Against you?"

Victor looked at her.

"Especially against me."

Lily stared.

Then took the laptop back.

For the first time since entering Victor Hayes's estate, she believed something she had never expected to believe.

He wanted her to have the power to walk away.

May you like

And that frightened her less than how much she suddenly wanted to stay until this was finished.
