Chapter 6 - The Dead Man in the Closet

Claire could not breathe.

The man on the screen was older.

Thinner.

A scar crossed the left side of his face.

But she knew him.

“Ethan.”

Dante stared at the monitor.

“That’s impossible.”

Claire was already running.

The drive back felt endless.

Every memory she had buried returned at once.

Ethan holding newborn Lily.

Ethan kissing Claire before work.

Police telling her his car had burned after leaving the highway.

The closed coffin.

The funeral.

Three years of grief.

Three years of poverty.

Three years telling Lily her father was in heaven.

When they reached the estate, Ethan was gone.

But he had left a message.

Three words written on Claire’s mirror.

I’M SORRY, CLAIRE.

She shattered the mirror with her fist.

Dante caught her wrist.

“Don’t.”

“He’s alive.”

“I know.”

“He let us bury him.”

“I know.”

“He let Lily grow up without him.”

Dante said nothing.

Claire began crying.

Not quietly.

Not gracefully.

Three years came out of her.

When she finally stopped, Lily entered with Sofia.

“Mommy?”

Claire wiped her face.

Lily saw the broken mirror.

“Are you hurt?”

“No, baby.”

Claire knelt.

“There’s something Mommy needs to tell you.”

Before she could, Dante’s phone rang.

Ethan.

Dante put it on speaker.

“Claire.”

She froze.

That voice.

Older.

But unmistakable.

“You don’t get to say my name.”

“I know.”

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“You watched us suffer.”

“I was protecting you.”

“Don’t you dare.”

Lily looked confused.

Claire turned away.

Ethan continued.

“The crash was supposed to kill me. Marco ordered it. I survived.”

“Then why didn’t you come home?”

“Because Anthony found me in the hospital.”

Dante looked at Claire.

Ethan continued.

“He told me if I returned, you and Lily would die.”

“So you vanished.”

“Yes.”

“You could have contacted police.”

“Anthony had police.”

“Dante?”

“I thought the Morettis were part of it.”

Dante’s expression tightened.

“Where are you now?”

“Following Anthony.”

“Why?”

“He has the original ledger.”

“What’s in it?”

“Everything.”

Names.

Judges.

Police officials.

Politicians.

Businesses.

Every person Anthony had corrupted.

Enough evidence to dismantle his network permanently.

“Where is Anthony going?”

Dante asked.

“The harbor.”

They moved immediately.

Claire stayed with Lily.

This time she did not argue.

Two hours passed.

Then three.

At 11:21 p.m., Dante called.

Anthony was captured.

Ethan was alive.

Claire sat down.

“Is he coming here?”

“If you want him to.”

She looked at Lily sleeping beside her.

“Yes.”

Ethan arrived after midnight.

Claire met him alone.

He stopped ten feet away.

“Hi.”

She slapped him.

Hard.

He accepted it.

Then she hit his chest.

“You left me.”

“I know.”

“You left her.”

“I know.”

“She asked why every other child had a daddy.”

His face broke.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

“I watched from a distance.”

“That makes it worse!”

“I know.”

Claire cried again.

Ethan did too.

Then Lily appeared at the staircase.

“Mommy?”

Ethan froze.

His daughter looked at him.

He looked at her.

Lily tilted her head.

“Who are you?”

Ethan sank to his knees.

Claire had imagined this moment a thousand ways.

None looked like this.

“This is Ethan,” she said carefully.

Lily looked at him.

“My daddy was Ethan.”

He covered his mouth.

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

Lily stared.

Then looked at Claire.

“Is he my daddy?”

“Yes.”

Ethan whispered.

“If you want me to be.”

Lily walked closer.

She studied his scar.

“Were you lost?”

Ethan began crying.

“Yes.”

“For a long time?”

“Yes.”

Lily considered that.

Then held out a red crayon.

“You can draw with me.”

Ethan broke completely.

Claire turned away.

Dante stood in the hallway.

He said nothing.

Later, Ethan gave his statement.

Marco confessed.

Anthony’s ledger exposed the entire conspiracy.

But one problem remained.

Anthony refused to surrender the encryption key needed to open the digital archive.

Without it, dozens of powerful accomplices could escape.

Ethan knew part of the password.

Marco knew another.

Neither knew the final sequence.

Anthony smiled from behind reinforced glass.

“You’ll never find it.”

Claire watched from the observation room.

Then she remembered something Ethan had written years ago.

A habit.

Whenever he created passwords, he used things nobody else considered important.

Dates.

Private jokes.

Drawings.

Claire suddenly looked at Lily.

“Her birthday.”

Ethan shook his head.

“I tried.”

“Not the date.”

Claire looked at the photographs from the original evidence.

At Lily’s drawing.

Three figures.

A car.

A fourth man.

And beneath them, numbers disguised as childish marks.

Claire leaned closer.

“These aren’t Lily’s.”

Dante stared.

“What?”

Claire pointed.

“Lily draws circles backward. These numbers were already on the car before she colored over them.”

Dante enlarged the original driveway photograph.

Tiny scratches appeared beneath the crayon.

Six digits.

Rocco entered them.

The archive opened.

Thousands of files appeared.

Anthony’s entire network.

Dante exhaled.

“It’s over.”

But Rocco was staring at one newly decrypted message.

“No.”

Dante turned.

“What?”

Rocco opened it.

The message had been sent that morning.

From Anthony.

To an unknown number.

It contained only one instruction.

IF I’M TAKEN, FINISH THE MORETTIS.

Below it was a countdown.

Eleven hours.

May you like

Forty-two minutes.

And it was already running.
