Chapter 3 - What Ethan Left Behind

Dante pushed Claire behind the concrete wall.
“Lily.”
Claire grabbed her daughter.
Rocco signaled two men toward the stairs.
Marco’s voice came again.
“You know how this works, Dante.”
Dante answered from below.
“I do.”
“Then you know I’m not alone.”
Dante looked toward a small basement window.
A laser dot appeared briefly on the wall.
Sniper.
Claire’s breath stopped.
Dante saw it too.
He lowered his voice.
“Back exit?”
Mr. Alvarez had once shown Claire a service tunnel leading into the neighboring building.
She pointed behind stacked shelves.
“There.”
Rocco moved.
Dante called upstairs.
“You want the key?”
“Yes.”
“Come get it.”
Marco laughed.
“You always did confuse courage with stupidity.”
Dante nodded toward Claire.
Go.
She carried Lily through the narrow passage while Rocco led.
Dust coated her clothes.
Lily remained astonishingly quiet.
Perhaps children understood danger better than adults believed.
They emerged inside an abandoned laundromat.
A vehicle waited in the alley.
Dante appeared thirty seconds later.
They drove.
Nobody spoke until three blocks separated them from the building.
Claire looked at him.
“Mr. Alvarez.”
“My men have him.”
“Marco?”
“Gone.”
“You let him go?”
“I chose you and Lily.”
The answer silenced her.
Dante looked away.
“I’m getting tired of people dying because of Marco.”
They went directly to the bank.
The brass key opened box 417293.
Claire expected money.
Instead, they found a cheap flash drive, three handwritten ledgers, a sealed envelope, and an old digital recorder.
The envelope said:
CLAIRE.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Ethan’s handwriting filled two pages.
Claire,
If you're reading this, something happened to me.
She stopped.
Dante stepped away, giving her privacy.
Claire continued.
Ethan confessed everything.
He had worked for Marco.
At first he believed he was merely hiding profits.
Then he discovered Marco was funding a private network designed to overthrow Dante’s father and eventually seize control of the Moretti organization.
Ethan had tried to leave.
Marco threatened Claire.
Then Claire became pregnant.
Ethan began secretly copying records.
His final paragraph broke her.
If Lily is born before I can fix this, tell her her father was afraid. But tell her he tried anyway.
Claire pressed the letter against her mouth.
For three years, she had hated Ethan a little.
Not because he died.
Because she believed he had left her unprepared.
No insurance.
No savings.
Debts she never understood.
Now she understood.
He had been trying to keep her alive.
Dante played the recorder.
Ethan’s voice filled the private bank room.
“If anything happens to me, Marco Bellini did it.”
Claire closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
“There’s more. Marco isn’t working alone. He has someone inside the Moretti family.”
Dante leaned forward.
Ethan named accounts.
Dates.
Transfers.
Then the recording crackled.
“The inside man is—”
Silence.
The file ended.
Rocco cursed.
Dante replayed it.
Same result.
Claire looked at the flash drive.
“Maybe it’s there.”
They opened it on an isolated laptop.
Folders appeared.
Payments.
Photographs.
Audio files.
A map.
Dante clicked the map.
Red marks covered the Moretti estate.
Claire recognized the kitchen.
Garage.
Security room.
Servants’ quarters.
Her room.
“Why is my room marked?”
Dante did not answer.
Then Rocco opened a folder labeled BENNETT.
Photographs filled the screen.
Claire.
Ethan.
Lily.
One photograph had been taken two days ago.
Lily sleeping in her bedroom at the Moretti estate.
Claire went numb.
“Someone was inside my room.”
Dante stood.
“We’re not going back.”
“To the estate?”
“It’s compromised.”
“Where do we go?”
Dante looked at Rocco.
“The lake house.”
They left immediately.
The Moretti lake property was two hours north.
Only four people knew it existed.
Dante.
Rocco.
Dante’s attorney.
And his aunt Sofia.
By sunset, Claire sat beside a fireplace while Lily slept upstairs.
Dante stood at the window.
“You should sleep.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You first.”
He turned.
For once, he looked tired.
Not powerful.
Not frightening.
Just tired.
“Why did you hire me?”
she asked.
“What?”
“Three months ago. Why me?”
“Rosa recommended you.”
“Did you know who Ethan was?”
“No.”
She searched his face.
“I believe you.”
“Thank you.”
“That wasn’t a compliment.”
A faint smile touched his mouth.
Claire looked at the fire.
“Are you going to kill Marco?”
The smile disappeared.
“If I answer honestly, you won’t like it.”
“I already know what you are.”
“Do you?”
“I know enough.”
Dante sat across from her.
“My father believed fear solved everything.”
“Did it?”
“For a while.”
“And then?”
“It created men like Marco.”
Claire considered that.
“What do you believe?”
Dante looked upstairs, toward Lily.
“That I’m still deciding.”
Rocco entered.
“We cracked another folder.”
He placed the laptop down.
“There are payment records from Marco to seven members of estate security.”
Dante read the names.
Two surprised him.
One devastated him.
“Anthony?”
Rocco nodded.
Anthony Moretti.
Dante’s cousin.
The man who had grown up beside him.
Claire saw something close behind Dante’s eyes.
“Where is he?”
“Missing.”
Dante stood.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Dante.”
A distorted voice spoke.
Claire could not hear the words.
Dante’s face changed.
“Proof.”
A message arrived.
Rocco opened it.
A photograph.
Sofia Moretti sat tied to a chair.
Dante’s aunt.
The woman who had raised him after his mother died.
Another message followed.
BRING ETHAN BENNETT’S FILES.
MIDNIGHT.
COME ALONE.
Dante reached for his coat.
Claire stood.
“You can’t.”
“Sofia raised me.”
“And Marco knows that.”
“I’m aware.”
“He wants the files.”
“He’s not getting them.”
“Then what are you taking?”
Dante looked at her.
“A copy.”
Rocco shook his head.
“It’s a trap.”
“Yes.”
“You’re still going?”
“Yes.”
Claire stepped closer.
“Then we use the trap.”
Dante frowned.
“We?”
“Ethan spent years preparing those records. Marco has killed people for them. That means he’s afraid of what they prove.”
“Claire—”
“No. I spent three years thinking my husband abandoned me with nothing. He didn’t. He left us the one thing Marco cannot afford to exist.”
She pointed at the laptop.
“Truth.”
Dante studied her.
Then nodded.
At 11:42 p.m., they prepared a duplicate drive.
Rocco placed a tracker inside its casing.
Dante left.
Claire watched his taillights disappear.
At 11:58, Rocco’s computer beeped.
The tracker moved.
Then stopped.
“Location?”
Claire asked.
Rocco frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
“What?”
He turned the screen.
The tracker was not at Marco’s meeting point.
It was moving back toward them.
Toward the lake house.
Rocco reached for his weapon.
Upstairs, Lily screamed.
Claire ran.
She reached Lily’s bedroom.
The window was open.
The bed was empty.
May you like
And on the pillow lay a red crayon beside a note.
WE HAVE THE GIRL.
