Chapter 6 - The True Inheritance

Six months later.
The cathedral of Saint Mary in downtown Manhattan was filled to capacity with over five hundred guests.
Flowers in shades of white and gold lined the marble aisle. Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows, casting vibrant beams of ruby and sapphire light across the congregation.
At the front of the altar stood Luca Valente.
He was dressed in a tailored black tuxedo, looking impeccably handsome, his posture regal and proud. Beside him stood Marco, his best man, looking sharply dressed and alert.
The heavy organ notes echoed through the vast cathedral as the grand wooden doors opened.
First came the flower girl.
Mia walked down the white runner, wearing a miniature white lace dress with a yellow ribbon tied around her waist. In her hand, she carried a small silver basket filled with white rose petals, which she dropped onto the floor with extreme, hilarious precision—one petal every three steps.
The crowd chuckled softly, charmed by her absolute seriousness.
And then came Elena.
She walked down the aisle on the arm of a senior Italian judge—an old, respected friend of Luca’s father who had gladly stepped in to walk her down the aisle.
Elena’s wedding dress was a masterpiece of lace and silk, trailing behind her like a sea of white foam. Her veil was light as air, revealing her glowing, radiant face.
When her eyes locked onto Luca’s, every person in the cathedral could feel the powerful, invisible bond connecting them.
As she reached the altar, Luca stepped forward and took her hands in his.
The ceremony was beautiful, ancient, and solemn. When the priest asked for the rings, Mia stepped forward, holding a small velvet pillow.
On the pillow rested two gold bands—and beside them, wrapped in a red ribbon, was Mia’s gray rock.
The congregation let out a soft, affectionate laugh.
Luca reached down, picked up the ring, and placed it on Elena’s finger.
"With this ring," Luca vowed, his voice ringing clearly through the silent cathedral, "I give you my name, my life, and my protection, forever."
Elena placed the matching band on his finger, her voice steady and filled with love. "With this ring, I give you my heart, my trust, and my home, forever."
"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the priest declared with a warm smile. "Luca, you may kiss your bride."
Luca pulled Elena into his arms, dipping her slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss that brought the entire cathedral to its feet in a roaring ovation!
That evening, the grand ballroom of the Valente estate was transformed into a fairy-tale reception.
String lights hung from the high ceilings, live jazz music filled the air, and guests toasted to the health and happiness of the new Mr. and Mrs. Valente.
Late into the night, as the music softened into a slow, romantic ballad, Luca walked out onto the marble terrace overlooking the ocean.
Elena joined him, wrapping a warm cashmere shawl around her shoulders, leaning her head against his arm.
A few feet away, sitting on a low velvet bench near the grand french doors, Mia was fast asleep, wrapped in Luca’s tuxedo jacket, her little brown briefcase resting securely beside her feet.
Luca looked down at his sleeping stepdaughter, then pulled Elena close, wrapping his arm around her waist.
"What are you thinking about, my love?" Elena asked softly, looking up at the moonlit sky.
Luca looked at the ring on his finger, then at his wife, feeling a deep, profound peace that settled into the very core of his soul.
"I was thinking about the morning Mia walked into my dressing room wearing that tiny suit," Luca said, a soft, affectionate smile warming his dark eyes.
"She was terrified you were going to be angry," Elena laughed quietly.
"She changed my life," Luca whispered sincerely. "I spent ten years trying to build an empire out of fear and steel. I thought being important meant making people bow."
He looked at Elena, his eyes full of tenderness.
"She taught me that being important simply means having something worth protecting."
Elena smiled, leaning up to kiss his lips beneath the starlit sky.

"And you protect us so well, Luca Valente," she whispered.
As the waves crashed rhythmically against the cliffs below, the boss of the Valente family held his wife tightly in his arms, knowing that the greatest empire he would ever rule was the home he had built for the people he loved.
