Chapter 4 - Betrayal at the Gates

Rain fell in heavy, blinding sheets across Long Island as midnight approached.

Inside the second-floor suite, Mia was fast asleep in the giant bed, clutching her small brown briefcase like a teddy bear.

Elena sat in an armchair near the window, watching the rain streak down the glass. She couldn't sleep. The silver shield pendant hung heavy against her chest, and a persistent sense of dread nagged at the back of her mind.

Suddenly, the lights in the mansion flickered once, twice, and went completely dark.

The soft hum of the air conditioning died. The backup generators should have kicked in within five seconds, but the silence stretched on, heavy and unnatural.

Elena stood up instantly, her hand clutching the pendant around her neck.

Outside in the hallway, she heard a muffled sound—a heavy thud, followed by the metallic click of a gun holster.

"Marco?" Elena called out softly, walking toward the heavy mahogany door.

There was no answer.

She turned the handle slowly and opened the door a crack.

Standing in the darkened hallway, illuminated only by the periodic flashes of lightning from outside, were four men in tactical gear. Marco was on the floor near the stairwell, unconscious.

And standing at the head of the hallway, holding a silenced pistol, was Julian Mercer.

Elena gasped, pulling back and trying to slam the door shut.

Before the latch could catch, a heavy boot kicked the door open with a loud CRACK!

Elena was thrown backward onto the carpet as the four men swept into the room, their flashlights blinding her in the dark.

Julian walked in slowly, his polished shoes clicking softly against the floor. He picked up the silver flashlight from his belt, pointing the beam directly at Elena, who was scrambling backward on the floor toward the bed where Mia was waking up, crying in fear.

"Where are the private ledger keys, Elena?" Julian asked, his voice smooth, cold, and utterly devoid of mercy.

Elena reached the bed, pulling the terrified three-year-old into her lap, wrapping her arms tightly around her daughter.

"I don't know what you're talking about!" Elena cried out, her body trembling violently. "I don't have any keys!"

Julian sighed, stepping closer and lowering the barrel of his gun toward her.

"Don't lie to me," Julian said quietly. "Luca moved you into this suite for a reason. He trusts you. He gave you access to his private safe behind the bookshelf in his study."

"I'm just a housekeeper!" Elena sobbed, holding Mia’s head against her chest so her daughter couldn't see the gun pointed at them. "I don't know anything about his safe!"

"Mama!" Mia wailed, burying her face in Elena’s neck.

Julian took a step toward the bed, his face twisting into a cold sneer. "You should have taken my five thousand dollars when I offered it, Elena. Now, you and your little girl are just loose ends."

He raised the pistol, aiming it directly at Elena’s forehead.

Mia, hearing the threat in Julian’s voice, suddenly looked up from her mother’s shoulder. Despite her tears, the three-year-old reached into her tiny brown briefcase lying on the bed, pulled out her heavy gray rock, and threw it with all her little might straight at Julian’s face!

The rock struck Julian square on the bridge of his nose!

"Argh!" Julian gasped, stumbling backward, dropping his flashlight as blood erupted from his nose!

"Run, Mia!" Elena screamed!

In that fraction of a second of chaos, Elena didn't run toward the door—she pressed the center of the silver shield pendant around her neck!

Instantly, a high-frequency silent distress signal beamed straight through the mansion's secondary satellite relay, bypassing the cut power lines!

Julian wiped the blood from his face with his sleeve, his eyes burning with psychotic rage as he raised his gun again.

"You miserable little brat—" Julian snarled, aiming at Mia.

BANG!

The heavy mahogany doors of the suite exploded inward off their hinges in a shower of wood splinters and shattered iron!

A towering figure tore through the dust like a vengeful demon!

It was Luca.

His coat was soaked with rain, his suit covered in road grit, his dark eyes burning with an infernal, terrifying fury that froze every man in the room!

Before Julian’s men could even raise their weapons, Luca fired three silenced rounds with blinding, military precision!

THWIP! THWIP! THWIP!

The three tactical guards dropped to the floor instantly, their weapons clattering against the hardwood!

Julian spun around, raising his pistol, but Luca was already upon him!

Luca grabbed Julian’s wrist with a crushing, iron grip, slamming his arm against the heavy bedpost!

CRACK!

Julian shrieked in agony as his wrist snapped, his gun falling harmlessly onto the mattress. Luca grabbed Julian by the throat, lifting the older man completely off his feet and slamming him violently against the stone wall!

The room fell dead silent, save for Julian’s desperate, choking gasps for air.

Luca held him pinned against the wall with one hand, his face inches from Julian’s bloody nose.

"You came into my house," Luca whispered, his voice so deep and dangerous it sounded like grinding stones. "You touched my family."

Julian’s eyes bulged with pure, unadulterated terror as he looked into Luca's face. For ten years, he had thought he was manipulating a young, inexperienced boss. In this moment, he realized he was holding a tiger by the tail.

"Luca... please..." Julian choked out, his hands clawing uselessly at Luca’s crushing grip. "We... we were partners..."

"We were never partners," Luca said coldly.

With a flick of his wrist, Luca threw Julian across the room like a ragdoll. Julian crashed through the glass coffee table, groaning in agony on the floor, completely broken.

At that moment, Marco and eight fully armed, loyal Valente security officers burst into the room, their flashlights illuminating the destruction.

"Clear the house," Luca commanded without turning around. "Take Julian to the basement. I will deal with him personally after I take care of what matters."

"Yes, Boss!" Marco shouted, dragging the bloodied Julian out of the room.

Luca stood in the middle of the ruined bedroom.

He slowly turned around. His heavy chest rose and fell, his gun lowered to his side.

Standing near the headboard, shivering and pale, was Elena, clutching Mia tightly in her arms.

Luca dropped his weapon onto the bedside table. He took a slow step forward, then lowered himself onto both knees right in front of them—completely unconcerned with the shattered glass or blood on the floor.

"Elena," Luca whispered, his voice trembling slightly—a sound no man in New York had ever heard from Luca Valente. "Are you hurt?"

Elena looked at him through her tears, shaking her head. "No... no, we're okay."

Luca turned his gaze to Mia.

The three-year-old let go of her mother’s neck and looked at Luca. She saw the blood on his hands, the terrifying fury still lingering in his eyes, but she didn't shrink away.

She reached out a tiny, shaking hand and touched his cheek.

"Did you protect us?" Mia asked softly.

Luca closed his eyes, leaning his cheek into her tiny palm, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

"Yes, Mia," Luca whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I protected you."

"Good," Mia nodded solemnly, a tiny smile breaking through her tears. "Because you're important."

Luca opened his eyes, looking up at Elena.

She was watching him with a look of such profound relief, gratitude, and undeniable love that Luca felt the last cold walls around his heart crumble into dust.

He reached out, wrapping his large, strong arms around both Elena and Mia, pulling them tight against his chest, holding them as the storm raged outside the window.
