Chapter 4 - THE SAFE HAVEN

With Gabriel’s betrayal exposed, the Moretti estate was locked down. Julian refused to let Mia and me leave for our own safety.

"Gabriel has allies within the rival families," Julian explained to me in his private study later that evening. "Until I purge the remaining network of traitors, you and your daughter are targets because Mia is the primary witness."

He moved us into the east wing of the estate—a magnificent suite of rooms overlooking the manicured gardens.

Over the next few weeks, my life transformed completely. Instead of scrubbing hotel floors until my knees bled, I found myself managing the internal administrative operations of the estate at Sofia’s personal request.

I reorganized the household budget, managed vendor contracts, and supervised the domestic staff with warmth and efficiency.

Meanwhile, Julian—a man feared across the entire eastern seaboard—showed a side of himself no one else had ever seen.

Every afternoon at 4:00 PM, he would leave his business meetings to walk through the gardens with Mia. The powerful syndicate boss could often be seen sitting on a wooden bench in his pristine suit, holding a tiny tea cup while Mia served him imaginary tea and cookies.

One evening, I walked out to the sunroom to bring Julian a folder of operational reports. He was standing by the glass window, watching Mia sleep soundly on the sofa wrapped in a fleece blanket.

"You don't belong in this world, Elena," Julian said softly, without turning around.

"I thought I didn't," I replied, stepping closer to him. "I thought this place was only full of danger."

Julian turned to look at me, his eyes full of a quiet, intense emotion. "My father taught me that power was built on violence. For fifteen years, I ran this organization believing that fear was the only way to keep my family safe. But watching your daughter... watching how you care for my mother... I realized I was building a prison, not a home."

"You protected us, Julian," I said gently, touching his forearm. "You kept us safe when you had no reason to."

"I have every reason," Julian whispered, taking my hand in his broad palm. "You gave this house a heart."
