Chapter 2 - The Mafia King’s Unexpected Promise

The office door opened slowly.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

For several seconds, the entire room remained frozen, staring at the dark space beyond the doorway.

I stood beside Rafael Moretti, still wearing a wedding dress that did not belong to me, wondering what kind of secret could make a room full of powerful people afraid.

Then Rafael stepped forward.

“Stay here.”

His voice was quiet.

But somehow, everyone obeyed.

I watched him enter the office.

The guards followed.

My father tried to move closer, but one of Rafael’s men immediately stopped him.

“Mr. Bennett.”

The warning in his voice was enough.

My father stopped.

For the first time that day, I saw him look uncertain.

Not angry.

Not controlling.

Afraid.

And that frightened me more than anything.

Because Edward Bennett was the kind of man who always had a plan.

He always knew what to say.

What to hide.

Who to sacrifice.

But now he was standing outside a door, waiting for someone else to decide what happened next.

I looked toward the office.

I wanted to know what was inside.

I wanted to understand why Serena had written my name on a wedding contract she never planned to sign.

I wanted to know why someone had written:

Clara, do not trust him.

But most of all, I wanted to know who “him” was.

My father?

Rafael?

Someone else?

A few minutes passed before Rafael’s voice came from inside.

“Bring her in.”

Everyone turned toward me.

My heart dropped.

Me?

I slowly walked toward the office.

The guards opened the door.

The first thing I noticed was the smell.

Serena’s perfume.

A familiar scent that didn’t belong in a place she was supposedly never supposed to return to.

The office was exactly what I expected from a man like Rafael Moretti.

Dark wood.

Expensive furniture.

Perfect organization.

Nothing personal.

Except one thing.

A photograph sitting on the desk.

I stepped closer.

It was Serena.

She was smiling.

But there was something strange about the picture.

She wasn’t posing for a wedding photo.

She was looking over her shoulder.

Like she knew someone was watching her.

Rafael stood near the bookshelf, holding a small envelope.

“You know this room?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Your sister did.”

My fingers tightened around my dress.

“She came here?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Rafael looked at the envelope.

“Last night.”

The answer made my chest tighten.

Last night.

The same night she disappeared.

“Why?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told me more than words.

“You need to understand something, Clara.”

The way he said my name felt different now.

Not like an accusation.

Not like a stranger.

“You walked into this mansion believing you were being punished.”

I looked away.

“Wasn’t I?”

His eyes stayed on me.

“No.”

I looked back.

“Then what am I?”

Rafael placed the envelope on the desk.

“The person Serena trusted enough to leave behind the truth.”

I stared at him.

“I don’t understand.”

“I know.”

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a flash drive.

A small piece of plastic.

Something so ordinary.

Yet everyone in the room looked at it like it could destroy them.

“Your sister found something.”

“What?”

Rafael’s expression hardened.

“Something connected to your father.”

My breath stopped.

“No.”

The word came out automatically.

Not because I believed my father was innocent.

But because accepting it meant everything I knew about my family was a lie.

Rafael noticed my reaction.

“You still defend him.”

I looked down.

“I don’t know what I do.”

“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said today.”

I looked up sharply.

Most men would have said it cruelly.

He didn’t.

He said it like a fact.

A painful one.

I crossed my arms.

“You think you know me?”

“No.”

His answer surprised me.

“I think nobody has ever allowed you to know yourself.”

For a moment, I forgot who he was.

The feared mafia boss.

The man my father was terrified of.

The man everyone expected to reject me.

Because standing there, looking at me, he didn’t seem like a monster.

He seemed like someone who understood being used.

Then the door opened.

My father entered.

Without permission.

Rafael immediately changed.

The warmth disappeared.

The businessman returned.

“What did you find?”

My father looked between us.

“Rafael, this situation has gone too far.”

Rafael didn’t move.

“You sent me your daughter wearing your missing daughter’s wedding dress.”

My father’s jaw tightened.

“She agreed.”

I looked at him.

That was a lie.

A complete lie.

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because somehow, even now, he still couldn’t admit what he had done.

Rafael noticed my expression.

“You didn’t agree.”

Silence.

My father looked at me.

A warning.

A command.

The same look he had given me my entire life.

Don’t speak.

But something inside me finally broke.

“No.”

My voice was quiet.

But clear.

“I didn’t.”

My father stared at me.

Rafael said nothing.

He just watched.

“I was told I had no choice.”

The room became colder.

My father stepped forward.

“Clara.”

I looked at him.

For once, I didn’t lower my eyes.

“You told me this family needed saving.”

His expression hardened.

“You should be careful.”

I almost smiled.

Because there it was.

The real him.

Not the father.

The businessman.

The man who threatened people when they stopped obeying.

Rafael stepped between us.

“Leave.”

My father looked at him.

“You would choose her?”

Rafael’s eyes became dangerous.

“I haven’t chosen anyone.”

A pause.

Then he looked at me.

“But I know one thing.”

Everyone waited.

Including me.

“She came here against her will.”

His voice became colder.

“And nobody touches what belongs under my protection.”

The words shocked me.

Protection.

Not ownership.

Not possession.

Protection.

My father left without another word.

But before the door closed, he looked at me.

Not with anger.

With something worse.

Fear.

After he was gone, I turned back to Rafael.

“Why did you do that?”

He looked at the flash drive.

“Because someone forced you into a situation you didn’t create.”

“That’s not enough.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“It isn’t.”

The honesty surprised me.

“I have a reputation, Clara.”

I said nothing.

“People think I am cruel because I never allow weakness.”

He walked toward the desk.

“But there is a difference between weakness and innocence.”

He picked up the flash drive.

“Your sister knew something.”

I looked at the device.

“And you think I can help?”

“I think she wanted you involved.”

“Why?”

Rafael looked toward the photograph.

“Because Serena knew something about me.”

The answer made me nervous.

“What?”

Before he could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The entire mansion disappeared into darkness.

Someone shouted from the hallway.

A guard moved immediately.

Rafael grabbed my arm and pulled me behind him.

The movement was fast.

Protective.

Automatic.

I felt his hand around mine.

Strong.

Steady.

Then a sound came from the office.

A phone.

Not Rafael’s.

Not mine.

A hidden phone.

The ringing continued in the darkness.

Everyone stopped.

Rafael slowly turned toward the desk.

The phone was inside Serena’s old jewelry box.

A box that had been locked.

A box nobody knew existed.

Rafael opened it.

The screen showed one name.

My blood turned cold.

Because it wasn’t Serena.

It wasn’t my father.

It was my name.

Clara Bennett.

Rafael answered.

A voice whispered from the other end.

“Don’t trust Rafael Moretti.”

Then the call ended.

Rafael stared at the phone.

I stared at him.

And before either of us could speak, another message appeared on the screen.

A photo.

Taken moments ago.

Inside the office.

May you like

Showing me standing beside Rafael.

And behind us, reflected in the glass window, was someone who was not supposed to be there.
