Chapter 10 - The Wife Who Changed The Heart Of A Monster

The woman standing in front of me looked exactly like the photograph.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

For years, I had imagined this moment.

I imagined seeing my mother again.

I imagined running toward her.

I imagined asking her why she left me.

But standing there, after all the secrets and lies, I couldn’t move.

Because the woman I had spent my entire life missing was standing in front of me with tears in her eyes.

And I didn’t know whether to hug her or ask why she abandoned me.

“Clara.”

Her voice broke.

“I know you have every reason to hate me.”

I looked at her.

“I don’t hate you.”

A pause.

“I just don’t understand.”

She nodded slowly.

“That is why I came back.”

Rafael stood beside me.

Silent.

Watching.

My mother looked at him.

“Thank you.”

Rafael lowered his eyes.

“I failed you.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You protected my daughter.”

The words surprised me.

My mother stepped closer.

“The night I disappeared, your father found out I had evidence against him.”

“Evidence of what?”

She looked at Rafael.

Then at me.

“Everything.”

She explained everything.

The truth about my father.

The illegal deals.

The hidden accounts.

The years of manipulation.

The reason Serena disappeared.

The reason I was chosen.

My father had never wanted a marriage alliance.

He wanted control.

He believed Serena was too independent.

Too curious.

Too difficult to manipulate.

But me?

He thought I was quiet.

Invisible.

Easy to control.

He was wrong.

Serena had known it.

My mother had known it.

And eventually, I knew it too.

The strongest person in the family had always been the one nobody noticed.

Me.

Days later, the truth finally reached the world.

The documents Serena left behind exposed everything.

Vincent was arrested.

The people who had worked with my father were forced to answer for their actions.

The Bennett family empire collapsed.

But for the first time in my life, I didn’t feel like I was losing something.

I felt free.

Because I had spent years trying to earn a place in a family that never truly saw me.

Now I finally understood.

I never needed their approval.

I only needed my own.

Months passed.

The mansion that once felt like a prison slowly became something different.

A home.

Not because of the walls.

Not because of the money.

Because of the people inside.

My mother stayed.

She and I rebuilt a relationship one day at a time.

There were still painful moments.

There were still questions.

But we stopped pretending the past didn’t exist.

We faced it together.

Serena returned too.

She had been hiding because she knew the people hunting her would never stop.

When she finally walked through the front door again, I cried.

She cried.

And for the first time in months, we were together.

Not as survivors.

As sisters.

“You hate me, don’t you?”

She asked me that night.

I looked at her.

“No.”

“But I left you.”

“You saved me.”

Her eyes filled.

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

I smiled slightly.

“You should have.”

She laughed through her tears.

And that was enough.

Some wounds didn’t disappear.

They healed.

And that was better.

But the person who changed the most was Rafael.

The man everyone feared.

The man people called a monster.

I saw the truth.

He was never a monster.

He was a man who spent years believing kindness was a weakness.

Until he met someone who showed him otherwise.

Me.

One evening, months after everything ended, I stood in front of the same mirror where I had first worn Serena’s wedding dress.

But this time, I wasn’t wearing it because someone forced me.

I was wearing my own wedding dress.

My own choice.

Rafael stood behind me.

No guards.

No fear.

Just him.

“You’re thinking too much.”

I smiled.

“You always know?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

He looked at me through the mirror.

“Because you always bite your lip when you’re worried.”

I laughed.

“You notice everything?”

“Only things that matter.”

The answer made my heart soften.

I turned toward him.

“When we first met, you thought I was a replacement.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I thought everyone else did.”

I looked at him.

“Then what did you think?”

He took my hand.

“I thought you were the one person in that room who wasn’t pretending.”

My eyes filled.

Rafael Moretti had entered my life as a stranger.

A feared man.

A dangerous name.

But he became the person who stood beside me when everyone else walked away.

The person who protected me without trying to own me.

The person who saw me when I felt invisible.

Years later, people still told stories about Rafael Moretti.

They talked about his power.

His empire.

His reputation.

But they never knew the most important part.

The man everyone feared was changed by the woman everyone underestimated.

And I never forgot the day I walked into his mansion wearing another woman’s wedding dress.

Because I thought I was walking into a life that wasn’t mine.

I was wrong.

I wasn’t replacing anyone.

I was finally finding myself.

May you like

And beside me was the man who taught me that I was never someone’s second choice.

I was always the first choice of the person who truly mattered.
