Chapter 5 - The Master of the HouseThe second-floor study of the Costa estate was a sanctuary of dark wood, leather-bound books, and suffocating tension.

When the heavy oak doors swung open, Tessa walked in with her chin held high, though her palms were slick with nervous sweat. She had spent the last three years dodging dangerous people, but standing in front of Damian Costa felt entirely different.
He stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back turned to her, looking out over the churning grey waters of the Atlantic. He wore a dark, impeccably tailored suit that seemed to absorb the dim afternoon light.
“Leave us, Paul,” Damian said without turning around.
Paul nodded once, stepped backward out of the room, and pulled the heavy doors shut behind him, leaving Tessa alone with the most feared man in Manhattan.
For a long minute, nobody spoke. The only sound was the distant ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner.
“You have a habit of walking into places you don't belong, Miss Miller,” Damian finally spoke, his voice deep and smooth, cutting through the silence.
“And you have a habit of interfering in lives that don't belong to you, Mr. Costa,” Tessa fired back instantly, refusing to let him intimidate her.
Damian slowly turned around. His sharp, angular face was carved from stone, his piercing dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that could make hardened criminals look away. He walked toward her, his steps measured and deliberate, stopping just a few feet away.
Up close, he was taller than she expected, radiating a raw, dangerous energy that filled the entire room.
“You think I interfered?” Damian asked quietly, tilting his head. “I protected my investment. My mother hasn't eaten a full meal in weeks until you walked into her room. If financial pressure was going to cause you to break, run away, or compromise her safety, I needed to eliminate that variable.”
“I am not a variable, and I am not a piece of property you can manage on a balance sheet!” Tessa's voice rose, the exhaustion and stress of the past three years finally boiling over into raw anger. “My sister died because we couldn't afford the treatment she needed. I spent three years working twenty-hour days, swallowing my pride, and cleaning toilets just to keep my head above water. I didn't ask for your charity! I didn't ask you to pay my debts!”
Damian didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply watched her with a strange, dark fascination.
“Pride doesn't pay rent, Miss Miller,” Damian said softly. “And it certainly doesn't cure neurological diseases. You were drowning. I threw you a lifeline. In my world, when someone gives you a lifeline, you don't throw it back in their face.”
“Your world is built on control and fear!” Tessa shot back, her chest heaving as she glared up at him. “You sit in a dark room down in the basement watching everyone through cameras because you trust no one. But money can't buy genuine care, Mr. Costa. You can pay a hundred people to stand outside my door, but you couldn't buy my mother a single smile. I gave her that because I wanted to. Not because I was on your payroll.”
The room went dead silent.
Damian stared at her. For a fraction of a second, a flicker of something raw and unreadable crossed his guarded features—something that looked dangerously close to respect.
Before he could answer, a violent crash echoed from the hallway outside the study, followed by the shrill, piercing shriek of a hospital monitor alarm.
Damian’s head snapped toward the door.
East Wing Alert. Room 104.
Without another word, Damian turned and bolted out of the study, sprinting down the hallway toward his mother's bedroom with Tessa right behind him.
When they burst through the double doors of Room 104, they found a scene of absolute chaos.
Two medical nurses were backed against the wall, looking terrified, while Beatrice stood in the center of the room, holding a heavy glass vase, her eyes wild, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

And standing near the doorway, blocking the nurses with a cold, mocking smile, was an unexpected intruder who had somehow bypassed every security checkpoint in the estate.
Victor Vance.
