Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the ArchivesThe subterranean archives of the Costa estate were carved directly into the granite foundation of the cliffside, smelling faintly of old paper, damp stone, and gun oil.

Tessa Miller didn't know anything about archives. She had been sent down by the head housekeeper to retrieve a specific box of specialty linens stored in the lower basement sectors. But as she wheeled her service cart past a heavy steel fire door that had accidentally popped unlatched, her eyes caught sight of something that made her blood run cold.
A computer terminal sat glowing on an oak desk inside an open utility office.
And across the monitor flashed a high-resolution security still of her own face, pulled directly from her employment application, overlaid with federal background check flags, banking records, and a bold red warning label: INVESTIGATION PENDING – ASSET VERIFICATION.
Tessa stopped dead in her tracks. Her cart hit the stone floor with a dull clank.
“What is this?” she whispered, stepping into the dim room.
She reached out, her fingers hovering over the mouse. She clicked a folder labeled MILLER, TESSA - FINANCIAL CLEARANCE.
A digital ledger opened, showing every single debt she had accumulated over the past three years—and right beside them, timestamped at 4:15 a.m. that very morning, was a bank confirmation receipt showing an electronic wire transfer originating from an encrypted corporate account registered to Costa Holdings LLC.
Her breath caught in her throat.
It wasn't a miracle. It wasn't a clerical error or an anonymous benefactor with a heart of gold.
Damian Costa had paid her debts.
The ruthless billionaire, the mafia capo who ruled the Manhattan underworld from the shadows, had bought her financial freedom. Which meant he had been investigating her from the very first day she stepped foot into his mother’s room.
“You shouldn't be down here, Miss Miller.”
A voice cut through the damp air like a razor blade.
Tessa spun around so fast she knocked a stack of ledgers off the desk. They scattered across the floor with a loud slap.
Paul Ferrell stood in the doorway, blocking the only exit out of the utility office. His expression was completely unreadable, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on her with cold, professional calculation.
“You knew,” Tessa said, her voice trembling slightly, though she forced herself to stand tall, refusing to shrink back. “You and your boss. You’ve been watching me the entire time.”
“Damian Costa leaves nothing to chance,” Paul replied calmly, taking a slow step into the room. “When you walked into Room 104 and managed to calm a woman who hasn't recognized her own doctors in six months, the boss wanted to know why. Security protocol requires us to vet everyone.”
“Vetting is one thing,” Tessa snapped, a sudden spark of fiery defiance flaring up in her chest. “Digging through my personal medical debt, paying off my creditors behind my back, and treating me like a security threat in my own workplace is entirely something else! Am I an employee here, or am I a prisoner?”
“You’re an employee who just stumbled onto classified internal files,” Paul said, his tone sharpening as his hand drifted subtly toward his holster. “And under normal circumstances, unauthorized personnel found in this sector are detained immediately.”
Tessa glared at him, her eyes flashing. “Then do it. Call your boss down here and tell him to lock me up. Because I won't be bought, Mr. Ferrell. If he thinks paying my bills gives him the right to own me, he can take his money back.”
Before Paul could answer, the security intercom on the desk hissed to life.
A deep, gravelly voice echoed through the speaker—a voice that carried the terrifying weight of absolute authority.
“Let her go, Paul.”
May you like
Paul paused, staring down at the intercom unit. He pressed the transmission toggle. “Boss, she’s seen the files. She knows about the debt clearance.”
“I heard every word,” Damian’s voice replied, cold and steady. “Bring her up to my study. Immediately.”
