Chapter 3 - The Siege on Eighty-Second Street

While Vincent was dismantling his brother's killer in Midtown, a far more dangerous threat was converging on the Eighty-Second Street townhouse.

By 10:30 AM, the rain was blinding.

I was sitting in the warm kitchen with Sophie, teaching her how to draw stars on yellow construction paper, when the house's emergency alarms suddenly blared through the speakers.

Red security lights flashed along the hallways.

Rosa, the head housekeeper, rushed into the kitchen, her face pale with terror. "Clara! Get the child! Security caught three black SUVs breaking through the rear alley gates!"

"What?!" My heart slammed into my throat.

"It's the Morettis!" Rosa cried, pulling open a hidden panel in the pantry wall. "Anthony’s associates know the police are seizing their accounts! They think if they kidnap you and Sophie, they can force Vincent to exchange the evidence!"

I grabbed Sophie into my arms, holding her tightly against my chest as two Marlo security guards rushed into the kitchen with sidearms drawn.

Loud gunshots echoed from the basement corridor, followed by the shattering of heavy glass.

"UPSTAIRS! NOW!" the lead guard yelled, firing three rounds down the hallway as two masked men burst through the rear entrance.

I sprinted up the marble staircase, my breath ragged, holding Sophie so tight she buried her face in my shoulder.

"Mommy, are we playing a game?" Sophie whimpered, her voice trembling.

"Yes, baby," I whispered through tears, running up to the third floor. "We're playing hide and seek."

There was only one secure room on the third floor with a reinforced steel core door installed years ago.

Julian’s music room.

I rushed inside, slammed the heavy oak door shut, and threw the heavy brass lock into place.

Outside the door, chaotic shouting, running footsteps, and loud impacts echoed through the hallway as Vincent’s guards fought off the intruders.

I huddled behind the grand Steinway piano, holding Sophie in my lap, pressing my hands over her ears to block out the terrifying sounds.

Suddenly, a heavy thud slammed against the music room door.

"OPEN THE DOOR, CLARA!" a harsh, unfamiliar voice yelled from the hallway, followed by the rattle of the brass door handle. "WE KNOW YOU'RE IN THERE WITH THE KID! OPEN IT OR WE BLOW THE LOCK!"

I squeezed my eyes shut, holding my weeping daughter, praying with every fiber of my soul.

Vincent... please...

Suddenly, three rapid gunshots echoed from the hallway, followed by heavy groans and the sound of bodies hitting the floor.

Silence fell over the third floor.

I held my breath, terrified to make a sound.

Slowly, the heavy brass lock clicked from the outside. The oak door swung open.

Standing in the doorway, drenched in rain, his suit jacket ruined, holding a smoking firearm, was Vincent Marlo.

Behind him stood a dozen armed security personnel and uniformed New York City police officers.

Vincent dropped his weapon onto the rug, rushed across the room, and fell to his knees beside the piano, pulling both me and Sophie into his massive, protective embrace.

"I'm here," Vincent breathed heavily, his voice trembling with intense emotion as he kissed my hair and held Sophie close. "I'm here. You're safe. Nobody will ever threaten my family again."
