Chapter 6 - A Harvest of Sunflowers

One year later.

The morning sun shone brightly down on 5th Street in Charlotte's bustling Arts District. The air was filled with the irresistible aroma of freshly baked cinnamon rolls, warm sourdough bread, and rich roasted coffee beans.

A stylish, elegant shopfront with large glass windows displayed a hand-painted gold sign: Solis Bakery & Café.

Inside, the café was filled with happy customers, warm wooden tables, and vases filled with bright yellow sunflowers.

Maren stood behind the polished white marble counter, wearing a clean linen apron over a beautiful summer dress. She was smiling brightly as she handed a fresh pastry box to an elderly couple.

Suddenly, the brass bell above the front door chimed.

The chatter in the café quieted down just a fraction as Jaxson Vance stepped inside. He wore a crisp, dark navy suit, his dark hair neatly styled, looking every bit the powerful king of the city. But the moment his blue eyes locked onto Maren behind the counter, his stern expression melted into a soft, loving smile.

He walked past the tables, stepping right up to the counter.

"Good morning, boss," Maren teased, her eyes sparkling with happiness. "Are you here for your usual espresso?"

"I'm here for the owner," Jaxson replied, reaching across the counter to take her small hand in his, pressing a warm kiss against her knuckles.

From a corner table near the window, Dominic sat quietly in plain clothes, enjoying a slice of blueberry pie while keeping a subtle, watchful eye on the street outside. The city was peaceful, stable, and completely under control.

Jaxson reached into his inner suit jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, sliding it across the marble top.

Maren gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She opened the box to reveal a breathtaking, custom-cut canary diamond ring that sparkled like the sun.

"Jaxson..." she whispered, tears of joy filling her eyes.

Jaxson stepped around the counter, dropping to one knee right there in front of the warm ovens, the smell of fresh bread, and the cheering café patrons.

"Maren Solis," Jaxson said, his deep voice rich with sincerity and deep affection. "A year ago, I found you bleeding on a diner floor and thought I was saving your life. But the truth is, you saved mine. You showed me that a life built only on power is empty without love. Will you make me the happiest man in this city and marry me?"

Maren didn't hesitate for a single second. She dropped to her knees right in front of him, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him into a passionate, breathtaking kiss.

"Yes!" Maren cried out against his lips. "A thousand times yes!"

The entire café erupted into applause and cheers.

Outside, the Charlotte sun burned bright and warm, washing away every shadow of the past, leaving behind only the promise of a bright, beautiful future built on courage, justice, and an eternal, unbreakable love.
