Chapter 5 - The Siege on the Empire

The peace at the estate was abruptly shattered two weeks later.

A rogue faction of a rival syndicate, furious over Jaxson’s ruthless crackdown on the street criminals who had attacked the diner, launched a desperate counter-strike. They aimed to hit Jaxson where he was most vulnerable: his private home.

Late on a Friday night, under the cover of a dense fog, armed men breached the outer gates of the estate, deactivating the perimeter alarms with an insider security code.

Sirens blared inside the house. Red emergency lights bathed the marble hallways in a bloody glow.

Jaxson reacted instantly. He rushed into Maren’s room, pulling her out of bed and handing her over to Dominic.

"Take her to the safe room beneath the wine cellar," Jaxson commanded harshly, racking the slide of a heavy black handgun. "Do not open the door until I come for you."

"Jaxson, no!" Maren screamed, clutching his arm, panic terrorizing her soul. "Don't fight them alone!"

Jaxson grabbed her face in both hands, pressing a hard, fierce kiss onto her lips—a kiss that tasted of devotion, fire, and absolute protection.

"I fought for control of this city for ten years, Maren," Jaxson said into her lips, his eyes burning with an unshakeable confidence. "Now I am fighting for my home. You are my home. Wait for me."

Dominic pulled Maren down the hidden staircase into the steel-reinforced bunker below, locking the heavy electronic door behind them.

For thirty excruciating minutes, the muffled thud of high-caliber gunfire and heavy explosions echoed from the floor above. Maren paced the small concrete bunker, her hands clasped together in silent prayer, realizing with terrifying clarity that she had fallen deeply, completely in love with the dangerous man who had saved her life.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door hissed, and the locks disengaged one by one.

The heavy door swung open.

Jaxson stood in the doorway. His shirt was torn at the shoulder, a superficial cut bleeding down his jawline, and his smoke-stained clothes smelled of gunpowder. But he was standing tall, holding his gun at his side.

Behind him, the house was silent once more.

Maren didn't wait. She bolted across the room and threw herself into his arms, burying her face in his neck and crying tears of profound relief.

Jaxson wrapped his strong arms tightly around her waist, lifting her off her feet and holding her as if he would never let her go again.

"It's over," Jaxson whispered, kissing her hair repeatedly. "The city is clear. You are safe forever."
