Chapter 6 - What Sophia Saw

Emergency lights flickered on.

Dante moved immediately.

He lifted Sophia from the counter and handed her to Clara.

“Safe room.”

Clara nodded.

Outside, guards rushed toward the garden.

Mara was gone.

But she had left the drive.

It hung from the gate by a red ribbon.

A message was taped beneath it.

YOU WANT THE TRUTH?

ASK DANTE WHAT ELENA WAS LEAVING HIM FOR.

Clara read it twice.

Dante’s face changed.

“What does that mean?” she asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

But pain had entered his voice.

Elena had been keeping secrets too.

Marco examined the drive.

It was genuine.

Inside was the Mirror archive.

Everything Elena had collected.

The theft.

Mercer’s payments.

Mara’s false identity.

Julian’s communications.

But also something unexpected.

Divorce papers.

Unsigned.

Dante stared.

Clara said nothing.

Elena had considered leaving him.

Not because she didn’t love him.

Her journal explained why.

She feared the world surrounding Dante would eventually consume Sophia.

She wanted him to leave the criminal side of the family business.

Dante had refused whenever she raised the subject indirectly.

So Elena had prepared to take Sophia away.

Dante sat alone for an hour.

When Clara found him, he was holding the papers.

“She was going to leave.”

“She was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“Of what surrounded you.”

“That’s not better.”

“No.”

Clara didn’t comfort him with lies.

Dante appreciated that.

“I built everything to protect them.”

“And some of what you built brought dangerous people to the door.”

He looked at her.

“You’re not afraid to say things to me.”

“I’m afraid all the time.”

That surprised him.

“I just say them anyway.”

Dante almost smiled.

Sophia entered.

She climbed onto the chair beside him.

Dante showed her Elena’s photograph.

“Mommy wanted you safe.”

Sophia touched it.

“Daddy safe too.”

Dante closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The investigation accelerated.

With Mirror, authorities could prove Mercer had falsified evidence.

Julian’s financial crimes were documented.

Rebecca’s cooperation helped reconstruct the night.

But Mara remained missing.

And the central question remained.

Who caused Elena’s death?

The audio did not capture the final minutes.

Sophia had seen them.

Nobody wanted to force her to relive it.

Then Sophia asked for paper.

She drew voluntarily.

A staircase.

Elena.

Mara.

A broken glass.

A small child behind a door.

Mara held something.

Not a weapon.

A syringe.

Clara’s heart pounded.

“Elena’s medication.”

Dante remembered the nurse.

Mara had controlled Elena’s pain medication after her accident.

Marco searched the medical records.

Elena had traces of a sedative in her blood.

The original report dismissed it as prescribed medication.

It wasn’t.

Mercer had buried the toxicology discrepancy.

Elena had been drugged.

The confrontation turned physical when Elena realized it.

She fell down the stairs.

The death had been staged as part of the home invasion.

Dante read the reconstructed report.

He did not speak for a long time.

Mara had not necessarily entered intending to kill Elena.

But she had drugged her.

Threatened her.

And caused the confrontation that ended in her death.

Then she and Mercer covered it up.

Sophia remembered the fall.

That was why she stopped speaking.

Clara sat beside her that night.

“You know something?”

Sophia looked up.

“You never have to tell the story again unless you want to.”

Sophia leaned against her.

“Clara?”

“Yes?”

“Stay?”

One word.

But it carried enormous weight.

Clara looked toward Dante.

He was standing in the doorway.

“I can stay tonight.”

Sophia shook her head.

“Stay.”

Clara understood.

Not tonight.

Stay.

In her life.

Clara’s eyes filled.

“I’ll stay as long as you want me around.”

Dante looked away, giving her privacy.

But she saw his expression.

He wanted the same thing.

The next morning, Clara’s landlord called.

Her apartment had been broken into.

Nothing valuable was taken.

Only one object.

A photograph of Clara and her late mother.

On the kitchen wall, someone had written:

YOU TOOK ELENA’S PLACE.

Clara immediately knew.

Mara.

Dante wanted Clara moved permanently into the Vancini residence.

Clara resisted.

“I’m not becoming a prisoner.”

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“So protect me without controlling me.”

Dante stared.

Nobody spoke to him that way.

Clara crossed her arms.

“I have a job.”

“You can quit.”

“I don’t want your money.”

“I didn’t offer money.”

“You were about to.”

He paused.

“I was.”

She almost laughed.

They compromised.

Clara stayed temporarily in the guest wing.

She kept working.

Dante increased security without turning her life into confinement.

Sophia continued improving.

One word became sentences.

She asked for pancakes.

She complained about bedtime.

She laughed when Dante burned toast.

Each ordinary sound felt miraculous.

Dante began changing too.

He sold businesses tied to the dangerous parts of his family empire.

He cooperated with investigators.

He created a legitimate trust in Elena’s name.

Clara watched him dismantle the world his wife had feared.

Not because Clara asked.

Because Sophia deserved it.

Then Mara contacted Clara directly.

A text.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT ELENA’S LAST RECORDING.

An address followed.

Clara showed Dante immediately.

“I’m going,” she said.

“No.”

“With police nearby.”

“No.”

“Dante.”

“No.”

“She wants me because Sophia trusts me.”

“That’s why you’re not going.”

Clara stared at him.

“If we don’t end this, Sophia keeps looking over her shoulder.”

Dante knew she was right.

He hated it.

A controlled meeting was arranged.

An old church.

Police surrounding the area.

Clara entered wearing a hidden microphone.

Mara stood near the altar.

She looked tired.

Not monstrous.

That disturbed Clara.

“You’re the waitress,” Mara said.

“Clara.”

“Sophia likes you.”

“Yes.”

“Elena would have.”

“You don’t get to speak for her.”

Mara flinched.

She held up a recorder.

“Her last words.”

“Give it to me.”

“I need something first.”

“What?”

“Tell Dante I never meant to kill Elena.”

Clara stared.

“Tell Sophia.”

Mara’s face broke.

“I can’t.”

“Then don’t ask me.”

Mara began crying.

She admitted it.

Mercer had convinced her that Dante would destroy their family if Elena exposed the financial network.

Mara sedated Elena.

She intended to steal the drive.

Elena fought her.

Mara grabbed her.

Elena fell.

Julian panicked.

Mercer took control.

Everything afterward became a lie.

“Why come back now?” Clara asked.

“Because Mercer was going to blame me for everything.”

“You were responsible for plenty.”

“Yes.”

Mara held out the recorder.

Clara approached.

Mara suddenly looked past her.

Fear flooded her face.

“No.”

Clara turned.

A side door opened.

Detective Mercer stepped into the church.

May you like

He was supposed to be in federal custody.

And he was holding Clara’s stolen photograph.
