Chapter 5 - The Secret Elena Buried

Dante did not go home alone.

He only made it look that way.

Clara wanted to come.

He refused.

“Sophia trusts me.”

“That is exactly why you’re staying away.”

“She may need me.”

“And I need her alive.”

Clara stared at him.

Dante softened.

“I can’t lose both of you.”

The words surprised them equally.

There was no time to examine them.

Dante left.

Clara stayed with Marco and the guards.

But she kept thinking about the initial.

M.

Marco.

Margaret.

Mercer.

Three people connected to the case.

Three possible names.

“What were you going to tell Dante?” Clara asked.

Marco sat heavily on a storage box.

“M wasn’t a person.”

Clara stared.

“What?”

“Elena used letters for projects.”

He searched until he found an old ledger.

“M stood for Mirror.”

“What was Mirror?”

“A backup system.”

“For what?”

“Everything.”

Elena had created a digital mirror of financial records, security footage, and private communications.

If they found it, they might have proof.

“Where?”

Marco shook his head.

“She never told me.”

Clara thought about Sophia.

About drawings.

Chocolate.

Objects.

Elena had hidden evidence where her daughter could remember it without understanding it.

A music box.

A closet.

Maybe Mirror was another object.

Clara called Dante.

No answer.

Meanwhile, Dante entered his house.

The lights were on.

The foyer was empty.

“Julian.”

His voice carried.

“Upstairs.”

Dante followed.

Sophia sat in the library.

Margaret was beside her.

Neither appeared injured.

Julian stood near the fireplace.

No weapon visible.

Dante looked at Sophia.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

“Come to me.”

Julian didn’t stop her.

Sophia ran to Dante.

He lifted her.

Only then did he look at Julian.

“What do you want?”

“For you to listen.”

“You threatened my daughter.”

“No.”

Julian pointed at Margaret.

“She called me.”

Dante looked at her.

Margaret nodded.

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Because Julian told me something you needed to hear.”

Dante’s face hardened.

Julian said, “Mercer killed Elena.”

“You said you weren’t there.”

“I lied.”

Sophia buried her face against Dante.

Julian continued.

“I was stealing from you. Elena found out. Rebecca agreed to help me recover the evidence. Mercer was supposed to scare Elena into silence.”

Dante’s voice was icy.

“You brought him into my house.”

“Yes.”

“And my wife died.”

“Yes.”

“Why should I not kill you where you stand?”

“Because I can prove who did it.”

Julian produced a tiny memory card.

“I kept insurance.”

Dante stared.

“Three years?”

“I knew Mercer would eventually turn on me.”

“You watched me bury Elena.”

Julian lowered his eyes.

“I was a coward.”

“You watched Sophia stop speaking.”

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

Julian’s composure finally cracked.

“I didn’t know Mercer would kill her.”

Sophia lifted her head.

“No.”

Everyone froze.

She pointed at Julian.

“No.”

Dante looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

Sophia struggled.

“Not... kill.”

Julian stared.

Sophia pointed toward the fireplace.

“Lady.”

Margaret whispered, “Rebecca?”

Sophia shook her head.

Another woman.

Dante’s blood ran cold.

There had been someone else.

Julian looked genuinely confused.

“What lady?”

Sophia touched her own hair.

Then made a cutting motion near her shoulders.

Short hair.

Margaret gasped.

“Elena’s nurse.”

Dante turned.

“What nurse?”

“Elena had a private nurse after the car accident.”

“When?”

“Months before she died.”

Dante remembered.

Rachel Moore.

She had cared for Elena during physical therapy.

She knew the house.

She knew Sophia.

And she disappeared shortly after Elena’s death.

Dante called Marco.

This time Clara answered.

“Find Rachel Moore.”

Clara heard the urgency.

“Who is she?”

“Maybe M.”

Marco searched.

Rachel Moore wasn’t her real name.

The records had been falsified.

Her photograph matched someone else.

A woman named Mara Mercer.

Detective Mercer’s sister.

Clara’s stomach dropped.

She told Dante.

Silence.

Then:

“Mercer had family inside my house.”

Everything changed.

Julian had betrayed Dante.

Rebecca had helped him.

Mercer had corrupted the investigation.

But Mara had access to Elena.

Sophia had trusted her.

Which explained Elena’s warning.

Someone Sophia loved.

Dante looked at his daughter.

“Did Mara hurt Mommy?”

Sophia began crying.

Margaret held her.

“No more questions.”

Dante stopped.

Julian handed over the memory card.

“There’s audio.”

They played it.

Elena’s voice.

Julian arguing.

Rebecca crying.

Mercer threatening.

Then another voice.

Female.

Calm.

“Elena, give me the drive.”

Elena answered:

“Mara, get away from my daughter.”

A crash.

Sophia screaming.

Then the recording ended.

Dante sat down.

Julian whispered, “I never knew she was there.”

Dante looked at him.

“You created the door.”

Julian said nothing.

“Mercer walked through it.”

Still nothing.

“And Mara followed.”

Julian lowered his head.

Dante could hate him without pretending Julian had personally committed every crime.

That distinction mattered.

Not for forgiveness.

For truth.

Police took Julian into custody that afternoon after he surrendered.

He agreed to testify against Mercer.

Rebecca agreed too.

But Mara Mercer was missing.

Clara returned to the Vancini house.

Sophia ran to her.

The child threw both arms around Clara.

Dante watched.

This time there was no hurt in his expression.

Only gratitude.

Clara knelt.

“I missed you too.”

Sophia whispered, “Heart.”

Clara smiled through tears.

“You want another chocolate heart?”

Sophia nodded.

Dante laughed softly.

It might have been the first real laugh in that house for years.

Later, Clara found him in the kitchen attempting to draw a chocolate heart himself.

It looked terrible.

“That’s a potato,” Clara said.

Dante frowned.

“It’s a heart.”

“It has corners.”

“I’m not a pastry chef.”

“You’re barely qualified to hold the bottle.”

He looked at her.

She suddenly remembered she was teasing Dante Vancini.

Then he smiled.

“Show me.”

Clara guided his hand.

Sophia watched from the counter.

For ten quiet minutes, they almost looked like an ordinary family.

Then Sophia saw something through the kitchen window.

Her smile vanished.

Clara noticed.

“What?”

Sophia pointed outside.

A woman stood beyond the garden gate.

Short dark hair.

Gray coat.

Sophia whispered:

“Mara.”

Dante turned.

The woman lifted one hand.

May you like

She was holding Elena’s missing backup drive.

Then every light in the house went out.
