Chapter 22 - The Morning Sun

The morning sun over Central Park was brilliant, casting long, golden shafts of light through the canopy of crimson and gold oak trees. The air was crisp, carrying that unmistakable autumn scent of woodsmoke, damp earth, and roasted chestnuts from a vendor near the path.

Antonio pushed a red stroller along the paved walkway, his heavy wool coat buttoned to the chin. Sitting inside was Mia, clutching her stuffed bear Biscuit in one hand and wearing a pink knit cap that Elena had stayed up half the night finishing.

"Look, Mister! A squirrel!" Mia chirped, pointing excitedly toward a fat gray squirrel darting across the grass.

"That's a very busy squirrel," Antonio agreed, stopping the stroller and kneeling down on one knee to adjust her scarf. "He’s gathering nuts for the winter, just like we did."

Elena walked beside them, her hand resting lightly on the handle of the stroller, her eyes bright and clear in the morning light. She looked down at Antonio, watching how naturally he moved now—no stiffness, no shadows, no lingering ghost of the hospital bed.

"You know the mayor’s office called the house this morning," Elena said with a soft, teasing smile. "They want to name you 'Man of the Year' for your philanthropic donations to the downtown pediatric hospital."

Antonio groaned gently, standing up and dusting off his knees. "Tell them the Moretti family is retired from public service. We only treat patients under three feet tall now."

"A very exclusive practice," Elena laughed, looping her arm through his as they walked slowly along the tree-lined path.

Behind them, the Manhattan skyline rose toward the clouds—a towering monument of steel, glass, and old secrets. But as Antonio looked down at the little girl pointing at the autumn leaves and felt Elena’s shoulder pressed against his own, he knew the past was finally where it belonged: buried deep beneath the dirt, feeding something entirely new, warm, and vibrantly alive.
