Chapter 16 - The Dawn of the Moretti Estate

The sun broke over the East River with the blinding, brutal intensity of a magnesium flare, burning away the last remnants of the autumn fog until the entire skyline of Manhattan looked like it had been dipped in liquid gold.

Inside the nursery on the third floor, Elena was sitting in the rocking chair, her fingers resting lightly on the armrests while Mia slept soundly against her shoulder, one small hand clutching the ear of the stuffed bear Biscuit.

Antonio stood by the window, his hands in his pockets, watching the tugboats churn the dark waters beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. The ledger on his desk was closed. The keys to the northern docks were in the safe. The men from Chicago were currently sitting in the back of a refrigerated freight truck heading south toward the border, wondering how their lives had unraveled so completely between dinner and midnight.

The heavy oak door opened an inch. Damen poked his head in, his face expressionless.

"The car is downstairs," Damen said quietly. "The meeting with the shipping commissioners is at nine."

"Cancel it," Antonio said without turning around.

Damen paused, his eyebrows lifting slightly. "Cancel? The commissioners have been waiting three days—"

"Let them wait another three," Antonio interrupted, his voice dropping into that warm, grounded register that belonged only to this room. "Tell them the Moretti family is closed on Tuesdays. We have to take a little doctor to the park to see the ducks."

Damen looked from Antonio’s broad shoulders to the sleeping child on Elena’s lap. A slow, genuine smile—the first one that didn't look like a threat—touched the corner of his mouth.

"I'll tell them you're busy with more important negotiations," Damen said.

"You do that," Antonio replied.

As the door clicked shut, Antonio walked over to the rocking chair, kneeling down on one knee just as he had the morning before. Elena looked down at him, her eyes shining with that quiet, profound relief that no amount of gold or blood could ever buy.

"You're missing business," she whispered playfully.

May you like

"Business can wait," Antonio said softly, reaching out to stroke a stray curl from Mia’s forehead as the little girl murmured something unintelligible in her sleep. "The world outside is full of noise, Elena. But in here... the heart is finally cured."

The morning sun washed over them all—gold and warm and absolute—turning the shadows of the old estate into nothing more than memories drifting out with the tide.
