Chapter 2 - THE REASON FOR THE SILENCE

At 3:00 AM, the ICU floor was sealed off.
Victor had posted four guards at the elevators and two outside Room 1012. The Han organization had effectively turned the tenth floor of Lakeshore Metropolitan into a fortress.
Nia was at the nurses' station, reviewing Daniel’s blood gas levels on a computer screen, when a tall shadow fell over her desk.
She didn't look up. "Visiting hours ended four hours ago, Daniel. And you shouldn't be out of bed."
Daniel was standing in the doorway of the nurses' station. He had pulled off his telemetry leads and replaced his hospital gown with a black charcoal sweater and dark trousers provided by his security team. He looked pale, but the commanding aura that made powerful men shrink in his presence was fully intact.
"I had to see you," Daniel said quietly.
"I’m working," Nia replied, her eyes fixed on the screen. "Your vitals look good. The antibody treatment bound the toxin. You should make a full recovery in three days. Now go back to your room."
Daniel stepped closer. The scent of rain, leather, and cedar—his signature scent—drifted over her, instantly dragging up memories of late-night dinners, quiet laughter, and promises made in the dark.
"Four years ago," Daniel began, his voice dropping into a raspy, intense lower register, "I didn't leave you at that altar because I didn't love you."
Nia stopped typing. She slowly turned her chair around to look at him. Her face was an unreadable mask, honed by four years of emergency medicine, but her brown eyes burned with a fierce, controlled anger.
"Daniel, don't," she warned.
"I have to," he insisted, taking another step until he was standing directly over her. "Four years ago, my father died three days before our wedding. What the public didn't know was that he was executed by the Vance family syndicate. Julian Vance gave me an ultimatum: step aside and let them take our shipping lanes, or watch them eliminate everyone I cared about."
Nia stared at him, her heart thumping against her ribs. "So you just ghosted me? You let me stand in front of two hundred people in a white dress waiting for a man who didn't even have the decency to send a text?"
"If I had sent a text, if I had called you, Julian Vance’s hitters would have put a bullet in your head before sunrise!" Daniel snapped, his dark eyes flashing with raw, uncharacteristic emotion. "They knew about you, Nia. They knew you were my weakness. The only way to keep you alive was to make the world believe I didn't give a damn about you."
Nia let out a bitter, quiet laugh. "So you played the villain to play the savior? Is that the story you tell yourself at night to sleep?"
"It’s the truth!" Daniel leaned down, his hands gripping the arms of her chair, trapping her in his space. "I broke my own heart so yours would keep beating. I agreed to a political marriage with Evelyn Vance to buy four years of peace, to rebuild my family's power until I could destroy the Vances from the inside."
Nia looked into his dark, tortured eyes. For four years, she had hated him. She had built a life around the idea that he was a selfish mobster who had used her until it was inconvenient.
Hearing the truth didn't erase the pain. It just made the tragedy sharper.
"It doesn't matter anymore, Daniel," Nia whispered softly. "You're getting married to Evelyn today. Or tomorrow, whenever you leave this hospital. Your life is over there. Mine is here."
"I didn't drink that wine by accident tonight, Nia," Daniel said, his face inches from hers. "Evelyn didn't poison me. Her father did. Because Julian found out that yesterday morning, before I walked down that aisle, I signed over eighty percent of Han Holdings to a private trust. I was never going to marry her."
Nia frowned. "Why?"

Daniel reached out, his long fingers hesitating before gently touching the side of her face. The heat of his palm sent a shiver straight down her spine.
"Because the four years were up," Daniel whispered. "I brought down the Vance network yesterday. I freed myself. And I was coming back for you."
