Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Estate

By midnight, the storm outside had intensified, howling through the stone arches of the Moretti estate. Inside, the mansion was under absolute lockdown. Dante's men were sweeping every room, replacing lock codes, and detaining four security guards who had been hired on Victoria’s recommendation.
In the private study, Adrian sat behind his heavy oak desk, sipping a glass of neat bourbon—poured from a fresh, sealed bottle he had unsealed himself.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
"Enter," Adrian said.
Grace stepped into the study. She had changed out of her apron and wore a simple grey sweater. Her face was pale, lined with exhaustion and anxiety. She stood near the door, her hands folded tightly in front of her.
"Sit down, Grace," Adrian ordered gently, pointing to the leather chair across from his desk.
Grace hesitated before sitting on the very edge of the cushion. "Mr. Moretti... I wanted to assure you that I had no knowledge of Miss Victoria's actions. I have served your family faithfully for four years—"
"I know you had no part in it, Grace," Adrian interrupted smoothly. "If you were involved, I wouldn't be speaking to you in this room. You would be in the basement with Victoria."
Grace swallowed hard, bowing her head. "Thank you, sir."
"How is Lily?" Adrian asked.
"She’s asleep," Grace replied, a soft smile touching her tired eyes. "She was worried she made you angry because she touched your glass. She doesn't fully understand what happened today."
"She saved my life," Adrian said flatly, setting his glass down. "Neither of you will ever be in danger in this house again. But things are going to become very unstable over the next few days. Victoria’s father, Senator Sterling, will realize she has vanished by tomorrow morning. He will deploy state police and private mercenaries to locate her."
"What are we going to do?" Grace asked quietly.
"We strike first," Adrian said, his tone turning to ice. "Dante has already traced the encrypted phone messages. Senator Sterling didn't just plan my assassination—he bought off three of my regional captains in the South District. They are planning a coordinated raid on my central warehouse at dawn tomorrow."
Adrian stood up and walked to the window, watching the rain lash against the glass.
"I am moving you and Lily to the safehouse in the northern hills tonight," Adrian continued. "It is fully armored and guarded by my most loyal men. You will remain there until I settle this war."
"Mr. Moretti," Grace said, standing up. "Please... be careful. Lily would be heartbroken if anything happened to you."
Adrian turned to look at her. For four years, he had viewed Grace merely as a competent, quiet employee who kept his house running smoothly. But looking at her now, seeing the genuine worry in her eyes, he realized how much warmth she and her daughter had brought into his cold, solitary existence.
"I will be fine, Grace," Adrian said gently. "Prepare your bags. You leave in twenty minutes."
An hour later, a heavy black SUV pulled out of the estate’s underground garage, carrying Grace and Lily under heavy escort toward the northern mountains.
As soon as the tail lights disappeared into the rain, Adrian walked into the basement holding cells beneath the wine cellar.
Victoria Sterling sat on a metal chair, her hands zip-tied behind her back, her hair disheveled, but her posture still arrogant. Dante stood near the door, holding a thick dossier.
"Your father's men are already moving on the South District warehouse," Adrian said, stepping into the dim light of the cell. "He thinks I'm dead, doesn't he? He thinks you succeeded."
Victoria sneered, turning her face away. "It doesn't matter what you know, Adrian. The Sterling family controls the judicial committee, the port authority, and the state police. You are just a criminal. By noon tomorrow, your empire will be dismantled."
"You forgot one thing, Victoria," Adrian said, pulling a photo from Dante's dossier and tossing it into her lap.
Victoria looked down at the photo. Her eyes widened in instant panic.
It was a photograph of her brother, Julian Sterling, stepping out of an offshore banking office in Grand Cayman, holding a briefcase filled with unregistered bearer bonds—bonds stolen directly from the state pension fund to finance the Sterling family's private debts.
"Where did you get that?!" Victoria gasped, her voice trembling for the first time.
"Your family thought you were using me to gain control of my shipping lines," Adrian whispered, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. "You didn't realize I have been investigating your father's fraudulent empire for two years. I allowed you into my house because I wanted to see how deep your network ran. The poison glass was merely the desperate act of a family on the verge of bankruptcy."
Victoria’s breath hitched in her throat. She realized, with sudden, terrifying clarity, that she had never been the predator in this house. She had been the bait.
"Dante," Adrian commanded, turning toward the door. "Leak the Cayman files to the federal prosecutors at 5:00 AM. By the time Senator Sterling's men arrive at my warehouse, the FBI will be raiding his estate."
"Right away, Boss," Dante replied.
May you like
"And what about her?" Dante asked, gesturing toward Victoria.
"Leave her here," Adrian ordered coldly. "Let her watch her family's empire burn from a television screen in a cellar."
