Chapter 6 - The Return of the Ring

Three months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the lush green hills overlooking the Carver estate. The shattered glass of the marble foyer had long since been replaced with soaring, custom-crafted crystal panes that let in streams of warm, golden sunlight.

The Carver empire had undergone a quiet, violent revolution. Marco Moretti’s syndicate had been completely dismantled, their illegal docks seized, and their assets frozen by federal authorities following a massive, anonymous paper trail delivered directly to the Justice Department—a gift carefully packaged and sent by Claire Bennett Carver herself.

Julian and Evelyn were gone, serving lengthy sentences in federal prison for grand larceny, racketeering, and attempted murder, their names erased from the family trust forever.

Inside the quiet, sunlit master bedroom of the main estate, Claire stood before a full-length mirror, wearing an elegant, form-fitting emerald green dress that accentuated every soft curve of her body.

Behind her, the door opened quietly.

Dominic stepped into the room. He was wearing a dark, tailored suit without a tie, his top shirt button undone, looking relaxed, powerful, and undeniably handsome. The dark shadows that had haunted his eyes for years were gone, replaced by a quiet, deep peace.

He walked up behind her, his large hands settling gently onto her hips, pulling her back against his chest. Claire leaned back into his warm embrace, letting her head rest against his shoulder as they both looked at their reflection in the mirror.

"You look breathtaking, my love," Dominic murmured, kissing the soft spot beneath her ear, making her shiver pleasantly.

"We’re going to be late for the foundation reopening ceremony, Dominic," Claire reminded him with a soft smile, turning in his arms to face him, resting her hands against his chest. "The board is waiting to announce the new five-million-dollar endowment."

"Let them wait," Dominic said softly. "I am the chairman. And more importantly, my wife is the Chief Financial Officer."

Claire chuckled, tapping his chest gently. "Don't abuse your power, boss."

Dominic’s expression softened into something intensely deep and serious. He reached into his suit jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jewelry box. He opened it, revealing the platinum wedding ring—the same ring she had pressed into his hand on that bloody, terrible night three months ago.

Claire looked down at the ring, her breath catching slightly.

"Every dollar you returned to me that night," Dominic said, his voice low and full of profound emotion, "was a reminder of how worthless my money was without your trust. You came into my life with nothing but your brilliant mind and your unshakeable dignity. You didn't need my fortune, Claire. I needed your light."

He took her left hand in his, his fingers gentle, almost reverent.

"I spent my whole life building walls because I thought everyone was a gold digger or an assassin," Dominic continued, looking straight into her eyes. "You showed me that real loyalty can't be bought. It has to be earned. Every single day."

He looked down at her ring finger. "Will you let me spend the rest of my life earning you, Claire?"

Tears gathered in Claire’s eyes—not tears of pain or humiliation like before, but tears of absolute, overflowing happiness. She looked at the powerful man who had dropped to his knees before her in every way that mattered.

"Yes, Dominic," Claire whispered, her voice clear and full of love. "Put it back on."

Dominic slid the platinum band smoothly onto her finger. The fit was perfect, as if it had never left.

He lifted her hand to his lips, pressing a long, warm kiss to the ring, before pulling her into his arms and lifting her slightly off her feet. Claire wrapped her arms around his neck, sinking into a deep, passionate kiss that sealed every broken piece of their past and promised a brilliant, unbreakable future.

When they finally broke apart, both slightly breathless, Dominic looked down at her with a dangerous, playful smirk.

"By the way, CFO Carver," Dominic murmured, his hands resting possessively on her hips. "I noticed an unauthorized transfer of fifty thousand dollars out of my personal account this morning."

Claire raised an eyebrow, a mischievous smile touching her lips. "Oh? Did you?"

"Yes," Dominic chuckled, bending down to kiss her forehead. "Care to explain where my money went?"

"I bought a brand new state-of-the-art audit software system for the foundation," Claire said with supreme confidence, running her fingers through his dark hair. "And a pair of very expensive shoes to wear to your ceremony."

May you like

Dominic laughed—a rich, booming sound that filled the entire room with warmth. He pulled her close, kissing her deeply once more.

"Best money I ever spent," he whispered against her lips.
