Chapter 5 - The War at the Gates

Dominic didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger, dropping the guard holding the spotlight on the warehouse roof in a single, fluid motion before the sound of the gunshot even finished echoing.

"Marcus! Attack now!" Dominic roared into his comms unit, turning on his heel and sprinting back toward his armored SUV as gunfire erupted across the entire pier.

Muzzle flashes illuminated the rainy dark like strobe lights. Bullets pinged off the steel shipping containers surrounding him, but Dominic paid them no mind. His entire world was burning with a single, terrifying thought: Claire.

He slammed into the driver's seat of his reinforced vehicle, turned the ignition, and smashed through the port’s security gate, the engine screaming as he accelerated toward the highway at terrifying speed.

He dialed the estate’s primary security line on his dashboard console.

Static chirped over the speaker. Then, Marcus’s second-in-command, voice breathless and punctuated by the sound of heavy automatic gunfire in the background, answered: "Boss! We’re under heavy attack at the main gate! A force of at least twelve men rammed the perimeter fence!"

"Where is Claire?!" Dominic shouted, pressing the gas pedal flat against the floorboard, the SUV tearing through the highway at over one hundred miles per hour.

"She’s secured in the north wing panic room! But they brought breachers, boss! They’re using thermal explosives on the interior doors!"

"Hold them off! I am five minutes away!" Dominic snarled, his eyes bloodshot with rage. "If a single hair on her head is harmed, I will burn this entire city to the ground!"

Back at the Carver estate, the grand marble halls were turned into a war zone. Smoke filled the corridors as flashbangs exploded on the ground floor.

Inside the north wing guest suite, Claire was not hiding in the panic room.

She had used the security keycard Dominic had left on the desk to access the mansion’s central surveillance terminal inside the master study. Sitting before six glowing monitors, her face illuminated by the blue light, Claire was actively rerouting the estate’s automated security protocols.

"Come on... push through..." Claire muttered, her fingers flying across the keyboard with incredible speed.

She watched the live security feed on monitor three. Four heavily armed men in dark tactical gear were advancing up the grand staircase toward the master quarters, holding heavy shotguns. The estate’s remaining house guards were pinned down in the east hallway.

Claire tapped into the house’s smart-grid infrastructure—a state-of-the-art defense system Dominic had installed two years ago that required administrative clearance to activate fully. She bypassed the primary security locks, override codes flashing green across her screen.

SYSTEM OVERRIDE APPROVED.

Claire grabbed the desk microphone connected to the house intercom.

"Attention uninvited guests," Claire’s voice echoed suddenly through every speaker in the entire mansion, calm, clear, and dripping with icy disdain. "You are currently trespassing on private property. Fire suppression system activated."

Before the attackers on the staircase could react, heavy industrial fire-retardant foam burst from high-pressure ceiling vents, blinding them instantly and making the marble steps as slick as ice. The men slipped, tumbling backward down the massive staircase in a chaotic heap of heavy gear and weapons.

At that exact moment, the front iron gates of the estate were shattered as Dominic’s heavy armored SUV burst through the smoke, tearing across the front lawn and coming to a violent halt right in front of the shattered foyer entrance.

Dominic exploded out of the driver's door, weapon raised, moving like a demon unleashed.

He breached the foyer just as two surviving attackers were trying to wipe the blinding foam from their eyes at the base of the stairs. Dominic fired twice with lethal, terrifying precision, dropping them both before they could raise their barrels.

He moved through the smoke-filled halls like an unstoppable force of nature, clearing room after room with ruthless efficiency alongside his returning perimeter team. Within four minutes, the gunfire inside the mansion ceased completely, replaced by the heavy silence of smoke, dripping foam, and defeated enemies.

Dominic didn't pause to check the dead or wounded. He threw open the door to the master study, his weapon raised, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Claire was standing behind the central desk. Her hair was slightly disheveled, a smudge of charcoal on her left cheek, but her posture was completely straight, her eyes dark and unwavering as she looked at him across the room.

Dominic dropped his weapon onto the rug. He covered the distance between them in two massive strides, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her forcefully against his chest, burying his face in her neck with a deep, shuddering gasp.

"Claire..." he breathed, his whole body shaking with the immense release of fear and adrenaline. "God... Claire... you're safe."

Claire stood frozen for a second, overwhelmed by the sheer force of his embrace. She felt the violent tremor in his strong hands, heard the ragged, terrified edge in his breathing, and realized with absolute certainty that this feared crime lord had just run through a war zone not for his empire, not for his pride, but because he was terrified of losing her.

Slowly, her arms lifted, wrapping around his broad shoulders, pulling him closer.

"I told you I was safe, Dominic," Claire whispered softly into his shoulder, her voice finally cracking with emotion. "I hacked your house security system. I made them slip on fire foam."

Dominic pulled back slightly, looking down at her face, a wild mixture of utter disbelief, fierce relief, and intense adoration in his eyes. He let out a breathless, breathless laugh.

"You... you used the fire suppression system?"

"It was efficient," Claire said, a small, genuine smile breaking through her tear-streaked face. "And very satisfying to watch on monitor three."

Dominic stared at her, his dark eyes brimming with an emotion so deep, so profound, that it completely stripped away the cold, dangerous gangster he had been all his life. He raised his hands, gently framing her face, his thumbs wiping away the charcoal mark on her soft cheek.

"I am the stupidest man alive," Dominic said softly, his voice trembling. "I had a queen standing beside me, and I looked at her like a thief."

Claire looked up into his eyes, seeing no paranoia, no suspicion, no crime boss—only the man who loved her so fiercely he would burn the world to keep her safe.

"You really are stupid, Dominic Carver," Claire whispered, her voice warm. "So what are you going to do about it?"
