Chapter 3 - The Gala of Wolves

The Grand Regency Ballroom in downtown Chicago was a monument to old-world mafia opulence. Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings, casting warm, golden light over hundreds of tuxedo-clad men and women dripping in diamonds.

To the outside world, this was the annual Winter Charity Gala for the Valente Relief Foundation. To the underworld, it was the annual gathering of the five families, where alliances were cemented and debts were collected.

Matteo Valente stood near the mezzanine railing overlooking the ballroom, a crystal tumbler of straight bourbon in his hand.

He looked immaculate in a bespoke black tuxedo, but the dark circles under his eyes betrayed the fact that he hadn't slept in thirty-six hours. He had spent the last two days trying to find Clare, but she had ghosted his entire intelligence network. She had used no credit cards, no tracked phones, no Valente resources.

She had truly erased him from her life.

His hand reached into his pocket, his fingers wrapping around the cold platinum wedding ring he had carried with him every second since she left.

“I would rather walk out of your world with nothing than spend another night married to a man who thinks my love came with an invoice.”

Her parting words echoed endlessly in his mind, cutting deeper than any physical wound. He had spent his life believing that money and power were the only things that kept a person safe, the only things that mattered. But Clare had thrown four million dollars back into his face like it was worthless trash, proving in a single heartbeat that her heart was the one thing he couldn't buy—and the one thing he had carelessly destroyed.

"You look like a man who lost his kingdom, cousin," a slick voice sneered from behind him.

Matteo didn't turn around. He took a sip of his bourbon. "Julian."

Julian Valente stepped up to the railing, smoothing the lapels of his midnight-blue velvet tuxedo. He held a glass of champagne, a confident, victorious smirk playing on his lips.

"I heard the house on Birchwood Lane is getting new marble installed in the foyer," Julian said casually. "Nasty business, that attack. It’s a pity about Clare, though. A real shame she ran off after her little scam was exposed."

Matteo’s jaw tightened, his knuckles turning white around his glass. "Watch your mouth, Julian."

"I'm just speaking the truth, Matteo," Julian scoffed smoothly. "You were soft on her because she was... different. You let a middle-class accountant with soft curves and no family pedigree manipulate you. A real Valente wife would have stood by you, not cleaned out your accounts and bolted at the first sign of trouble."

Matteo turned slowly, his eyes locking onto his cousin with a deadly, suffocating intensity that made Julian’s smirk flicker.

"Clare didn't take a single cent," Matteo said, his voice dangerously low. "She left everything. Every dime. Every piece of jewelry. She walked away naked to the world because my suspicion insulted her honor."

Julian chuckled, though it sounded forced now. "Honor? She’s an accountant, Matteo. She’s probably halfway to South America with the six million from the foundation—"

"No," a clear, ringing voice interrupted from the top of the grand staircase. "She’s right here."

The entire ballroom seemed to go dead silent.

At the top of the marble staircase stood Clare Donovan.

She was stunning. She wore a deep emerald-green silk gown that hugged her lush, soft curves without apology, cascading down her hips like liquid velvet. Her dark brown curls had been pinned up in an elegant, regal updo, letting a few soft tendrils frame her striking, porcelain face. She wore no jewelry—no diamonds, no pearls, no ring.

She needed none. She commanded the entire room by her sheer presence alone.

Matteo’s breath caught in his throat. His glass nearly slipped from his hand. "Clare..." he whispered, his heart slamming against his ribs.

Beside him, Julian’s face paled dramatically. "What the hell is she doing here?"

Clare didn't look at the mob bosses staring at her from the floor. She didn't look at the security guards reaching for their holsters. She walked down the grand staircase with absolute, unshakeable grace, her eyes locked directly on Julian Valente.

Behind her, entering from the side doors of the ballroom, were six federal agents accompanied by Dominic and four of Matteo’s most loyal lieutenants.

"Julian Valente," Clare announced, her voice carrying across the silent hall through the microphone held by the gala's master of ceremonies. "You are under the impression that you executed a flawless embezzlement."

Julian took a step back, his eyes darting toward the exits. "She's insane! Security, get this woman out of here!"

"Don't move, security," Matteo growled, his voice booming over the balcony. He stepped down the stairs, moving to stand in front of Clare, shielding her while turning his glare toward Julian.

Clare pulled a thick, leather-bound binder from the hands of the lead federal agent beside her and tossed it onto a high cocktail table right in front of the five family bosses.

"Inside that binder," Clare said calmly, "is the complete forensic reconstruction of the Valente Relief Foundation's accounts. The six million dollars was not transferred to the Caymans. It was routed through three shell companies owned by Julian Valente to purchase illegal military-grade hardware currently stored in a warehouse on Dock 14."

Gasp of shock rippled through the gathered mob leaders.

"She’s lying!" Julian shouted, sweat breaking out on his forehead. "She forged those documents!"

"I don't forge documents, Julian," Clare said, stepping closer to him, her eyes fierce and brilliant. "I expose the people who do. You used a hardware cloner when you entered Matteo’s study last Tuesday at 2:14 AM. What you didn't know is that my personal token records ambient biometric data. It recorded your thumbprint on the casing when you picked it up."

Julian’s hand twitched toward his coat pocket—reaching for a concealed weapon.

Before he could even clear the leather, Matteo moved like a striking viper. He grabbed Julian’s wrist, twisting it violently until a compact firearm clattered onto the marble floor. In the same motion, Matteo slammed Julian face-first onto the table, pinning him under a heavy, suffocating grip.

"You tried to frame my wife," Matteo whispered into Julian’s ear, his voice promises of pain and nightmare. "You tried to destroy my marriage."

"Matteo, wait!" Julian choked out, panicked tears springing to his eyes. "It was business! You were getting soft because of her!"

"Dominic," Matteo cold-commanded, not taking his eyes off his cousin. "Hand him over to the federal authorities. And make sure the warehouse on Dock 14 is seized."

As the federal agents snapped handcuffs onto Julian and dragged him away through the stunned crowd, the ballroom erupted into low, urgent murmurs.

Matteo stood alone near the table. He straightened his jacket, turned slowly, and looked at Clare.

She stood five feet away, her chest rising and falling softly, her eyes cool and unreadable.

"You proved your innocence," Matteo said softly, his voice trembling with a raw emotion no one in Chicago had ever heard from him before.

"I didn't do this to prove my innocence to you, Matteo," Clare said quietly, her words cutting through him like glass. "I did it because my name was on those foundation books, and I don't let anyone ruin my work."

She turned to leave once more.

May you like

"Clare, wait!" Matteo called out, taking a swift step toward her.

She stopped at the archway, looking back over her bare shoulder. "Goodbye, Matteo."
