Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail

The rain hit Chicago by midnight, slicking the dark pavement of the West Loop where Clare had rented a modest, one-bedroom apartment under her maiden name three days prior—the moment she had first sensed Matteo’s subtle shift in behavior.
She sat at her small kitchen table, a steaming mug of black coffee sitting untouched beside her laptop. The apartment was drafty and smelled of old paint, a stark contrast to the heated marble floors and priceless artwork of the Valente estate. But for the first time in four months, Clare felt like she could breathe.
She opened a secure cloud drive.
Clare Donovan was not just a forensic accountant; she was a master of systemic financial architecture. When she had agreed to audit the Valente Relief Foundation four months ago, she had built a secondary, dark-trace ledger—a phantom tracking program designed to catch embezzlers before they could wipe their tracks.
When Matteo had accused her earlier that evening, shock had rendered her mute. But shock had now given way to a ruthless, cold intellect.
"You think I'm a gold digger?" she muttered to the empty room, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "Let's see who was actually digging into your gold, Matteo."
Line by line, code by code, Clare began pulling back the encryption layers on the unauthorized six-million-dollar transfers.
The digital signature used to execute the wire transfers had indeed been hers—or rather, a bit-for-bit clone of her cryptographic key. But a cryptographic key couldn't be cloned remotely without physical access to her hardware token.
And her hardware token had remained inside her locked briefcase in the private study at the Valente mansion.
Clare paused, her eyes narrowing at the timestamps.
Transfer 1: Tuesday, 02:14 AM - $2,000,000 Transfer 2: Wednesday, 03:30 AM - $2,000,000 Transfer 3: Thursday, 01:45 AM - $2,000,000
Tuesday at 2:00 AM.
Clare remembered that night vividly. Matteo had been out resolving a territorial dispute on the South Side. She had been asleep in their master suite. But around 2:00 AM, she had woken up thirsty and gone down to the kitchen.
On her way back up, she had seen a light flickering under the door of Matteo’s private study.
She had thought it was Matteo returning early. She had pushed the door open slightly and found Julian Valente—Matteo’s younger, smooth-talking cousin and the chief operating officer of the family's legitimate logistics arm.
Julian had smiled his usual charming, slick smile, holding a glass of scotch. “Just dropping off the revised shipping manifests for Matteo, Clare. Didn't mean to wake you.”
Clare’s fingers froze over her keyboard.
Julian.
Julian had been standing right next to her leather briefcase.
A heavy knock rattled the front door of her apartment, shattering the silence.
Clare instantly shut the laptop lid. She picked up a heavy stainless-steel rolling pin from the counter—the only weapon she had—and moved cautiously toward the entry door.
"Who is it?" she called out, her voice tight.
"It's Dominic, Mrs. Valente," came the low, gravelly response through the wood. "Open up. Please. The boss doesn't know I'm here."
Clare hesitated, then peeked through the peephole. Dominic stood in the dimly lit hallway, wet from the rain, wearing a plain leather jacket instead of his usual tactical gear. He was alone.
She unlatched the chain and opened the door two inches. "I told Matteo I don't want his protection."
"I know what you told him," Dominic said, his expression grim. "And I'm not here on his orders. I'm here because I've served the Valente family for twenty years, Mrs. Valente. And I know the difference between a snake and a loyal woman."
Clare studied the old soldier for a long moment before stepping back to let him in.
Dominic entered, his eyes scanning the cramped apartment with a sharp, professional assessment before settling on her. "Matteo is tearing Chicago apart right now. He’s got fifty men hunting down the shooters from tonight. He’s out of his mind."
"He brought it on himself," Clare said coldly, leaning against her counter. "Why are you here, Dominic?"
Dominic pulled a small, encrypted thumb drive from his pocket and laid it on the table. "Because the shooter we killed tonight? He didn't belong to the Moretti family or the Syndicate. I checked his tattoo before the city coroner hauled the body away. He’s on the payroll of a local private security firm owned by Julian Valente."
Clare’s breath hitched. "Julian."
"Julian was the one who presented the audit report to Matteo tonight," Dominic revealed, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "He brought the printed ledger into the boardroom right after you left for lunch. He told Matteo that you were funneling money to an offshore account in the Caymans under your maiden name."
"It's a setup," Clare said, her mind piecing the puzzle together instantly. "Julian embezzled the money using my cloned security key. Then he leaked the audit to Matteo, knowing Matteo’s fatal flaw."
"Paranoia," Dominic agreed solemnly. "Matteo spent his whole life watching people try to take what’s his. Julian knew if he made it look like you were stealing from him, Matteo would react before he investigated. Julian wanted you out of the picture before you found out where the money was really going."
May you like
"Where is it going?" Clare asked.
Dominic leaned in. "Julian isn't just stealing, Mrs. Valente. He’s buying firearms. Heavy automatic weapons. He’s planning a coup within the Valente organization during tomorrow night's gala."
